    No full text
With the decisions issued in the Grand Chamber on June 18, 2024 in the cases A./General- staatsanwaltschaft Hamm and QR/Bundesrepublik Deutschland, the CJEU commented for the first time on questions concerning the effect of asylum decisions by the member states. On the one hand, this article serves as a discussion of the decisions and, on the other hand, ex- amines the question of whether and, if so, what effects the CJEU’s decisions will have on the CEAS

Contemporary Southeastern Europe / Autocratic Legalism in Kosovo? Democratic backsliding under the Vetëvendosje (LVV)

    No full text
This paper analyzes Kosovo's democratic backsliding under the Vetëvendosje (Self-Determination, LVV) government since 2021, and argues that its policies and actions, while presented as rule-of-law reforms, exhibit characteristics of autocratic legalism. The systematic targeting of independent institutions (especially the Constitutional Court, the State Prosecutor's office, and the media), manipulation of public resources for electoral gain, and controversial unilateral actions in the northern part of Kosovo demonstrate a pattern of undermining Kosovo’s liberal -democratic values. While largely operating within a legal framework, these actions cumulatively risk erodingKosovo's liberal-democratic constitutional order, which was developed by the international community following NATO’s humanitarian intervention in Kosovo in 1999

Contemporary Southeastern Europe / Serbian audiences’ news consumption and choosing sides in the Russia-Ukraine war

    No full text
Public attitudes toward the Russian invasion of Ukraine in Serbia diverge sharply from broader European trends, with a majority of citizens siding with Russia. While Serbia’s government officially supports Ukrainian territorial integrity, it has refrained from joining EU sanctions, reflecting a complex international position and a media landscape dominated by pro-Russian narratives. In this study, we use original survey data from anonline sample of 2,027 respondents to examine how media trust, political orientations, and news consumption patterns shape both sides taken in the war and satisfaction with media reporting. Logistic regression analysis shows that trust in government-aligned pro-Russian media and support for the ruling party are the strongest predictors of siding with Russia. The same variables also explain satisfaction with news coverage of the war, suggesting a transfer of trust between media and message. Those with stronger anti-Western sentiment are more inclined to side with Russia and evaluate war reportingpositively. However, the dominant media narratives also support this stance and reassurethem of the validity of their worldview. Our findings point to a highly polarised andasymmetrically structured media and political environment, where partisan alignment and selective media trust strongly influence geopolitical perceptions and the views about the media. This research contributes to understanding how political loyalties and media systems influence public opinion in hybrid regimes during major international crises

Contemporary Southeastern Europe / Operation Storm’s 30th Anniversary in Croatia: Narratives and Counter-Narratives

    No full text
State elites have often used wars as a source to advance selective narratives promoting national unity and state legitimacy. In Croatia, the dominant narrative about the August 1995 Operation Storm, which led to Croatia’s victory in the War of Independence against Serbia-supported Croatian Serb secessionists, is a case in point. This narrative, however, has been challenged by counter-narratives that draw attention to crimes against Serb civilians and the exodus of Serbs in the context of the operation. This article analyzes these conflicting narratives on the occasion of Storm’s 30th anniversary in 2025, focusing on commemorations carried out by the Croatian government and Croatia’s Serb NationalCouncil. It argues that the 2025 events show the enduring strength of the dominant narrative and the continuation of the aforementioned divergences, amplifying the challenges to Croatian Serbs’ social position in the face of issues like the mainstreaming of nationalist elements in Croatia’s public sphere

    No full text
This article is all about the idea of othering in religious education from a Protestant, Catholic, and Islamic point of view. The goal is to show that differences aren’t bad but can be a useful resource for teaching and theology. It mixes theory with personal thoughts and real-life examples from schools to show how othering happens in everyday life. Reference is also made to theological approaches that would be suitable as starting points for an interreligious theology, which, in its educational form as interreligious learning, can be seen as the guiding principle of this article. On this basis, religious education implications for difference-sensitive teacher training and lesson planning are formulated. Thearticle is intended as an interreligious invitation to critically analyse othering and work on it in a transformative way, in the sense of a plurality-capable and discrimination-critical religious education

Imaginationen künstlicher Menschen : Interdisziplinäre Perspektiven auf zeitgenössische Romane und Filme

    No full text
The question of the conditio humana must be posed anew today under the conditions of the almost fantastic dimensions of the media-technological disruption caused by artificial intelligence processes. In order to be able to question the anthropological difference in a meaningful way, however, the imaginations and figurations of the arts are also required. This volume approaches artistic reflections on artificial humans and human-like machines against the backdrop of the increasing use of humanoids in our living environment. Scholars from the disciplines of German studies, media studies, philosophy and sociology analyse figurations and narratives of human-robot interaction in novels and films.Version of recor
