Yearbook of the Society for 18th Century Studies on South Eastern Europe / Klosteraufhebung in Ungarn unter der Regierung Josephs II.
The emperor’s decree issued on 26 January 1782 abolished the monastic orders of contemplative inclination in Hungary as well as the institution of hermitage. In 1783 the Trinitarians, and in 1786 the Hieronymites, the Camillans, the Paulians and the Order of Paul the Hermit were to suffer the same fate. During the times that followed, no further entire order were abolished. On the basis of written sources the number of the cloisters in Hungary in 1782 can be reckoned to have been 314, out of which 140 monasteries were dissolved by 1790. Consequently the reduction was 44 percents of the cloisters in 1782. The surveys commenced in 1782 and reproduced several times during Joseph II’s reign and aiming at exactly assessing and defining the membership of particularly the Catholic Church, provide ample detailed information on the inhabitants of the cloisters in Hungary. While the imperial reforms launched in 1784 and extending to almost every area of the state were being imposed an ever-growing need and demand on the emptied Church estates became evident, which not only included 140 monasteries institutions, but also a great number of minor estates. One of the most complex topics is the destiny of the monastic libraries and the corresponding collections – numismatic and antiquity collections, rarities etc. – and the question of how they were classified and utilised. In the 140 monasteries closed down between 1782 and 1790 there may have been about 120,000 books. The overall asset inventory taken during the dissolution of a monastery contained also an inventory of the equipment and furnishing of the church and cloister edifice. The future of the inventory items, where they went afterwards, was of a great variety: the item could stay in its original place if the monastic church was turned into a parish church; it could be sold in auction; it could be given to the diocesan bishop to be distributed among the parishes in need; finally due to its value („Pretiosen”), it could be transferred to the depository of the central administration. The main inventory („Hauptinventarium”) that registered the data of the items transferred to the central depository, and presumably consists of several volumes, has not yet emerged from the material of the Hungarian National Archive. But on the basis of the transfer registers, and with the help of the extant surveys, receipts etc. and with the establishment of a computer database, the main inventory standardised in 1788 could be reconstructed to a high degree. I believe that the primary aim of the reduction of the monastic institutions was to provide the new parishes established during the parish regulation with adequate personnel and equipment. All this meant was a re-grouping of part of the Church assets. Undoubtedly, the reorganisation, beside all its advantages, produced losses of both human and material character – painful ones, especially for posterity
In a post-digital society, where digital and analog forms of communication merge, the concept of multilingualism requires redefinition. This paper introduces the term post-digital multilingualism, describing the flexible use of linguistic and media resources in hybrid spaces. It analyzes the challenges and potentials of this new linguistic practice and connects it with existing concepts of multilingualism and mediality. The aim is to establish a theoretical foundation for integrating post-digital multilingualism into education and research while addressing the resulting demands on language education, media competence, and intercultural communication.Version of recor
Psychoanalytic elements in child envy. Melanie Klein and Augustine on original sin Melanie Klein’s emphasis on destructive impulses in children was sceptically interpreted within psychoanalytical discourse as an extension of the Christianconcept of original sin. This study further expands on this understanding and correlates Klein’s theories with Augustine’s teachings on humanity’s concupiscence and original sin. The focus of this exploration are affects in early child development, in particular envy and its fundamental role in the fall of Adam and Eve. Both Augustine and Klein recognise a destructive potential as the conditioof humans without conceding to it as a determining factor. This approach opens up a possible dialogue between theological anthropology and psychoanalysis

Contemporary Southeastern Europe / Renewed geopolitical tensions and security policyimplications for small states in Southeast Europe
The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 and the subsequent war have precipitated profound transformations in defense and security frameworks across Europe and globally. The resurgence of military threats to both national and international security has reinstated the prominence of military dimension of security – an aspect that had been increasingly overshadowed by non-traditional security challenges in the early 21st century. In this context, a critical question emerges: Are we witnessing a renewed trend toward the militarization of security policies among various actors, including states, internationalorganizations, and alliances? This paper explores this question within the specific context ofSoutheast Europe, analyzing strategic security documents and defense-related developments across the region. It begins by briefly engaging with small states theory to elucidate the structural and strategic factors influencing the security policy choices of these countries. Subsequently, the paper examines intra-regional dynamics that shape security trends and interactions in Southeast Europe, highlighting the interplay between domestic and regional factors in the evolution of security strategies
Contemporary Southeastern Europe / Between Red and White or Red, Blue and White? Assessing Delije’s Role as a Russian Proxy on Telegram
This study examines whether Delije, the ultras group supporting Red Star Belgrade, function as a Russian proxy on Telegram within the context of hybrid warfare. While known for their political ties in Serbia, their online role remains underexplored. Although some scholars have identified offline proxy traits among Serbian ultras, this study investigates whether Delije exhibit similar dynamics online. Using qualitative content analysis of Delije’s Telegram channel (September 2022 - January 2025) and a coding framework based on prior research on Russian proxy groups, the analysis finds recurring anti-Western sentiment, pro- Russian messaging, and hostility toward civil society. However, the analysis also identifiesnotable gaps: limited evidence of recruitment, fundraising, or coordinated cross-channelactivity. In response, the study introduces the concept of a ‘semi-proxy group’ to moreaccurately capture the ambiguous positioning of Delije. Rather than functioning as a fullfledgedTelegram-based proxy, Delije retain their primary identity as a fan group, while occasionally contributing to Russia’s influence efforts in Serbia. This study contributes to the broader understanding of how influential non-state actors in the Balkans can function as instruments of foreign influence, particularly in the evolving digital landscape of hybrid warfare
