Role of Bio-formulation on Enhancement of Seed Quality and Yield in Garden Pea (Pisum sativum L.)
A research work was conducted at Assam Agricultural University, Jorhat during rabi season of 2021-2022 to evaluate the effect of different bio-formulations on enhancement of seed quality and yield in garden pea. The laboratory analysis were conducted in Complete Randomized Design for seed vigour characteristics whereas the field experiment was laid out in factorial Randomized Block Design for assessing plant growth and yield attributing characters. The experiment involved two varieties of garden pea viz., Arkel and DS-10, each having seven treatments with three replications. The treatments comprised of T1- untreated control, T2- Hydropriming, T3- seed priming with Trichoderma viride @ 5g/kg, T4- PSB @ 10g/kg, T5- Rhizobium @ 20 g/kg, T6- PSB @ 10g/kg + Rhizobium @ 20 g/kg and T7- Pseudomonas fluorescens @ 10 g/kg. Before sowing, the seeds of both the varieties were soaked in water for 4 hours and bio-primed with the above mentioned bio-formulations. The results revealed significant difference amongst the treatments for most of the plant growth promoting and yield attributing characters. T6 exhibited highest performance for most of the characters. Varietal performance of DS-10 was found better than Arkel. Laboratory observations also recorded the maximum germination (%) and seed vigour index I & II in the T6 treatment. However, significant increase in germination related characters and early seedling growth was exhibited by all the treatments over the control. The experiment thus revealed that although all bio-formulations viz., PSB, Rhizobium, Trichoderma viride, Pseudomonas fluorescens alone and in combination could improve seed quality, seed yield & yield attributing characters but the best performance could be achieved in T6 i.e. by applying PSB@ 10g/kg + Rhizobium @ 20 g/kg. Therefore, it could be suggested that seed treatment with bio-formulations should be done for better seed production and seed yield in garden pea
Effect of Zeolite on Sugarcane Growth, Yield and Juice Quality of Sugarcane in Water Stress Condition
Soil moisture and nitrogen (N) are two of the most important factors affecting the production of crop. Zeolites, which are environmental friendly, ubiquitous, and inexpensive, have been extensively used in agricultural activities. These minerals are considered as soil conditioners to improve soil properties. In order to study the effect of zeolite on sugarcane Zeolite @ 75 and 100 kg/ha was applying at the time of planting with fertilizer dose with 100, 75 & 50% irrigation in a randomized block design was carried out with three replications in 2017-18 to 2020-21. The cane yield, CCS%, no. of milliable canes, milliable cane height, girth, internodes, soil macronutrients, nutrient uptake, water use efficiency and economic profitability was highest in the treatment receiving the application of RDF + 100 kg/ha zeolite + 100% irrigation followed by treatment with RDF + 100 kg/ha zeolite + 75% irrigation. Therefore, it is concluded that zeolite application improves both sugarcane growth and water use efficiency (WUE)
Influence of Plant Spacing and Bio-fertilizers on Yield and Yield Attributing Characters of Rain-fed Soybean at Damazin in Blue Nile State, Sudan
This study had the objective of evaluating the effect of biofertilizers on the performance of soybean plants under different planting spacing. It was conducted during the summer seasons of 2018 and 2019at one site at Demonstration Farm of Damazin Agricultural Research Station, Sudan. The different plant spacing designated as D1, D2, and D3 (5, 10, and 15 cm between plants) under three types of bio-fertilizers as Rhizobacteria (B1), Azotobacter (B2), Bacillus (B3) and control (B0). The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block design (RCBD) with three replications as split-plots trail. The result revealed that the improvement due to the application of fertilizers with wider, spacing D3 stimulated plant growth and caused an increase in dry matter accumulation and high leaf area and gave the higher number of pods and seeds/pod, particularly at inoculation with B1 and B2 bacteria. While sowing seeds inoculated with B1or B2 under closer spacing resulted in higher seed yield per unit area. To achieve optimum results in soybean variety Sudan 1, the crop may be sown in plant spacing of 10cm with inoculation seeds with B1or B2 to achieve a high plant population per unit area to obtain higher seed yield
Evaluation of Promising Genotypes of French Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) Suitable for India
French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L) is an important leguminous vegetable grown throughout the world. Both green fleshy pods and dry seeds are used for consumption purpose. Being a meat of the poor, the crop is widely grown in India. In spite of having lot of importance, this crop suffers from poor yield resulting from very old and local varieties being grown by the farmers in North Eastern Region. It was the need of the hours to introduce some high yielding, stress tolerant varieties newly developed elsewhere. In view of this an investigation was undertaken at the Department of Horticulture, AAU, Jorhat on eighteen (18) french bean genotypes received from All India Coordinated Research Project on Vegetable crops. The research work involved conduct of 3 station trials, 3 state zonal trials in