    DOES THE HOST COUNTRY EXPERIENCE THE BRAIN DRAIN OR THE BRAIN GAIN BY ACCEPTING STUDY MIGRANTS?

    This study explores the effects of study migrants on the host country’s human capital formation under the possibilities of natives’ labour migration. Although it has been a controversial issue whether study migrants exert negative or non-negative effects on natives when receiving education, their effects on natives’ human capital formation have been overlooked in the previous studies that dealt with human capital formation under migration. This study fills this research gap. By assuming an overlapping generations’ economy, this study attempts to clarify whether the host country experiences the brain drain or the brain gain when study migrants have negative effects on the natives’ education. This study finds that natives’ human capital formation can be enhanced even if study migrants exert negative effects on natives’ education. Moreover, study migrants affect natives’ migration decision, causing the brain gain as well as the brain drain in a dynamic context, even in a situation in which study migrants do not remain in the host country after education. Furthermore, the host country may experience the brain drain when the government strengthens education quality regulation. These results suggest that it is not unreasonable for the host countries to accept study migrants even when they exert negative effects on natives’ education and that the government should not always strengthen the education quality regulation when accepting study migrants

    THE IMPACT OF THE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY INDUSTRY ON THE LABOR MARKET: THE CASE OF ROMANIA

    This paper aims to investigate the influence of the information technology (IT) industry on several economic aspects related to the labor market, with a special focus on the case of Romania. The IT industry is considered the star industry worldwide in very recent economic history amid intense digitalization of any sector. Romania has strongly felt this global IT status, especially in recent years when it became a magnet for IT solutions producers who have found here highly-qualified, cost-effective labor. Romania became one of the fastest-growing IT markets in Central and Eastern Europe, ranking high in the number of certified IT workers. Against this background, the increase of IT jobs has been exceeded by the demand for qualified human resources in the field. As such, the IT market is shaping up as a very competitive one. By selecting a sample of IT employees from the largest centers in the Romanian IT sector, the research included in this paper reveals the multiple impact of the IT industry on employees, their motivation, and their interests. The findings from the research form useful recommendations for policy-makers, to keep the country attractive for investors in the IT field, with proper measures to be taken especially in the fiscal and the educational system

    THE EFFECTS OF NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL AGING ON OPTICAL PROPERTIES OF LABORATORY PAPERS WITH TRITICALE PULP PRINTED USING THE UV INKJET TECHNIQUE

    The fundamental raw material in the paper industry is cellulose. Cellulose fibers are traditionally obtained from wood and are used to produce a wide range of paper substrates. The recent significant increase in the consumption of wood resources is causing a global need for alternative non-wood cellulose fibers in paper production. The straw of various cereals is often used as a source of virgin cellulose fibers. Laboratory paper substrates made of recycled paper and triticale straw pulp are used in this research. This study aimed to explore the effects of artificial and natural aging processes on the optical deterioration of digitally printed laboratory substrates with variable triticale pulp content in recycled wood pulp. The goal was to assess the optical stability of UV inkjet cyan, magenta, yellow, and black prints after two aging process treatments. The optical stability was measured by observing the reflectance in the visible spectrum. The durability of UV inkjet prints and their reproduction quality play an important role in ensuring the accuracy of text and images in graphic products. The greatest optical stability after aging for a long period of time was observed for black prints on all test substrates

    POPULATION FLUCTUATIONS OF VEGETABLE WHITEFLIES [BEMICIA TABACI (RISSO) (HEMIPTERA: ALEYRODIDAE)] IN TOMATOES GREENHOUSES IN SOUTHWEST MEDITERRENEAN REGION OF TURKEY

    Bemicia tabaci (Blanchard) (Diptera: Agromyzidae) is an important pest in tomato greenhouses in Ortaca, Mugla, Western Turkey. This study was carried out during the spring and autumn seasons of 2019 in five different tomato greenhouses, each 1,000 m2 in size. Population densities of adult B. tabaci in insecticide-treated and non-treated used when it is necessary, this will provide successful and integrated management against B. tabaci. Greenhouses were compared by using yellow sticky traps. Ten traps were placed in the non-treated greenhouse and ten traps in the insecticide-treated greenhouse. Yellow sticky traps were changed weekly and the number of flies counted in order to compare the two greenhouses. In addition to monitoring the whitefly population, in each greenhouse 100 plants were checked and the ratio of infested plants, the ratio of infested leaves per plant and the number of larvae per leaf were recorded weekly. The population density of the whitefly was almost the same in both insecticide-treated and non-treated greenhouses. Thus, it was concluded that using yellow sticky traps will be healthier and more cost effective than using pesticides. Furthermore using pesticides is risky for the environment and the use of yellow sticky traps can easily reduce the number of pesticide applications. If yellow sticky traps are used in the greenhouse in a completely isolated environment and the appropriate insecticide is used when it is necessary, this will provide successful and integrated management against B. tabaci

