By virtue of the authority, rested in me by the board of public instruction, by jeff.Co. State of Fla.
S . D. Mcgill, a very promising young man of Sanford, but who prior 
to one year ago had lived in jacksonville for a considerable lenghth of time
while attending Edward waters college,from which he graduated in the normal 
department, has been a student of dummer  acadamy in sourth byfield mass....for 
the past year. In the declamatory content of that instistution, on the 23rd inst., 
McGill won the first prize, which was 25$ in gold. There were fourteen other 
speakers in the contest, and McGill was the only Southerner, and certainly the 
only colored boy either in the school or in the adience. This acadamy is a 
tributary to Harvard University. All the teachers are harward men and it is a settlwed 
tradition among the students to end up at harvard. McGill was loudly applauded when 
the judges awarded him the first prize, and he has proven that a Florida boy has 
brains. He will take the entrance exam for harvard next with promise of 
success. He is Well pleased, is getting on well and his friends will be glad to know of his triumph.
The name of William Pickens,  
the Negro Student at Yale who - 
some time ago in a Speaking con-  
test won the Ten Eyckprlze as best  
junior oration, has gone the country 
 over and he has been the recipient  
of many congratulations. It was  
an event which caused the race o 1 
 feel proud. But the thing that  
 makes every Floridian and especial 
ly the colored people feel doubly 
proud is the recent Victory of S. 
 McGill, a young man raised in SAN-foraged 
 was graduated from Ed 
ward Waters College just a year 
ago McGill entered the Dummer 
 Acadamy, South Byfield, Mass, last 
 fall and has since been regularly 
attending. In the annual speaking 
contest which came off there Fri-
 day night May 22nd, in a class of 
fifteen McGill won what is known 
as the Ambrose prize of $50.00. 
The fact that McGill is a colored 
man and the only in that school 
gives reason for great rejoicing 
among his many friends here. In 
the audience that he spoke to was 
not a Single colored person and he
 . 
the only in the class of 15.
Mr.S. McGill of sanford, Fla, a student at Dummer acadamy, won the Ambrose prize at that institution last friday evening. The prize was $25 in gold, and was sought after
by 15 students. mr. McGill was the last speaker, and was declared winner long before the Judges could decide. Mr. McGill is very popular at the acadamy, and plays on both 
football 
and basketball teams. He also has the lot of credit of  taking up more studies than any people and his averages are the highest. Mr. McGill is a frequent visitor and has many friends.
OPPOSED TO REMOVAL Some 
of the prominent colored men of this city 
are seeking aid 
of their white friends to prevent the removal of 
Jacksonville of the Edward Waters College, 
a colored institution. The prroposition is to 
consolidate this college with the Morris Brown 
College, in Atlanta, and if this is done the 
Jacksonville protestants assert that it will result 
in the extinction of Edward Waters College. The 
latter College is not in a good financial 
condition, but the pride of those interested 
therein seem to believe that it can be more 
than self-sustaining once it is permanently 
established here in a proper building. The Metropolis 
commends the efforts of Jacksonville men in their 
efforts to retain the college here, and to work for its 
advancement and best 
interests.
DECORATION DAY OBSERVED.
Charles Gabriel Post Held Grand 
Army Ceremony
 Charles dabriel Post, No. 6, Grand 
[Army of the Republic, with A. An- 
crum, commander, and P. Waggles, 
 adjutant, marched to Duval Cemetery 
 yesterday afternoon, followed by the 
 Woman's Relief Corps, No. 3, and the 
officers and members of the Lincoln 
Memorial Association, Miss Eartha M. 
M. White, president, where were gath- 
 ered a large number of citizens to 
take part in the observing of Decora- 
tion Day.
The ceremony over the graves of 
the soldiers who are buried in that 
cemetery was conducted by the Grand 
Army Post, while the spectators look- 
ed on and listened. The comrades of 
this post are growing fewer. A few 
years ago, when Decoration Day was 
observed, there were a goodly num- 
ber of the veterans in line, wearing 
their uniforms and badges.
