Urban vegetation is widely recognized for its capability to remove / reduce the pollutants in atmospheric air, either by deposition or by stomatal uptake. The main aim of the study was to identify certain species in Romanian flora enable to reduce the concentration of certain gaseous pollutants, and to test their bio-filtration/bioremediation potential related to the underground spaces with auto traffic. Thus, two plant species were tested for their potential in removing a model pollutant (e.g. toluene traces, as a common traffic exhaust pollutant) from the atmospheric air: Hedera helix (Araliaceae) and Chrysopogon gryllus (Poaceae). The selection process of plant species took into consideration the following criteria: well developed foliage, long vegetation period, resistance to hydric stress, shadow tolerance, and aesthetic aspect. The experiments were performed using a small-size airtight greenhouse as an air biofiltration system, having inserted 12 identical pots with selected species (6 with Hedera and 6 with Chrysopogon) and supplied with the model pollutant. A similar set-up in the absence of the model pollutant was considered for comparison purposes. Daily analysis of small air samples from the above mentioned system shows a decrease in pollutant concentration over the course of the test period, without any significant change in plant morphology. The preliminary results highlights the high potential of the investigated (combined) species in improving air quality in the underground spaces with auto traffic, by reducing a model contaminant concentration under experimental conditions. Still, further investigation is needed in order to quantify the individual plant performance towards this pollutant removal as well as their performance under extended gas mixture and the effect of other environmental variables on the efficiency of this process

    Get PDF
When one raises the question of economic progress and development of developing nations, it is necessary to examine the role performed by small-scale producers and entrepreneurs, especially in countries where women play a crucial role in the informal agricultural value chain as food farmers, processors, and traders. Literatures highlighted that women entrepreneurs and farmer across sub-Saharan Africa encounter significant barriers in accessing land, credit, equipment, and market. Lessening those challenges can help increase agricultural productivity and lead to economic development. In this context, cooperatives appear as a means through which women entrepreneurs meet their socio-economic needs by maximizing benefits, reducing costs, and sharing risks. Mainly marketing cooperatives can enhance their members livelihood in both rural and urban areas while contributing to their better access to market, credit, and decision-making stances in persistent gender unequal societies. Using data collected from 200 members of marketing cooperatives in urban and peri-urban Bamako, this article aims to understand the potential of marketing cooperatives in empowering women entrepreneurs in the agribusiness sector by providing evidence from women oral accounts. The results reveal that women’s involvement in cooperatives has some positive impacts on their access to productive resources, mainly market, credit, trainings, and information in the study areas

Counselling is an important area that belongs to the standard activities provided by universities. The counselling services provided cover several thematic areas. Usually, it is study, psychological, social, special-pedagogical and career counselling. These services primarily targeted to students helps not only them, but also help the teachers, employees, applicants and graduates. Problems are not avoided by anyone, and it is not possible to allow so that a person, even though having the skills and prerequisites for successful study, has to resign from studies because they did not find quality support at the right time. The aim of the paper is to acquaint with the partial results of the analysis of the demand for counselling services among students of all three levels of the selected public university in the Czech Republic, which also includes Counselling Centre. The results are focused specifically on the utilization rate of use or non-use of these counselling services, the reasons for their use or non-use by students, or other circumstances of the implementation of this activity. A questionnaire of our own design was used for data collection, which was distributed in electronic form. This survey was carried out as part of evaluation activities related to quality management processes at the university

    Get PDF
According to the European Commission announcement: Advancement of schools and skillful teaching, by a Resolution of the European Parliament on education in the digital age, Serbia has formulated The Strategy for Education Development that accentuates the need of establishing new teaching and learning methods in the ever mobile and digital world. Educational politics in Serbia is directed at promoting the key digital competencies required for the 21st century life. Development of modern digital technology opened up new opportunities for advancement in education which enables students to gain knowledge, required for future work and life, in a faster and more exceptional manner. Although it has already been recognized that education should undergo a more complex digital transformation, the transformation has occurred suddenly and abruptly due to pandemic COVID-19. We conducted research on students who had their first experience with online classes last year due to the pandemic. The research was carried out on College of Health Studies, Cuprija, Serbia, on final year students, a week after the end of the first semester. Our results suggest that students had positive experience and attitudes toward online learning, high levels of functional skills, and lower levels of strategic competencies (information evaluation, content creating, knowledge constructing, creativity). This paper further considers the results of the study and demonstrates the process of changing the nature of knowledge, and the change in education methods in the future

