    No full text
The difficulty of being brought into the world. Thoughts on a theology of childhood The article looks at the role of children in theology, inspired by a quote from Ockham, which ascribes children an essential function in messianic redemption. The historical and mystical appreciation of children in theological discourse is used as a basis for a theology of childhood. Two prevailing idealistic images of childhood are examined: the innocent child as the quintessential image of purity and the competent child as the bearer of hope for social renewal. These ‘stereotypical’ images harbour harmful potentials by either suppressing childlike creativity or projecting unrealistic responsibility onto children. Instead, a nuanced theological perspective is called for that recognises children’s competence to act, but does not overwhelm them. The article advocates for a reflective approach to children’s perspectives in order to enable children to play an authentic role in theological and social discourses and to recognise their potential for renewal without overburdening them

Frontiers in Sports and Active Living / The perspectives of volunteers with disabilities and sport event organizers on educating and employing volunteers with disabilities

    No full text
Introduction: Inclusive sport events can increase the social inclusion of people with disabilities. While originally, people with disabilities are represented as athletes, they could also be a valuable resource volunteering at sport events. However, barriers to their inclusion exist due to a lack of accessibility at the event venue or missing knowledge of the event organizers about collaborating with people with disabilities. Training courses for volunteers with disabilities are rare but would help to integrate them at sport events. The present study reflects on the training course and the participants' implementation in different sport events. Methods: Therefore, six so called sport management assistants with disabilities (4 female and 2 male; age: M = 31.67; SD = 6.07) and five sport event organizers (3 female and 2 male; age: M = 41.20; SD = 9.04) were interviewed with a semi-structured guideline. Results: The feedback of both groups concerning their experiences was mainly positive. The training course prepared the sport management assistants with disabilities for their tasks at the sport events. The sport management assistant graduates were satisfied with their roles at the events but criticize the lack of accessibility. The organizers praised the enthusiastic workforces added to their teams and want to cooperate with volunteers with disabilities in future events. Discussion: Thus, preparatory courses for people with disabilities as an educational tool should be encouraged to promote inclusion at sport events on a larger scale.Version of recor

Frontiers in Remote Sensing / Deep learning outperforms existing algorithms in glacier surface velocity estimation with high-resolution data – the example of Austerdalsbreen, Norway

    No full text
Remote sensing is a key tool to derive glacier surface velocities but existing mapping methods, such as cross-correlation techniques, can fail where surface properties change temporally or where large velocity variations occur spatially. High-resolution datasets, such as UAV imagery, offer a promising solution to tackle these issues and to study small-scale glacier dynamics, but new workflows are required to handle such data. Therefore, we tested the potential of new deep learning-based image-matching algorithms for deriving glacier surface velocities across the ablation area of a glacier with strong spatial variability in surface velocities (100 m/yr) and substantial changes in surface properties between image acquisitions. For a thorough comparison of state-of-the-art methods and sensors, we applied three different techniques (cross-correlation using geoCosiCorr3D, feature tracking with ORB using SeaIceDrift and the new deep learning-based method using ICEpy4D) and three different platforms (Sentinel-2, PlanetScope, UAVs) to estimate glacier surface velocities. Results showed lowest errors for velocities derived with the deep learning-based approach applied to UAV imagery (RMSE = 2.17 m/yr, R2 = 0.99), followed by cross-correlation using Sentinel-2 images (RMSE = 21.0 m/yr, R2 = 0.59) and the deep learning-based approach with PlanetScope data (RMSE = 21.28 m/yr, R2 = 0.36). Cross-correlation with geoCosiCorr3D resulted in comparably high errors with the UAV dataset (RMSE = 36.22 m/yr, R2 = 0.24), whereas ORB-based feature tacking showed lowest performance with all sensors. Spatial patterns of computed velocities indicate that applying existing cross-correlation methods for areas with regular displacements or low glacier velocities yields suitable results on UAV data, but innovative deep learning-based approaches are required for resolving rapid changes in velocities or in surface properties. This novel method benefits from improved keypoint detection and matching through training using neural networks and data characterized by challenging geometries, outlier minimization and more robust descriptors by applying cross-attention layers. We conclude that continued development of deep learning-based feature tracking approaches for glacier velocity computations may substantially improve UAV-based velocity derivations applied to challenging situations. This method is able to deliver reliable displacement data in situations where traditional methods fail, which implies a new level of detail in understanding and interpreting glacier dynamics.Version of recor

Nursing Philosophy / Trust as a Solution to Human Vulnerability: Ethical Considerations on Trust in Care Robots