    DEVELOPMENT OF A PROTOCOL BASED ON MOLECULAR TECHNIQUES IN ORDER TO IDENTIFY NATIVE PREDATORS EATING THE BOX TREE MOTH CYDALIMA PERSPECTALIS, IN FRANCE

    The box tree moth, Cydalima perspectalis (Walker, 1859), is a species of moth from Asia, belonging to the family Crambidae, that invaded Europe in 2007. Its rapid expansion and negative effects on boxwood (Buxus sempervirens), in the field as in parks and gardens, make it an invasive exotic species. In order to control this pest, biological control methods based on the use of Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki are used nowadays, but this method is not specific enough and phenomena of resistance may appear. The search for alternative methods, such as the use of beneficial macro-organisms, is therefore essential. The objective of this study with the project SaveBuxus is to develop a protocol that allows to identify native predators which have eaten the box tree moth in situ, thanks to molecular analyses. In this context, collects of insects and spiders present in natural boxwood forest, in several sites with different environmental conditions, were carried out by beating method. The individuals collected were morphologically identified, and their digestive tracts were dissected. A molecular technique was then developed, starting with the molecular characterization of the pest for the barcode coI DNA fragment, as well as a wide variety of potential predators, in order to define strictly specific C. perspectalis primers for amplification. We then tested the presence of DNA of the box tree moth in the digestive tract of collected individuals. Our results demonstrate that several individuals belonging to three different species collected were tested positive for the pest’s DNA. The perspectives of this work are to perfect the method, and to continue surveys and collects in the field, to verify the natural adaptation of new predators to the box tree moth in situ. At the same time, this would allow us to consider a biological control based on the best identified predator

    CHEMICAL COMPOSITION AND ANTIOXIDANT PROPERTIES OF BLUEBERRY FRUITS AND JAM

    Blueberries have been hailed as excellent source of health-promoting and restoring bioactive compounds: vitamins, phenolic compounds, minerals and sugars. The blueberries could be eaten fresh and raw or processed into jams, syrups, smoothies, yoghurts, beverages or other products. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the content of phenolic compounds, antioxidant properties, water content, acidity, pH and sugar content of blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) fruits and jam. The antioxidant activities were evaluated using seven different antioxidant assays. It was observed that thermal processing of fruits led to statistical significant alterations for most of monitored parameters. The fresh fruits contains higher water content (86.903%) compared to jam (41.943%). Blueberry jam had higher content of total phenolics, total tannins and total flavonoids compared to fruits and manifested higher antioxidant capacity measured by ABTS (2,2′-azinobis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)), FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power), total reduction capacity and total antioxidant activity assays. The values of pH, acidity, total anthocyanins and DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical) assay showed not statistical significant alterations after thermal processing. Methanol extracts of fresh blueberry fruits and jam posses similar scavenging capacities for O2·- and ·NO free radicals. Hence, the obtained results demonstrated that, besides fresh blueberry fruits, the blueberry jams also possess noticeable amount of phenolic bioactive compounds with considerable antioxidant capacity

    ENCODING RESPECT AND DEFERENCE: ADDRESS FORMS AMONG FORMOSAN ABORIGINES

    This study investigates the forms of address of two Formosan aboriginal groups: Amis and Bunun. By conducting questionnaires and interviews with native informants, the study examines aboriginals’ choice of personal address in different contexts. The study’s results indicate that age, gender, and tribal status are influential factors in both groups’ choices of address forms. Notably, kinship terms are used to show deference and respect to other aboriginals, both within and beyond the tribe. The particular choices of address forms in the two groups also reveal the linguistic impact of foreign influences. The study also notes the ways in which they are similar to the addressing modes of other languages, such as Russian and Yoruba
