The K-Economy, Gender and the Middle East

    Get PDF
Middle East economies generally lag behind global competitors partly because the vast resource of female talent remains untapped. This paper thus investigates the city of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as potentially a successful model for change in the region, in issues pertaining to women in education and the necessity for the full participation of women in the workforce and at managerial level in the developing K-economy. The research further indicates that in order for the region to succeed, it must utilise its entire human resource and encourage increased participation of Arab women in the workplace and their recruitment into senior management levels within organisations

This is the first comprehensive reference work devoted to philosophy in Britain. In addition to biographical entries on the lives and works of individual thinkers, it incorporates major historical surveys of the core philosophical topics, mini factual entries to facilitate reference, and detailed entries on themes, movements, institutions, journals, influences and theories through the ages. The Encyclopedia brings together 2,500 entries contributed by over 500 international experts. It is a unique resource for students and specialists to tap into the development and transmission of philosophical ideas over time, across disciplines, and to and from other countries. The Encyclopedia employs a broad construal of “philosophy” in line with historical usage, making it a source of continuities, connections and paths for future inquiry. It is a highly important database for teaching and research in philosophy, as well as in history, science, literature, religion, politics, psychology, sociology and economics

    Get PDF
Teaching engineering in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has involved numerous strategies which have been evolving over the past decades due to innovations in technology. In the recent past, the focus has not only been on promoting the mobility of Emirati students, but moreso on new and fashionable educational methodologies, e-learning and wireless networked laptop technology. The focus of this paper is in the examination of three related educational issues. Firstly, the development of strategies to facilitate the transition of students from passive to active learning. Secondly, the role of technology driven educational methodologies in promoting independent and group centered learning skills as opposed to their prior experience of highly dependent learning. Finally, the importance of outcomes evaluation and US accreditation as driving forces for increasing the mobility of UAE engineering students in a global market place as well as for the development of local industry
