Growth Performance of Different Lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus) Varieties under an Acacia mangium-Based Agroforestry System in the Chhattisgarh Plains
This study was conducted in the year 2023-2024 at the Herbal Garden of Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya, Raipur, Chhattisgarh, India, to evaluate the growth performance of Acacia mangium trees and different lemongrass (Cymbopogon flexuosus) varieties in an agroforestry system. Growth parameters of Acacia mangium trees were assessed, an average height of 19.65 meters, a diameter at breast height (DBH) of 35.85 cm, a crown spread of 8.13 meters, and a tree volume of 2.02 m³. The growth performance of the lemongrass varieties showed significant variability among varieties. T4-Neema recorded the maximum number of tillers (65.53), highest leaf width (2.60 cm), and maximum plant spread (75.52 cm), while T1 Krishna showed the highest plant height (157.20 cm) and leaf length (130.07 cm), while T2 CG-1 showed the maximum leaf area index (40.10). In all treatments, T8-kalam shows the lowest plant height (99.77 cm), number of tillers (31.50), leaf length (87.41 cm), plant spread (47.05 cm), and leaf area index (17.02). The results indicate that genetic selection plays a critical role in optimizing growth performance under agroforestry conditions. Varieties T4-Neema and T7-Praman showed superior growth attributes, while T8-Kalam showed the lowest
Assessment of Phenological and Yield Characteristics of Apple (Malus × domestica Borkh) Varieties
Phenology has gained recently a considerable emphasis as a method for assessing the impacts of changing climate on plant species. Shifting in phenological stages changes can have rippling impacts on environment. Quantifying the effects of these shifting changes on plants is therefore crucial. Knowledge of the dates and duration of particular phenological stages and their variations can be a valuable source of information for organizing, planning and implementation of some regular and special horticultural activities. The phenological study of apple is an essential component of the study as critical phenological stages of the apple are highly reliant on environment, they also have significant practical and scientific implications in the domain of selection. In particular, proper flowering and fruit ripening time are very critical to achieve optimum fruit yield and quality. Fruit yield is an important parameter that determines the acceptability of a cultivar by consumers. The present investigation was undertaken to evaluate the apple varieties for their phenology and yield under Kashmir conditions. Four varieties viz., Super Chief, Red Chief, Gala Redlum and Mitch Gala were used for study. Phenological characteristics revealed that Mitch Gala was earliest in all the phenological stages and Super Chief was late. The blooming period of the studied varieties indicated the synchronizing behaviour of the varieties, which is a prerequisite for effective pollination and adequate fruit set. As far as flowering is concerned, Mitch Gala was earliest to bloom and Gala Redlum was late. Fruit production characteristics revealed that Gala Redlum and Mitch Gala. In terms of yield characteristics, highest yield of 20.58 kg/tree was recorded in Gala Redlum followed by 19.40 kg/tree in Mitch Gala
Economics of Fieldpea (Pisum sativum L.) as Influenced by Phosphorus Levels and Bio-fertilizers in Central Plains of Uttar Pradesh, India
A field experiment was conducted at the student instructional farm of CSAUA&T, Kanpur, during the Rabi season of 2021-22 and 2022-23. Sandy loam was the texture of the experimental soil. There are twelve treatment involving combinations of phosphorus and biofertilizers with three replication of factorial randomized block design (FRBD). A fieldpea variety IPFD 6-3 was planted according to recommended agronomic practices. The results of these studies indicate that fieldpea cultivation over a two-year period is consistent with T12 (P90 R1 PSB1), the most economically effective treatment and also recorded the highest economics parametric values i.e., maximum cost of cultivation of ₹39006 & ₹39751, gross return of ₹ 106055 & ₹118535, net return of ₹67049 & ₹ 78784 and benefit to cost ratios were 1.72 & 1.98 followed by the treatment T11
Impact of Nano Urea and Zinc Foliar Applications on Growth and Yield Parameters of Radish (Raphanus sativus L.) cv. Pusa Chetki Across Two Seasons