    No full text
In the care sector, professionals face numerous challenges, such as a lack of resources, overloaded wards, physical and psychological strain, stressful constellations with patients and cooperation with medical professionals. Care robots are therefore increasingly being used to provide relief or to test new forms of interaction. However, this also raises the question of trust in these technical companions and the potential vulnerability to which these people then expose themselves. This article deals with an ethical analysis of the two concepts of trust and vulnerability in the context of care robotics. The first step is to examine what can be understood by vulnerability, focusing specifically on Misztal's three proposed types (relationships, future anticipation, past experiences). This strategy is often used as a starting point by authors and also seems relevant for the connection to the concept of trust. In a second step, these three types of human vulnerability are examined on the basis of a technical concept of trust. It is shown that (1) relationships and thus also interdependence can create additional options, (2) the anticipation problem with regard to the actions of others also makes responsibility transferable and (3) an explication of freedom is also associated with potential traumatic experiences. The final step brings together the previous considerations and makes it clear once again that trust in a care robot need not only be associated with vulnerability, but that vulnerability can also potentially be reduced, transferred and overcome.Version of recor

Contemporary Southeastern Europe / A Very Complex Organism: Industrial Films on “3. maj” and “Brodosplit” Shipyards

    No full text
This paper analyses three industrial films shot in two out of three largest Yugoslav shipyards: Treći maj – brodogradilište (3. maj) – brod by Frano Vodopivec from 1976, Treći maj by Petar Trinajstić and Željko Luković from 1983 both shot in Rijeka and Brodograđevna industrija Split: Zapisi iz škvera filmed in 1984 (list of nine authors in bibliography), shot in Split. Although industrial films are still a somewhat underresearched genre, their importance stems from the fact that this once “mighty industry” is currently hanging on a thread, and these films will probably soon become one of major memory channels for the future generations on topic of shipbuilding. This is why this paper takes in consideration represented content – such as the tradition of referring tothe ships as “living beings” – but also tries to understand it within a larger shipbuilding culture. Finally, it is of importance to grasp the possible meanings of these films in the moment of their production, but also today as it has passed nearly fifty years from their creation, and therefore our final remarks are written from a post-socialist, but also postshipbuilding prism

PhiN.

    No full text
For around two decades, email has been dominating written communication in formal and informal professional contexts and to some extent in the private sphere. It can be assumed that email corre- spondence has already largely replaced the exchange of traditional letters. This article from the per- spective of an archivist addresses the question of whether this development is associated with a change or loss of information. The focus is not on the individually changing topics and content, but rather on determining the formal and structural elements typical of each form of communication, comparing them and examining their information content. Materiality, graphic and textual patterns as well as characteristics derived from the specific modes of transportation/transmission form the basis of a description that is intended to contribute to the better understanding of email as a new historical source type.Version of recor

The present thesis examines the implementation of Article 10 of the European Charter for Regional or Minority Languages (ECRML) by administrative authorities and public services in the Federal Republic of Germany, as well as in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The focus of the thesis is on the extent according to which the federal structures of both states affect the application of the legal provisions on language protection. The research is based on a legal-dogmatic approach and comparative legal methods, taking into account the state reports and evaluation reports from the Committee of Experts. It evaluates up to what extent the measures taken are in accordance with the requirements of the Charter and assesses whether federal structures have a supportive or inhibiting effect. The results confirm the impact of federal elements on the implementation and they reveal that they can both function as opportunities and obstacles. While in the Federal Republic of Germany, language protection benefits from a stable federal system, Bosnia and Hercegovina faces the challenge of ensuring linguistic rights within a complex, ethnically and politically shaped state structure. The thesis concludes with a critical reflection on the strengths and weaknesses of federal systems in the context of minority language protection and offers a perspective on potential future developments.vorgelegt von Elmina MusićDiplomarbeit Universität Graz 202

This master's thesis examines the interpersonal challenges faced by nursing trainees during their practical training. The central research question explores which difficulties arise and how schools and nursing educators can support train-ees in constructively dealing with conflicts. Nursing requires not only technical skills but also emotional and social competencies essential for professional success. Practical training presents particular challenges, as trainees must navigate complex social dynamics while integrating into healthcare teams. The study employs a literature review methodology, analyzing national and international research on nursing education, interpersonal interactions, and the role of educators. Key themes include communication theories, conflict escalation models, and support strategies such as mentoring, supervision, and peer mediation. The findings highlight that unresolved conflicts and hostile interactions, including bullying, significantly impact trainees' wellbeing and learning outcomes. To enhance the resilience and professional development of trainees, the study identifies effective didactic and psychosocial interventions. These include structured reflection sessions, mediation techniques, and tailored mentoring pro-grams. The thesis concludes that fostering a supportive learning environment and equipping educators with conflict management skills can improve training quality and ultimately contribute to better patient care.Maria ModritschMasterarbeit Universität Graz 2025Zusammenfassung auf Deutsch und Englisc
