In media representations, dichotomous gender attributions such as ‘nature vs. culture’, ‘emotionality vs. rationality’ or ‘power vs. powerlessness’ are reproduced in technical contexts on the one hand, but on the other (potentially) also subverted, which offers opportunities for their cultural renegotiation. Against this backdrop, the following article will begin by looking at film history and the projection of gender characteristics onto technology within AI and robot narratives and then systematise these trends in terms of typical narrative patterns. In a second step, the two recent film examples Her (USA, 2013, Spike Jonze) and Ex Machina (GB, 2015, Alex Garland) will be examined in depth. Particular attention will be paid to the question of the extent to which changes in mentalities are emerging in recent AI films compared to film history
In artistic portrayals with artificial humans, it can be observed that machine-humans are poetized, aestheticized and alienated. Cinematic and literary imaginings ascribe qualities of otherness to the technically reproduced human, e.g. by highlighting cultural differences. In addition, they often reflect on the existence of humanoid robots through references to art. This article explores the portrayal of the humanoid robot through art and the significance of its attribution of otherness, using as an example the film I’m Your Man (2021). The film deals with the optimization of humans and their capacity to love, raising the question of whether the ideal lies in a relationship with the stranger within oneself. The ethical questions surrounding the (non-)human posed by the film through a human-machine relationship are explored with reference to Freud’s theories of the unconscious and Julia Kristeva’s Strangers to Ourselves. Intercultural and psychoanalytic theories are drawn upon to examine the image of the (technically reproduced) human, its boundaries and the significance of art in envisioning the human of the future, and are presented for discussion as an interdisciplinary interpretive framework for the humanoid robot

Iberoamericana / Managua - A “Gringorized” City? Urbanization, Consumption, and Shopping Spaces in times of revolution and crises, 1979-1993
This article analyzes urban change and food consumption in revolutionary Managua and during economic transition up to 1993. The Sandinista revolutionaries tried to establish new consumer ideals, ensure equal access to food for all Nicaraguans, and slow down urbanization. However, economic crises, the Contra war, conflicts over agrarian reform, and stagnating food production undermined their political project. This article demonstrates that the supply problems and internal contradictions of Sandinista food policy eroded support for the revolution. Social crisis and hunger combined with luxury consumption of some Sandinista leaders led to disillusion by the late 1980s. During transition, consumption became a time-consuming, frustrating experience. The urban poor had to rely on old survival mechanisms while the new elites revived US consumer ideals as a model.Version of recor

Das Mittelalter. Perspektiven mediävistischer Forschung / Linked Open Data and Manuscript Descriptions
This chapter explores the intersection of Linked Open Data (LOD) and manuscript descriptions, emphasising the importance of data availability under the LOD principles for research in the humanities. It begins by outlining the principles of Linked Data, including Tim Berners-Lee’s five-star LOD model and technologies such as RDF that underpin the Semantic Web. The discussion then shifts to the application of these technologies to medieval studies, highlighting how archives and libraries are making resources available online. The article delves into the Text Encoding Initiative (TEI) and its role in creating machine-readable manuscript descriptions, evaluating selected digital scholarly editions for their use of LOD. Finally, a case study on the GAMS repository at the University of Graz demonstrates current practices and proposes a possible approach to unifying manuscript ontology to enhance interoperability and scholarly utility in a real-world example. The study critically discusses the current status of LOD for medieval manuscript studies and underscores its potential to improve research accessibility and connectivity in the future.
Version of recor
Contemporary Southeastern Europe / Albanians Ante Portas: Representation of Albanian Migrants in the British Media
The topic of Albanian immigration to the UK recently gained prominence in the British media, evoking sensationalist claims and tropes of Albanians being prone to criminal activities, comprising a majority of people crossing to the UK illegally via the English Channel by small rafts and boats, even emphasising a surge of children born in the UK to Albanian parents. In this article, the authors conducted nominative and predicativediscourse analysis in order to identify crucial discursive strategies of the British media’sreporting on Albanian immigration in 2022 and 2023. Three representative outlets wereconsidered: left-oriented The Guardian, conservative The Times and right-wing The Sun.Some 200 articles featuring Albania/ns overall were identified and analysed, the majorityof which focused on immigration. It is argued that the over-representation of Albanian immigration in the British media and political life reiterates centuries-old prejudices and stereotypes about the Balkans, often presenting Albanians collectively as “intruders”, “criminals”, abusers of public funds, villains in the old threat narrative about the invasion of the British shores, and arguably instrumentalised them as a smokescreen for pressing internal economic and political problems
Contemporary Southeastern Europe / An Autoethnographic1 Account of the Anti-Corruption Student Protests in Serbia 2024/25
This autoethnographic piece documents the 2024/25 anti-corruption student protests inSerbia, exploring the student movement’s emergence, and its broader social implications.Through firsthand participation in plenums, protests, and blockades, I reflect on themesof resistance, alienation, and the creation of community. The piece situates the movementwithin Serbia’s political landscape, revealing the intergenerational tensions, struggles fordemocracy, and the role of trust in collective action. By weaving personal reflections withpolitical analysis, this work highlights how a new generation of students is reshaping political engagement in Serbia—challenging authority, reclaiming public space, and asserting their right to shape their own futures. The protests are not merely a demand for justice but a reawakening of civic agency
Contemporary Southeastern Europe / Performing Peace, Reframing Power: Öcalan’s Ceasefire Call and the Post-Conflict Imaginary in Kurdish Politics, the End of PKK?
This paper analyzes Abdullah Öcalan’s 2025 ceasefire call within the evolving dynamics ofthe Kurdish conflict in Turkey. Far from representing a straightforward gesture towardpeace, the call must be situated within a complex landscape of political repression, strategic recalibration, and contested leadership within the Kurdish movement. Drawing on insights from conflict transformation theory and the study of symbolic politics, this analysis argues that Öcalan’s message functions as both a tactical intervention and a performative act aimed at repositioning his authority, re-opening dialogue possibilities, and navigating heightened state repression against Kurdish political actors. The study situates the ceasefire call within broader regional developments, including Turkey’s intensified securitization of the Kurdish issue, intra-Kurdish fragmentation, and the increasing marginalization of democratic channels such as the Peoples’ Democratic Party (Halkların Demokratik Partisi, HDP). By examining official responses, political reception, and the broader strategic context, this paper contributes to an understanding of ceasefire declarations not merely as conflict-resolving tools but as instruments of symbolic contestation and political maneuvering. In doing so, it sheds light on the constraints and possibilities for political agency in authoritarian and post-conflict settings