Assam, multilocation trials throughout the country. The trials were conducted following Randomized Block Design with three replications. The data were collected on yield and its attributes. Field observations were also made on incidence of rust and bacterial blight. In station and zonal trials, among all genotypes, Arka Anup and Arka Subidha were found to be better for green pod yield ranging from 95 – 110 q/ha. The multilocation trials conducted in different national centres exhibited average pod yield of 149.1 q/ha in Arka Anup and 141.9 q/ha in Arka Subidha. On an average there was 20 – 25% yield increase over the best check variety ‘Contender’. Arka Anup was a flat poded variety whereas Arka Subidha was a round poded variety. The edible green pods were getting ready for picking at 60 - 70 days after sowing. Field observation on incidence of diseases indicated resistance reaction to rust and bacterial blight in both these varieties. In the national level also they have been found better and hence released and notified by the Central Seed Sub Committee for different states of the country covering North, Central and South India. Considering yield performance and other desirable characteristics, extensive cultivation of these varieties may be done in Assam and better performing states also
Determinants of Pesticides Choice in Market Gardening in Urban and Peri-Urban Areas of the Cities of Bobo-Dioulasso and Ouagadougou in Burkina Faso
In Burkina Faso, population growth and accelerated urbanization are accompanied by an increase in agricultural production, in order to meet the growing demand for food, especially vegetables. The objective of this study is to identify the factors that influence the use of pesticides in market gardening in urban and peri-urban areas of Burkina Faso. To this end, a cross-sectional survey was conducted in 2023 among 393 farmers, selected by proportional stratified random sampling in the two communes of Bobo Dioulasso and Ouagadougou. The average age of the surveyed population was 44.43 years. Of the total sample, 65.9% were male, and the average cultivated area was 0.28 hectares. A binary logistic regression model was used to determine the factors that influence the use of pesticide. The results show that the experience of discomfort following pesticide application, the occurrence of accidents during pesticide use, and the perception of the dangerousness of pesticides to human health and the environment are variables that exert a significant and positive influence on pesticide use. Furthermore, a greater willingness to accept effective alternatives has been found to reduce the probability of using pesticides by 97.3%, with a statistically significant coefficient and a very low p-value (0.000). Moreover, each increase in annual income is associated with a reduction in the probability of not using chemical pesticides by 0.1%, with a statistically significant coefficient and a very low p-value (0.000). In the context of the search for rational use of pesticides, it is necessary to characterize the cropping systems in the urban and peri-urban market gardening sites of Bobo Dioulasso and Ouagadougou
Elucidating the Role of Micronutrient Seed Treatment in the Physiological Performance of Wheat Seed
Seed treatment is one of the key techniques for improvement in physiological performance of seed lot in different crop plants. In the present study, the aim was to explore the technique in wheat, seed lot was treated with the different concentration of iron and zinc sulphate solution. Other method of micronutrient application was also adopted i.e., soil application and foliar spray at recommended dose. The micronutrient treatment with ZnSO4 (0.5, 2.0%) exhibit highest improvement in physiological parameters like root length, shoot length, seedling dry weight, standard germination, germination energy, germination rate, seed vigour index-I & II, dehydrogenase enzyme activity, membrane permeability i.e., EC and zinc & iron content in seed and plant in treated seed and harvested seed lot, respectively. Commonly seed treatment with ZnSO4 (0.5%) results in improvement of all the physiological parameters of treated seed as well as harvested seed
Effect of Different Potting Media on Seeds Germination & Growth of Dahiman (Cordia macleodii Hook.) in Nursery
The study was conducted at the Herbal Garden, IGKV, Raipur (C.G.) from July to January during the 2023-24 session. The study aimed to evaluate the impact of various potting mixtures on the growth of Dahiman (Cordia macleodii) in a nursery setting. The experiment used a Complete Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications and nine different treatments. The treatments involved different combinations of potting mixtures: T1 (sand + soil + FYM, 1:1:1), T2 (soil + sand + vermicompost, 1:1:1), T3 (soil + vermicompost + FYM, 1:1:1), T4 (sand + soil + lemongrass compost, 1:1:1), T5 (sand + soil + FYM, 2:1:1), T6 (sand + soil + vermicompost, 1:1:1), T7 (sand + soil + vermicompost, 1:1:2), T8 (sand + soil + FYM, 1:1:2), and T9 (control). The T7 treatment (sand + soil + vermicompost, 1:1:2) stood out as the most effective, significantly improving all growth parameters for both Dahiman. These findings indicate that the T7 treatment (sand + soil + vermicompost, 1:1:2) is the best choice for promoting healthy growth in Dahiman seedlings
Impact of Integrated Nutrient Management on Growth and Yield Characteristics of Mustard (Brassica juncea L.)
