Growing competition in the construction industry has forced key players to focus on maintaining high quality and performance within their firms. An engineering consultant has a vital role in the construction market as he represents a client and facilitates the contractor during construction (Turner, 2003). This paper presents a case study of an engineering consultancy firm in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which is having a problem in maintaining the productivity rate of its computer-aided design (CAD) department whilst dealing with diversity issues within the organization as a whole. The research focused on identifying the causes of the problems through analysis of reports and interviews. Firstly, the policies and incentive mechanisms of the firm were reviewed. Secondly, a series of interviews were conducted with key players within the process, including the Market Sector Manager, Head of the CAD department, Design Engineer and CAD personnel. Thirdly, the productivity rate of the CAD department was calculated from the archived project reports. Through analysis, it was found that the main causes for the decrease in the productivity of CAD department were the improper development of teams due to cultural biases, lack of clear and precise instructions on tasks undertaken and the rigidity of functional structure of the organization

A framework for organizational justice can be used to understand how individuals within organizations respond to a variety of human resource practices and also can be used prescriptively in designing the procedures and enactment of such human resource practices. This study assesses the impact of organizational justice on job performance and job satisfaction of unskilled expatriate employees in the Arabian Gulf region. The paper investigates the impact of demographic variables such as nationality of workers and multicultural factors on organizational justice. Organizational justice measures developed by Niehoff and Moorman (1993) were utilized to test their impact on job performance and job satisfaction. The paper further explores various organizational models in order to identify the most suitable model for organizational justice in the region

Leadership Lessons for Contemporary Managers from Early Islamic Literature

    Get PDF
Islamic literature contains much evidence of the leadership skills of the Prophets of Allāh (pbut) through the ages. Varying situations, environments and cultures to which these Prophets were exposed seemingly parallel seamlessly with the adoption of the most appropriate techniques and styles of leadership needed by them in order to best manage the given situations they were presented with. Prophets such as Nūh, Yūsuf, Mūsa and Muhammad (pbut) thus demonstrated the importance of having the correct management and leadership trait in any situation. In contemporary society, demands on organizations are equally broad leading to the need for the adoption of leadership styles tailored to a similar breadth of situations. Thus, there is a need for researchers to examine various styles and techniques of leadership employed by the Prophets and look at possibilities of transfer of knowledge and skills into the modern world. This research focuses on the qualities required by leaders, how these qualities are articulated and dealt with in Islamic literature and the reasons why certain qualities have been endowed upon certain Prophets. The paper examines a variety of key leadership qualities evident from the Prophets as articulated in the Islamic tradition and draws lessons for leaders in contemporary society

The Work Ethic of the Early Islamic Period: Lessons for Contemporary Society

    Get PDF
The Arab world had a proud tradition of providing security to its working class especially during the early Islamic period. To be relevant in the future, however, developing Arab societies will need to re-examine their currently Euro-centric premise and strive to serve global equity through a more balanced philosophy, one that acknowledges their rich cultural heritage whilst simultaneously embracing the need for modernisation and advancement. Thus, the contemporary strategist in the Arab world needs to be inspired by the humanism of the early Islamic scholars, such as Abu Hamid Muhammad Al-Ghazzali (1058-1111). The principles for good governance (knowledge, justice, wisdom and tolerance) were articulated by Al-Ghazzali a millennium ago and remain valid today. Using Dubai as a model for change, this paper proposes a paradigm shift in work ethic inspired by early Muslim practitioners for creating sustainable and moderate Arab societies in the 21st century. It further demonstrates the ability of the growing regional knowledge economy to adapt economically and socially by implementing traditional ethical guidelines to achieve sustainable growth in addition to avoiding the exploitation of a largely foreign labour class