A field experiment was conducted in the Orchard, Department of Horticulture, Faculty of Agriculture, Annamalai University, Annamalainagar during February to April 2024 and in a farmer’s field, Anthiyur, Erode during June to August 2024 in two seasons. It was laid out in randomized block design with eleven treatments replicated thrice. The treatments comprised with combinations of nano urea and zinc foliar applications along with a control. The results of the experiment revealed that the maximum values for pre- harvest observations viz., shoot length, number of leaves, leaf area; post- harvest observations like weight of shoot, weight of root, root: shoot ratio, length of root, grith of root, root yield plot-1, root yield hectare-1 and biochemical attributes like ascorbic acid and calcium content were recorded in the plots which received the application of basal RDF plus foliar spray of 0.4 per cent nano urea plus 0.1 per cent nano Zn. It was engrossing to observe that the nutrient uptake of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, zinc and benefit cost ratio were also influenced the maximum by the same treatment. This was followed by the treatment which received the application of basal RDF plus foliar spray of 0.4 per cent nano urea plus 0.05 per cent nano Zn and the least values for all attributes was noted in control
Variation of Micronutrients in Soil and Leaves of Litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.) Orchards in Kangra District of Himachal Pradesh, India
Management of micronutrients require special attention in orchard soils as the requirement of micronutrients for nutrition, physiological need and quality control is more in fruit crops. Distribution and variability of micronutrients in the soil and leaf of litchi orchards of Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh was studied. For this, forty soil sampling sites from litchi growing areas were selected randomly. Surface (0-15 cm) and sub-surface (15-30 cm) soil samples were collected during the months of October to November, 2018 after the harvesting of litchi fruit and analyzed for DTPA extractable micronutrients. Litchi leaf samples were collected during August to September, 2018 from where the soil samples were collected and analyzed for the content of micronutrients. Results revealed that all the micronutrients in soil were found high in status except zinc which was medium in status. Most of the micronutrient contents of litchi leaf were sufficient. All the DTPA-extractable micronutrients were negatively correlated with soil pH, EC, available P, K and S and exchangeable calcium and magnesium. Highest significant positive correlation of leaf iron, copper, manganese and zinc was found with the irrespective availability in soil
Effect of Moisture Conservation Practices on Productivity, Profitability and Water Use Efficiency in Rainfed Linseed (Linum usitatissimum L.) under Mid Hill Conditions of Himachal Pradesh
A field experiment was conducted at Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Krishi Vishvavidyalaya (CSK HPKV), Palampur to find out the best moisture-conservation practices in linseed grown under rainfed conditions. The experiment consisting of seven treatments related to moisture conservation was conducted in Randomized Block Design with three replications. Results of the study revealed that applying farmyard manure (FYM) at 10 t/ha, either by spreading or incorporating, and using straw mulching at the same rate significantly enhanced plant height, yield attributes, seed yield, economic returns (in term of higher gross, net returns, B C ratio), production and economic efficiency in linseed. These treatments increased seed yield by 47.4 to 55.4% compared to no mulching. The higher production and economic efficiencies achieved by said respective treatments ranged from 6.03 to 6.32 kg/ha/day and 76.12 to 74.61 Rs./ha/day, respectively. Additionally, these treatments increased oil yield by 56.8, 53.4 and 49.1%, respectively, over no mulching, however, the increase in the oil content was not significant. Incorporation of FYM 10 t/ha was proved to be best for recording higher consumptive use and WUE over rest of the treatments
Effects of Climate Variability on Bushfire Regimes in the Bagoué Region, Côte d\u27Ivoire
Bushfires are an important factor in the dynamics of savannah landscapes. This study is carried out in the Bagoué region to evaluate the relationships between climatic variability and bushfire regimes. To achieve this objective, rainfall and temperature data were analyzed. The information’s were collected with 300 heads of household surveyed, 100 in Boundiali, Kouto and Tengrela were selected, respectively. A purposive sampling was defined according to the following criteria: any person who uses fires in agricultural activity; the respondent must be at least 30 years old and have been in the survey for at least 20 years. The results recorded from 1990 to 2002, showed that the rainfall was increased at 14.8%followed by a 10.7% and was decreased between 2003 and 2020 in Boundiali. Average annual rainfall was 1,408.99 mm, with a 13.2% increase between 1990 and 2002 and a 20.1% deficit between 2003 and 2020. Average annual rainfall in Tengrela also showed h1,515.9 mm, with a surplus of 171.5 mm, i.e. an increase of 12.8% from 1990 to 2002 and a rainfall deficit of 9.2% from 2003 to 2020. Temperatures rise to 0.7°C, 0.74°C and 0.74°C in Boundiali, Kouto and Tengrela between 1990 and 2020, respectively. Three fire periods were identified with lowest intensities and frequencies. The combination of rainfall declining, the temperatures increasing, the highest dry biomass, and the agricultural activities contributes to the emergence of bushfires in the Bagoué region. This study highlights the importance of addressing these factors to mitigate the impact of bushfires. Dry Leaf Biomass Stability of Stevia (Stevia rebaudiana) Clones over Different Environments
