Spatial Rent Indices for Cities Around the World: A Comparison of Airbnb and Long-Term Rentals

    No full text
Housing rents are one of the most important and difficult elements of spatial cost of living comparisons. Difficulties arise from the lack of sufficiently detailed and harmonized data, especially at the international level. The emergence of Airbnb has created a valuable new source of internationally harmonized, micro-level rental data that circumvent these difficulties. In this paper, we combine hedonic regression and multilateral price index methods to construct an Airbnb spatial rent index for 60 cities across Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa, and Australia. We then use this index to investigate four main issues: (i) How Airbnb rents differ across cities; (ii) The relationship between Airbnb and long-term rents; (iii) The role that rents play in determining spatial price differences across cities; (iv) The dependence of housing affordability comparisons on the extent to which rents are quality adjusted. Limina / Was bedeutet Frieden in postmodernen Zeiten? Versuch einer philosophischen Einholung

    No full text
A philosophical reflection Kant’s political utopia of “perpetual peace” is rooted in the philosophical convictions of the Enlightenment and proclaims that universal reason will usher in an age of universal peace that only recognises war as an antiquated relic. He paradigmatically lays out a vision arising from a philosophy of history in which reason eventually replaces unreason in line with Enlightenment’s belief in progress. A vision that shall prove itself to be wishful thinking. It appears that both the promise of the Enlightenment and the potential of the modern age failed in their realisation. Following the various traumas of the last century, postmodernism attempts to confront and revive modern ideas. This article sets out to investigate whether this may offer impulses for our current understanding of peace

Limina / Komplexes Friedens- und Wissenschaftsverständnis einer kritischenFriedensforschung

    No full text
Particularly in this time of multiple crises or polycrisis, the causes and solutions for social, economic, international and geopolitical, as well as ecological problems are highly complex. Critical peace research investigates the intersectionality of inequalities and oppression, and seeks to realise its normative objective. This requires an integrative, complex, multi-layered and broad analytical understanding of peace and science that reflects categories of political science while simultaneously expanding and transcending their inter- and transdisciplinary boundaries. This impartial and multiperspective examination of systemic structures underlying war and peace is a fundamental characteristic of critical peace studies, as this article demonstrates

Limina / Frieden als ethische Verpflichtung? : Die Debatte am Beispiel des russisch-ukrainischen Krieges

    No full text
This text discusses the claim that peace is an ethical obligation. It advocates for replacing the centuries-old model of a just war with that of a just peace, as adopted, for example, by the UN Charter or the Evangelical Church in Germany. Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine puts this maxim along with any pacifist position to a severe test. While some declare non-violence obsolete in the face of this war, others remain firm in their belief in just peace as the guiding principle. These controversial debates illustratively demonstrate that all parties face ethical dilemmas that cannot be resolved and that require a constant reevaluation of what is right or wrong in every specific situation