It was noticeable yesterday at the 
ceremonies how fast the number of 
those men is fading away. A number 
of their comrades are buried in other 
cemeteries of the city. The post sees 
to it that the rites of the organization 
are performed at the graves of all. A 
miniature flag and flowers mark the 
graves of the soldiers.
The speaking and other exercises 
were held at a stand that had been
erected on the east side of the ceme- 
tery. There the people gathered. The 
choir occupied places on the stand 
with the officers of the post and the 
other organizations and the speakers. 
Miss White was obligingly assisted in 
directing the exercises by H. D. Canty 
and C. A. Menchan.
After singing “America” prayer  
was offered by the Rev. S. P. Pratt, 
after which introductory remarks 
were made by Mr. Menchan, Mr. Canty 
and Miss White.
The assemblage of people around 
the stand was large, and the most re- 
spectful attention was given to all 
that was said and done.
Attorney S. D. McGill was the prin­
cipal orator of the day. He was ap- 
propriately introduced by Mr. Canty, 
and the address which he delivered 
was a tribute that not only did him 
special credit as a young profes- 
sional man, but to the occasion as 
well. This address showed a care in 
its preparation that was only equalled 
by the force of its delivery. The 
speaker showed that fine analytical 
type of reasoning and that incisive- 
ness that is characteristic of the legal 
fraternity in all the oration which he 
delivered, and which so delighted and 
enlightened all who were there. All 
bitterness was absent from this ora- 
tion. which was on a plane that was 
too high for anything that might mar 
the sacredness of a day that has been 
set apart by the nature of things.
A full meed of glory was given to 
those who gave their lives for human 
rights and the boon that is the com- 
mon possession of every American cit- 
 izen. a saved Union, with all its at- 
 tendant benefits, were dwelt upon 
 with becoming emphasis.
 The speaker would not have his race 
 lose sight of the peculiar trend of the 
 times. The departure of men of great 
 ideas as to human rights was de- 
 plored. No less was it deplored that
paternalism has taken so great 
grasp on most things of the prese.

were given. The causes that led up 
to the war of the sixties were  given 
with a care and deliberation that com- 
manded attention and at the same 
time showed the ability of the speak 
er. The citizenship that came to men 
of his race by reason of the war. 
bringing with It a precariousness that 
lingers yet, a. citizenship nevertheless 
was treated from a legal standpoint, 
and the conclusion reached by the 
speaker was one that was beautifully 
free from chimerical dreams. Caution, 
tact, pluck, enterprise and push were 
put forth as prime essentials in the 
case of America’s black citizens, 
whose loyalty to law, order and faith- 
fulness to  righteous traditions are 
too well known.
This oration was in all respects ap- 
propriate, and Charles Gabriel Post 
and its auxiliaries could not have 
made a. better selection of a speaker 
for the occasion.
The applause that followed when 
Mr. McGill took his seat was from the 
grizzled veterans and all of the throng 
that graciously drank in what he so 
manfully said, and what was so much 
to the point as one of the salient fea- 
tures of the day's observance.
 An original poem was read by A. M. 
DeVaughn, which was also a fitting, 
tribute. The poem was one of the 
best Mr. DeVaughn has composed.
The exercises were varied by a solo 
sung by Sidney Woodward, who gave 
a medley of national airs that all en- 
joyed.
Father Harrison, who is 101 years 
old, and has been a preacher for sixty- 
two years, was presented to the au 
dience by Miss White, and he spoke 
briefly, and showed a wound he re- 
ceived in the war of the sixties.

MRS. CLARA WHITE
A wonderful pioneer social worker who did all the good she could in every way 
she could for all the people she could while she could and gave inspiration not 
only to her daughter but to many with whom she came in contact, and she though 
gone, lives on. The Northeast corner of Ocean and Forsyth Streets marks the 
site upon which the mother of Mrs. Clara White was sold from her into slavery; 
she never saw her mother again until she was grown and married. She was born 
on Amelia Island, Fernandina, Florida and died at the age of 76. She was a 
staunch Christian and one of the early Members of Bethel Baptist Church. She 
was loved by all who knew her.