In order to identify stable high-yielding stevia (Stevia rebaudiana) genotypes, a multi-environment testing was conducted over four different growing environments. The experiments were conducted in a randomized block design, with three replications during 2019 and 2020. The combined analysis of variance showed significant variation for genotype, environment, and G×E interaction for all studied traits. The highest mean performance for all the traits revealed that Hoshiarpur has favorable conditions for stevia cultivation, and CSIR-IHBT-ST-1801 followed by CSIR-IHBT-ST-G12 were the best performers over all the locations. The Eberhart and Russell model-based stability parameters demonstrated that CSIR-IHBT-ST-1801 was a stable performer for dry leaf biomass, and that was also further confirmed by GGE biplot analysis. Primary shoots were major contributors to the dry leaf biomass, as indicated by the substantial positive leaf biomass contribution shown by Pearson\u27s correlation coefficients. As a result, primary shoots might be utilized as selection criteria to increase the dry leaf biomass. The CSIR-IHBT-ST-1801 could be used as a stable high-yielding variety for the targeted regions and also, can be used for further stevia breeding programs
Assessment of Drought Stress of Two Genotypes of Sorghum (Sorghun bicolor L.) Using Physiological Parameters
The present experiment conducted in the period of rabi season at Sorghum Improvement Project, M.P.K.V., Rahuri, Maharashtra during the period of 2016 to 2017. During investigation to observed the physiological parameters under non stress and moisture stress condition with cross two genotypes SPV 1830 x IS 6427. In this study of mean performance of the basic generation P1, P2, F1, F2, B1 and B2 of the cross SPV 1830 x IS 6427 was observed various physiological parameters viz. photosynthetic rate, rate of transpiration, stomatal conductance, relative leaf water content, SPAD reading, total chlorophyll content and chlorophyll stability index. The present results to observed the B2 and F1 generation recorded significantly highest photosynthesis rate (25.98 and 22.47 µ mole CO2 m-2s-1) under non stress and moisture stress condition, respectively. The parent B1 recorded highest transpiration rate (3.27 and 1.92 mmole H2O m-2s-1) under non stress and moisture stress condition, respectively. The F1 and B1 generation recorded significantly the highest mean for stomatal conductance (0.24 and 0.18 mole m-2 s-1) under non stress condition and moisture stress condition, respectively. The B1 generation recorded the highest total chlorophyll content (3.30 and 2.08 %) under non stress and moisture stress condition, respectively. The present experimental study to observe physiological parameters of sorghum cross two genotype (SPV 1830 x IS 6427) directly affected in growth and grain yield under non-stress and moisture stress condition. Therefore, present study to find out the drought stress effects on sorghum through the physiological parameters
Advances in Gibberellic Acid Application in Cropping
For plants to thrive, phytohormones play a key role in their development and growth. A total of five different phytohormones have been identified here: auxin, gibberellins, cytokinin, ethylene and abscisic acid. The growth-promoting and dormancy-breaking effects of gibberellin make it a crucial phytohormone. Japan was the site of its discovery around the end of the nineteenth century. The most often utilized type of gibberellic acid is GA3, which is a metabolite. Tobacco and lettuce, require bright light to germinate, and may be grown with the aid of gibberellic acid even in the dark. Internode elongation, like in the case of pea or maize suffering from dwarfism, is another benefit of GA. It aids in the development of seedless tomato and grape types. During germination, gibberellins in the aleurone layer of the endosperm of cereal grains release particular enzymes like amylase, which hydrolyzes starch to form simple sugars. These sugars are then transferred to the developing embryo to be used as a source of energy. Gibberellin plays a crucial role in fruit setting, and it also aids fruit development and increases fruit size, making it one of the most significant growth regulators
