    No full text
The presented master thesis investigates challenges and encumbrances regarding the field of elementary pedagogy from professionals perspective, with placing following three research questions: Which aspects are considered as challenging for elementary teachers referring to their working environment in nursery school? Which influence do have these challenges on health and work satisfaction in the elementary teachers point of view? Which measurements can be considered as helpful? Through guideline-based problem-centered interviews with ten elementary teachers, working in Graz, investigations have been conducted. These analysis have been taken place using the qualitative content analysis according to Mayring. It indicates that factors such as noise level, lack of employees, bureaucracy, payment and the child per stuff ratios are perceived as demanding. Especially pedagogical teachers in leading positions are challenged with combining their pedagogical work and their leading position. The impact of these encumbrances on health and work satisfaction are crucial and have an influence on physical and mental wellbeing. The research results are showing a significant relevance for society and politics and underline the necessity of structural changes, in order to sustainably improve the work satisfaction and health. This research offers a wide ranged insight into the working reality of elementary teachers and can be used as a support for future developments concerning the field of education.Anna Maria Kern B.A.Masterarbeit Universität Graz 2024Zusammenfassungen auf Deutsch und Englisc

Case Studies on Transport Policy / Beyond polarisation and simplified storylines: Exploring discursive struggles over a transport infrastructure project in Vienna, Austria

    No full text
Major transportation infrastructure projects are often associated with public disputes and polarised debates. However, by using the example of a controversial infrastructure project in Vienna (the “Lobau highway”), we show that a binary “pro-versus-con” framing does not do justice to the complex realities of such debates. Based on a Q methodological analysis, we reveal four distinct perspectives, which reflect a broad spectrum of “generally pro” and “generally against” positions: (i) More roads, more traffic, (ii) Less politics, more facts, (iii) Better roads, better city, and (iv) The highway must be built. While our analysis points at unexpected overlaps between perspectives and some entry points for consensus building, it also highlights disagreement on fundamental beliefs such as the impact of roads on the environment, the phenomenon of induced traffic, or the right to drive a car. Against this background, we discuss the wider socio-political context of the analysed debate, reflect on the basic premise of consensus building, and derive policy implications.Version of recor

AmLit / Queer Landscapes: New England Female Farmers and Masculinity in the Midwest

    No full text
This article outlines expressions of female masculinity in writing from rural New England. An initial framing of the enclosed New England garden as symbolic of feminine normalization allows for an analysis of two forms of subversion of this norm in regional short stories from the nineteenth century. The article begins with an exploration of the figure of the female farmer (and the resulting rejection of the traditional True Woman) in short stories by Mary E. Wilkins Freeman and Sarah Orne Jewett. It continues with a comparison to newly emerging depictions of the masculine New Woman symbolically situated in the open expanse of the Midwest, as found in Willa Cather's short story "Tommy, the Unsentimental." Such a comparative line of questioning enables deeper reflection on regional literary expressions of female masculinity at the end of the nineteenth century

Austrian Law Journal / Independence and Pluralism of Public Service Broadcasting and its Governing Bodies in Austria? : On the decision of the Austrian Constitutional Court of 5 October 2023, G 215/2022

The Austrian Constitutional Court has recently annulled provisions of the Federal Act on the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF Act) regarding the composition and appointment of members of the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation’s (the ORF's) governing bodies as unconstitutional. The Court found that these provisions concerning the Foundation Council and the Audience Council of the ORF were inconsistent with the constitutional requirements as laid down in Art I para 2 Constitutional Broadcasting Act and Art 10 ECHR, namely the requirements of independence and pluralistic composition of these bodies. In particular, the Constitutional Court ruled on the question of the extent to which the bodies of the ORF must be independent from the state, state authorities and political parties. In this decision, unlike the German Federal Constitutional Court did in a case concerning the governing bodies of a German public broadcasting operator, the Austrian Constitutional Court in its decision does not refer to any constitutional guarantee that would require statutory law to ensure the ORF’s bodies’ sufficient “distance from the state” (“Staatsferne”). However, as will be shown in this text, there are no fundamental differences between the constitutional requirements established by the German Federal Constitutional Court and the Austrian Constitutional Court in their respective case law

Contemporary Southeastern Europe / “A Modest Soldier in the Great Army of Communists”: VisualRepresentations of Women in Ceaușescu’s Romania

My research investigates, using discourse analysis and visual semiotics, the norms andideological guidelines of Communist propaganda regarding gender identity and sex roles, asexpressed in the magazine Femeia, between 1965-1989. Femeia was, at the time, the officialmedia outlet of the National Council of Women, directly involved in educating andmobilising women. The discourse and visuals of Femeia reinforce the idea that, in fact, women were the collective character of women’s emancipation, as anonymity was crucial ina totalitarian regime that did not tolerate individualism but advocated abnegation, selfsacrificeand devotion

Contemporary Southeastern Europe / The National Folklore Festival of Gjirokastër: An Analysisof its Audiovisual Representation

    No full text
The Gjirokastra National Folklore Festival has been the most important showcase forstaged performances of traditional expressive culture during the Communist regime. Itwas held every five years in Gjirokastër from 1968. More than 1500 people participated, and almost all Albanian institutions - on local and central levels – were involved in theorganization. Alongside, an entire machinery of media coverage was involved, from soundand audiovisual recordings for scholarly purposes to TV broadcasting and the productionof documentaries and feature films. My focus is the documentaries produced for each ofthe five editions, now found in the Albanian Film Archive. Through these films, we engagewith the Festival as an event per se and not just as a scene for staged traditionalexpressive culture. This can shed light on different aspects of audiovisual representation, that is, how it has been captured, shaped, and represented as a cinematic experience. Thisis not supposed to be just a film analysis but a way of simultaneously engaging andinterpreting what we see and hear, through a conjunction between film studies, ethnomusicology and anthropology

Contemporary Southeastern Europe / Selling the Otherness – the Stereotyped Image of the Balkanin Serbian Art of the Early 2000s

    No full text
The image of countries once constituting Yugoslavia, imposed by the West, was affectedduring the period of the dissolution in the 90s. This region was soon (again) perceived as abarbarian space, exotic and far away from civilized Europe, while the search for identity, the crash of value systems, and inflation influenced life within parted territories. Due topolitical circumstances, the art scene in Serbia was completely isolated, whilesimultaneously, the idea of art was standardized and shaped by the perspective ofeconomically powerful Western countries. In this paper we will follow the generation ofSerbian contemporary artists starting their career at the very beginning of the 21st centurywhen the country finally stopped being in isolation. To become visible in the West, Serbianartists appropriated the image of exotic Other from the Balkans and played with it.Combining constitutive elements of Western art institutions with traditional Balkancultural elements, these artists created an image the West wanted to buy. We will finallyanalyze if, when criticizing through the appropriation of the imposed gaze in their work,Serbian contemporary artists really succeeded in moving away from the Western image ofthe Balkans or simply supported it more