AMERICAN FICTION AS A SOURCE OF LEARNING AMERICAN ENGLISH

    Get PDF
Although the main communicative purpose of fiction is pleasure reading, it can provide a lot of useful information about a language in its written mode to those who are not native-speakers and understand the reasons for being exposed to authentic language. Being written for a diverse, wide-public audience, fiction can cover a variety of topics and provide learners with the use of grammar and vocabulary in real-life situations. In addition, it can be seen as intermediate in that it includes a conversational dialogue of fictional characters. This can enable non-native speakers to be exposed to spoken mode of a target language, yet restricted, as well as written mode. Although contemporary British English is heavily influenced by American English and some contrasts are disappearing, there are still some specific features that characterise American English. The article presents the results of the study, the purpose of which was to find out the extent to which American fiction can support language learning and to offer new insights into communicative language teaching

TRANSLATING ANGLOPHONE LITERATURE IN SOVIET LATVIA: ERNEST HEMINGWAY’S EXAMPLE

    Get PDF
Latvians were introduced to Ernest Hemingway’s literary work in the second half of the 1950s. These were the years of Latvia being under Soviet rule with all the consequences that that implied: Sovietisation, propaganda of Soviet ideology, powerful and extensive apparatus of Soviet censorship controlling and influencing all spheres of human activity. Both physical and intangible expressions of culture were controlled and monitored by the Soviet officials. Considered as one of the most efficient tools of Soviet propaganda, literature was on a special account. As a result, internal and external structures of original and translated texts underwent a thorough censoring process. The choice of foreign authors accepted for translation was dictated by the guidelines of the Communist party and dependent on a quite changeable socio-political course taken in the metropolis - Moscow. To be on a safe side and avoid ‘the red pencil of censorship’, Latvian translators used to consult Russian translations of foreign literature, especially in the first two decades of Soviet occupation (1940s - 1950s). The present study examines some tendencies in translation policy related to Anglophone literature in Soviet Latvia of the 1950s basing on the first Latvian publication of Ernest Hemingway’s novel A FAREWELL TO ARMS - the work which was chosen by the authorities to introduce the American writer to a Latvian reader. Being one of the first Hemingway’s works translated in Soviet Latvia it demonstrates a general mechanism of introducing a foreign author and their literary heritage to the Soviet reader. Using the comparativist approach the first Latvian publication of the work is contrastively examined and juxtaposed with later Latvian edition and with the text in the original language. Additionally to the internal structure of the text, external structures (text selection, interpretation, facts) are also studied as an indivisible part of the translation policy

ANTIFEEDING AND INSECTICIDE EFFECTS OF LEAF EXTRACTS FROM CESTRUM PARQUI (SOLANACEAE) ON LARVAE OF GONIPTERUS PLATENSIS (COLEOPTERA: CURCULIONIDAE)

    Get PDF
The eucalypt weevil, Gonipterus platensis Martelli (Coleoptera: Curculionidae), is a main defoliator beetle of these trees worldwide. In Chile, it occurs widely in eucalypt plantations, and there are areas where parasitoids have not adapted. The antifeeding and insecticide effect of Cestrum parqui L\u27Hérit (Solanaceae) aqueous leaf extracts on third instar larvae was evaluated at various concentrations (0.0, 0.6, 1.2, 2.4, and 4.8% w/v), that were applied in laboratory bioassays to fresh eucalypt leaves, with five replicates. The antifeeding effect was estimated by the foliar area consumed at 24 h. Mortality was determined daily for 11 d. For each concentration, mortality relative to the control and LC50 were determined. This extract had a high antifeeding effect at all concentrations, reaching 100% at 2.4 and 4.8% w/v. Mortality was directly related to concentration. The extract was effective as bioinsecticide, reaching 92% mortality at 4.8% w/v on day 11. The lowest LC50 was 0.87% w/v on day 7. These results indicate that this extract would constitute an efficient alternative in integrated management programs of the pest in eucalypt plantations
