Demographic influences on knowledge and attitudes of health insurance leaders on the role of registered dietitian nutritionist: Implications and future directions
This study examined health insurance leaders\u27 knowledge and attitudes regarding Registered Dietitian Nutritionists (RDNs) and their integration into healthcare delivery. An anonymous cross-sectional survey collected data from 65 insurance leaders representing national (70.8%) and regional (29.2%) providers, with 80% working for organizations covering over 800,000 members. The study achieved a 71.4% response rate through professional networks.
Kruskal-Wallis analysis revealed significant differences in policy knowledge across job roles (p=.026), with pairwise comparisons showing Food is Medicine professionals scored lower than reimbursement specialists. Gender significantly impacted overall survey scores (p=.031), attitudes toward RDNs (p=.038), and future framework perspectives (p=.002), with females demonstrating more positive attitudes than males in future frameworks (p=.027). Education level significantly influenced knowledge of RDN skills (p=.010), with advanced degrees correlating with greater understanding. Frequency analysis showed strong support for expanding RDN scope of practice (70.8% strongly agreeing) despite substantial knowledge gaps regarding health coach education (66.2% uncertainty). Mann-Whitney U tests confirmed no significant differences in knowledge or attitudes based on provider type (national vs. regional), membership size, or ethnicity (all p\u3e.05).
The results demonstrate widespread support for RDN integration despite notable knowledge gaps in policy understanding. Current coding structures present significant challenges, as time-based Medical Nutrition Therapy codes fail to reflect service complexity, and payer policies often restrict billable units regardless of patient needs. This disconnect between clinical complexity and reimbursement mechanisms creates barriers to effective RDN utilization. The findings suggest meaningful opportunities to enhance coding frameworks to better align with the complexity of RDN services, potentially improving both healthcare outcomes and cost-effectiveness in chronic disease management
Do recent experiences with whole numbers bias U.S. adults’ fraction number line estimates? The role of prior fraction knowledge, math anxiety, and math attitudes
Fraction understanding is crucial for success in math, but fractions tend to be difficult for people to understand. One source of difficulty in understanding fractions is whole number bias: the incorrect application of whole-number rules during fraction reasoning. However, people do not always make consistent whole number bias errors, which suggests that contextual and individual factors may influence people’s fraction reasoning. In the current study, we tested whether recent experiences with whole numbers, prior knowledge of fraction equivalence, and individual differences in math anxiety and math attitudes influenced whether adults make whole number bias errors during fraction number-line estimation. A sample of 244 adults estimated equivalent small- (e.g., 1/2) and large-component (e.g., 15/30) fractions on number lines. We randomly assigned adults to different priming conditions where they estimated whole numbers that were either proportionally equivalent to the target fraction (e.g., 15 on a 0-30 number line::15/30 on a 0-1 number line) or when they were not (e.g., 15 on a 0-21 line) and compared whole number bias between priming conditions and relative to a no-priming control group. As expected, we found that whole number bias errors were more prevalent in the non-proportional condition compared to the proportional and control conditions. We also found that whole number bias was more likely when people had higher math anxiety in the non-proportional prime condition, but equivalence knowledge and math attitudes were unrelated to whole number bias errors. Our results suggest that recent experiences can sometimes increase adults’ whole number bias errors
Design, fabrication, & laboratory testing of a strain gage instrumentation system for marine applications
A strain gage-based instrumentation system was designed and fabricated to measure the moment present at the base of a mock, diesel-engine snorkel for a submerged vehicle designed to operate in the surf zone. Afterwards, a lab experiment was designed and executed to determine the accuracy of the instrument and a 2-dimensional, matrix-vector equation was formulated to relate pairs of voltages, Vx and Vy, to moments, Mx and My for the experiment. Three versions of this model were built. The first model was created using traditional statics equations governing strain, stress, moment, force. The second and third models were built directly from linear regression methods applied to the input and output data from the laboratory experiments. The second, ”diagonal” model assumed no interdependence between sensors on the predicted moment while the third, ”full” model allowed for interdependence. Each of the three models was then used to estimate the moment at the base of the mock snorkel using voltage measurements from each experiment. The estimates were then compared to the true moment data from each experiment. The error statistics calculated from these estimates revealed significant estimation bias for the theoretical statics model which was not present in the diagonal and full models. The diagonal and full models both had zero mean error, low standard deviation of that error and were slightly negatively correlated. Furthermore, there was only a 7% improvement in the accuracy of the full model over the diagonal model which was interpreted as the sensors having little dependence on each other with respect to the estimated moment. The work done in this thesis will enable the prediction of moments present on the mock snorkel during tow tests through the marine environment when the mock snorkel is equipped with and without freely-rotating, segmented, fairings. If the fairings decrease the drag forces on the mock snorkel they could be implemented on the submerged vehicle that operates in the surf zone to reduce the chance of a catastrophic failure
