    Undergraduate students\u27 perceptions of philanthropy, importance of affinity-based giving and impact on student giving

    As technology continues to advance, and alumni donor numbers decline, fundraising professionals are exploring new ways to encourage alumni to give back to their alma mater and continue building a strong donor pipeline. With a myriad of economic and political factors contributing to increased and inflated costs for colleges and universities, and students alike, maintaining a steady pipeline of donors to ensure ongoing philanthropic support is important. As budgetary concerns and funding cuts continue to work their way into the higher education landscape, college and university annual giving departments are increasingly tasked with exploring student philanthropy programs (SPPs) on campus to help build their next generation of donors. The purpose of this study is to understand undergraduate students’ perceptions of philanthropy and motivating factors in inclination to give to help build and enhance SPPs across college and university campuses to generate a fresh pipeline of alumni donors for future generations. Data was collected using a mixed methodology including Qualtrics survey data from 235 respondents and 11 semi-structured interviews from undergraduate students at the University of North Florida. Data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, logistic regression and thematic analysis. Using an explanatory sequential approach, the quantitative data findings of membership or affinity being a significant variable in inclination to give was supported by qualitative data findings. The discussion includes findings, implications, limitations and recommendations for future research

    Fourier transformation of non-periodic functions and its application in computed tomography

    Fourier analysis plays an important role in signal processing and imaging applications, with computed tomography (CT) being a prominent example. CT imaging relies on recon- structing cross-sectional images of objects from multiple projections, a process deeply rooted in the mathematical framework of the Fourier series and its extensions. This thesis explores the mathematical principle behind CT, demonstrating how periodic and non-periodic func- tions can be decomposed into sinusoidal components to facilitate image reconstruction. We begin by reviewing the Fourier series and its ability to represent periodic signals, and then extend this concept to non-periodic functions through Fourier transforms. The connection between Fourier analysis and the Radon transform, a key mathematical tool in CT, is ex- amined to illustrate how projections of an object can be synthesized into a complete image. Additionally, we discuss reconstruction techniques such as the Fourier Slice Theorem and filtered back projection, which leverage Fourier-based methods to enhance image accuracy and resolution. By connecting Fourier series with computed tomography, this work high- lights the mathematical elegance and practical significance of frequency-domain analysis in medical imaging and beyond

    Listening to Wrong Beliefs: Being a Virtuous Agent in Contexts of Disparity

    Using the concept of intellectual humility (IH) described by Whitcomb et al. (2021) and their application of IH in contexts of disparity, I will be furthering the discussion of the importance of IH when engaging with the other side. Although there are intellectual harms associated with being too open-minded, and moral concerns about being a listener to harmful ideas, I argue that epistemic agents risk committing an intellectual error when they don’t try to understand the beliefs of the in-the-wrong party. Even in contexts of disparity, you should be able to understand the other party’s belief-forming methodologies, which is compatible with not trying to change your own beliefs. By using IH, the in-the-right-party should have none of the fears or concerns associated through interacting with problematic views of the other side

    The purpose of this piece is to explore species present in Florida by depicting native species alongside commonly seen non-native ones. I decided to focus on mammals, specifically those I have personally observed while living in North Florida. By illustrating their unadorned skeletal remains, I hope to inspire viewers to consider the similarities, differences, and relationships among these organisms, as well as the lives they lead on shared land. The species depicted in this piece are (clockwise from middle) Homo sapiens (human) - non-native; Tadarida brasiliensis (Mexican free-tailed bat); Dasypus novemcinctus (nine-banded armadillo); Sciurus niger shermani (Sherman’s fox squirrel); Odocoileus virginianus (white-tailed deer); Sus scrofa (wild boar) - non-native; Lontra canadensis (North American river otter); Trichechus manatus latirostris (Florida manatee); and Lynx rufus floridanus (Florida bobcat)

    Horseshoe Crabs

    Horseshoe crabs (Limulus polyphemus) are fascinating animals known as “living fossils.” Older than dinosaurs, horseshoe crabs are arthropods, closely related to spiders and scorpions. Many shorebirds, including red knot, depend on the eggs of horseshoe crabs during migration. Horseshoe crabs are captured and bled alive for their blue blood. Rich in limulus amebocyte lysate (LAL), their blood is used for the Limulus Amebocyte Lysate (LAL) test, which is used worldwide to detect bacterial toxins in pharmaceuticals and medical devices. Horseshoe crabs have an intricate anatomy, so I spent a lot of time researching it before I started drawing them. When I first started, I combed through photographs and illustrations, and I planned to rely on a damaged shell of a horseshoe crab I had since childhood. However, during a trip to St. Petersburg, the graduate student I was assisting, Ava Larson, introduced me to Bradley Furman, with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Bradley gave me molts of horseshoe crabs which I used as models for this illustration. I illustrated the dorsal (top) and ventral (bottom) views of the horseshoe crabs using the stippling method. I am a senior at the University of North Florida, majoring in biology and minoring in creative writing and public and professional writing. The scientific illustrations class by Dr. Amy Keagy changed my life profoundly. Before taking Dr. Keagy’s class, I wrote stories and made surrealist paintings to connect the public with nature and science but now, I am also a scientific illustrator. I’ve always loved the natural world and felt a great connection with it, so it’s wonderful to see other people influenced by art that tells the story of nature

    Notas preliminares Juntos hacemos el cambio por nuestros mares es una obra de teatro escrita colaborativamente por el curso IDS 1932 (FYE) Teatro para la salud, de la profesora Dr. Nuria Ibáñez y representada por la clase el 3 de noviembre de 2024 en Museum of Contemporary Art de Jacksonville, producida por las profesoras Dr. Maureen McCluskey y Dr. Nuria Ibáñez. La obra reflexiona sobre la relación entre nosotros los humanos y el océano, explorando profundamente cómo nuestras acciones afectan la salud de los ecosistemas marinos y, al mismo tiempo, nuestra propia salud. Al escribir la pieza buscábamos traducir las estadísticas en historias y articular el significado tanto de los números como de las conexiones humanas desde el aquí y ahora del scenario. A medida que trabajábamos juntos en la pieza, el grupo íbamos tomando conciencia de la importancia de la salud de nuestro medio ambiente y aprendimos que la salud también tiene que ver con conectarnos entre nosotros y con nuestro medio ambiente