The experiment was conducted at the Instructional Farm (SIF) of Chandra Shekhar Azad University of Agriculture and Technology in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh in the Rabi season of 2023-24. A Randomized Block Design was used for statistical analysis, with 10 treatments and 3 replications. The primary objectives of this study involved assessing the crop growth and yield attributes, in mustard crops subjected to different treatments. These treatments consisted of various chemical fertilizers, bio fertilizers, and nano fertilizers used in different combinations. Results revealed that, the effect of treatment T10 [Nano DAP @ 40ppm + RD of N&K (120:60) + Azotobacter @2 kg ha-1 + PSB @4 kg ha-1] was found to be best in terms of growth and yield attributes of crop, whereas minimum growth and yield attributes of crop was found under the effect of treatment T5 [Nano urea @ 60ppm + RD of P&K (60:60)]
Phytotoxic Effect and the Efficiency of Different Herbicides and Nitrogen Levels on Weed Control in Wheat Crop
A field experiment was carried out during the winter (rabi) season of 2018–19 at the Agricultural Research Farm, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, to evaluate the impact of herbicides and nitrogen levels on phytotoxic effect and the efficiency of different herbicides and nitrogen levels in wheat. The wheat field was infested with nine weed species such as Phalaris minor, Cynodon dactylon, Anagallis arvensis, Melilotus indicus, Chenopodium album, Vicia sativa, Medicago denticulata, Solanum nigrum, and Cyperus rotundus. Among these, Cyperus rotundus and Cynodon dactylon were the major weeds. Visual phytotoxicity indicated that phytotoxicity was observed under pinoxaden (40 ml ha-1) + 2, 4-DEE (750 ml ha-1). The data pertaining to available N, P2O5, K2O in soil after harvest of crop revealed that application of herbicides and nitrogen levels observed non-significant differences except higher available K2O in soil observed by application of pinoxaden 5.1%EC + 2,4- DEE 38%EC (40+750 ml ha-1) significantly over weedy check and statistically at par with rest of the treatments. Further, higher weed management index (WMI) was recorded under HW twice plot (30&60 DAS) was 0.13 followed by under application of sulfosulfuron (25 g ha-1) + 2, 4-DEE (750 ml ha-1) was 0.11. Weed density and biomass had strong negative correlation with grain yield (r = -0.39 and r = -0.40, respectively). The interaction effect of highest grain and straw yields were achieved with the application of Sulfosulfuron (25 g ha⁻¹) + 2,4-DEE (750 ml ha⁻¹) in combination with 180 kg N ha⁻¹
Effect of Different Altitudinal Zones on Growth Parameters of Garcinia indica (Choisy) in Uttara Kannada, Karnataka, India
This study examines the impact of altitudinal variation on the growth of Garcinia indica in Agro-climatic Zone-9 of Karnataka, specifically in the Uttara Kannada district of the Western Ghats. Eight experimental sites, categorized into four altitudinal zones (Plains, Up-ghat, Mid-ghat, and Coastal), were analyzed for tree height, girth, and crown diameter. Results show significant growth variations, with the Up-ghat zone having the highest mean tree height (10.73 m), the Coastal zone showing the largest girth (69.67 cm), and the Mid-ghat zone exhibiting the widest crown diameter (7.08 m). Four type of canopy found viz., Pyramidal, Full-crowned, Weeping and Spreading. These growth differences are influenced by environmental factors such as rainfall, humidity, and light availability, which are more favourable in higher altitude regions. The findings have practical implications for commercial Garcinia indica cultivation, indicating plains and up-ghat as optimal for higher productivity.
