    Get PDF
Since COVID-19 pandemic hit the world economy we observe diverse movements on the capital markets. After the global downturn in March 2020 the capital markets have shown quick recovery. Some sectors, e.g. technological stocks, have pushed to its historical height. What are the reasons and the consequences of these developments? Is the positive dynamic on the markets a result of expansionary monetary policy of the leading central banks? Or the capital markets are currently creating a next bubble formation similar to one in 2001-2002? Which impact has digital industries – the so called “winners of the pandemic” - on the development of the capital markets? This study aims to analyze the factors affecting the capital markets during pandemic and to compare the technological boom 2000-2002 with the current heights on the stock market

RESEARCH ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF FUNGICIDES MIXTURES IN CONTROL OF CEREAL DISEASES

    Get PDF
Romania is one of the most important European cereal producing countries. Foliar and ear diseases are a permanent risk factor for the quantity and quality of crops. In order to obtain increasing harvests, the control of diseases is implemented since spring by preventive and curative methods, one of the most efficient being the controlled and optimal use of fungicides. Fungicide resistance has been recognized as a factor affecting the control of cereal diseases. In order to reduce the risk of resistance developing in the target pathogens FRAC (Fungicide Resistance Action Committee) recommends the use of fungicide mixtures. In this context, this study presents research on the efficacy in combating wheat and barley diseases of two mixtures of fungicides (Prothioconazole 16% + Spiroxamine 30% and Trifloxystrobin 15% + Prothiconazole 17.5%) applied at different doses and phenophases of plants and phytopathogens. The experimental plots were placed in 2 different locations (Dâlga-Călărași - non-irrigated and Agigea-Constanța - irrigated), in randomized blocks, in 4 repetitions with a plot area of 30 m2. The mixture of Prothioconazole 16% + Spiroxamine 30% EC was applied at a dose of 0.8, 1.0 and 1.25 l/ha and the mixture of Trifloxystrobin 15% + Prothiconazole 17.5% SC was applied at a dose of 0.5, 0.75 and 1.0 l/ha. The two treatments were applied between BBCH 30-61 from the end of the twinning phenophase to the beginning of flowering, with an interval of 14 days between treatments. The assessments were made before the application of treatments at 15 and 30 days after application and focused on efficacy in control and selectivity to crop plants. The obtained results demonstrated a good efficacy of the two mixtures of fungicides in controlling cereal crops against the complex of foliar and ear diseases (Fusarium, Septoria, Puccinia, Rhynchosporium, Helminthosporium)

EFFECT OF APPLE POMACE POWDER ADDITION ON MILLIT FLOUR BASED BISCUITS QUALITY

    Get PDF
Apple pomace is the primary byproduct generated from the production of apple juice. This study investigates the effect of apple pomace powder (APP) on baking quality of millit flour based biscuits After preparing the biscuits were packaged in polypropylene bags and stored at room temperature for 14 days. During storage colour, water activity, moisture content measurements, sensory evaluation, total polyphenol content and FRAP value (antioxidant capacity) determination, therefore texture profile analysis were performed. By increasing the concentration of apple pomace, the hardness, adhesion, cohesion, polyphenol content and antioxidant capacity increased, while their brightness, moisture content, water activity and overall popularity decreased. Apple pomace flour addition also increased the sweet taste intensity of cookies suggesting that in bakery products APF evolve a flavor enhancer role. Based on the sensory and compositional attributes, it was concluded that good quality cookies can be prepared through using 5% apple pomace powder with millet flour. APP proved to be a promising alternative to increase dietary fiber content of millet flour based biscuits

    Get PDF
The contamination of agricultural soils by heavy metals has aroused considerable apprehension worldwide due to their toxicity and persistence. In this study, the contamination with cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), chromium (Cr) and Zinc (Zn) in agricultural soils from two regions of Larissa (first region: agricultural soils with application of sewage sludge, second region: agricultural soils near large motorways) was assessed by collecting soil samples as well as by using appropriate contamination indices. The soil sample with the highest metal contamination, was used in pot experiment. The purpose of the experiment was to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment with a mixure of 50% manure and 50% attapulgite at three different levels (0%, 3% and 4% mix of manure - attapulgite / Kg soil) to reduce the availability of the pollutants to Quinoa (Chenopodium) plants. The agricultural soil samples were analyzed for their physicochemical properties and for “pseudo-total’’ heavy metals content after their extraction with boiling Aqua Regia and by using the atomic absorption spectrophotometer. The level of soil pollution was assessed by using Contamination Factor (CF) and Pollution Load Index (PLI). According to the PLI results, the agricultural soils both of two study regions of Larisa, was strongly polluted. Particularly, the CF results revealed that the first study region was very high contaminated with Cr and the second study region was significant and very high contaminated with Ni and Cr, respectively. The results of the pot experiment indicated that, the addition of mixure of manure and attapulgite reduces the uptake of metal pollutants by plants, confirming the possibility of using this mixture in amendment treatments of metal-contaminated soils

Local food system links scattered issues including food safety and quality, carbon footprint, community development, and socially responsible purchasing and is considered as the key to solve these issues. In this paper, farm stands, farmers markets, and CSA are comprehensively studied as the most important entities in local food system. This paper provides an in depth review of CSA including its definition and history, types, mechanism, operations, benefits, as well as obstacles and challenges. The paper also reviews food system and food miles, then links local food system to the contribution to the community and environment. A deep understanding of individual social responsibility as the ultimate motivation of the movement of promotion and adoption of local food is presented. The consumption of local food and the operation of local food system reduce food miles. As a result, they reduce the carbon emissions associated with the production, distribution, and consumption of local food. This paper closely examines the reasons contributing to the success of local food system and lessons learned from various studies. Not only focusing on the United States, this paper shares experience from different counties including Japan, France, Hungary, Italy, Argentina, and Canada. It is undoubtable that local food system has so many benefits. However, it also experiences some issues with community development. It is also important to admit the fact that local transportation system associated with local food system may not always be as efficient as conventional systems. Other important issues include the production method, packaging considerations, and personal dietary choices. It is important to understand that local food system benefits the environment might be limited or under certain condition

SOCIAL IMPLICATIONS OF COVID-19 ON THE SHARING ECONOMY

    Get PDF
The late 2019 outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, among many consequences, has put a serious strain on many sectors of the economy, causing GDP in numerous countries to plummet. Among the different business fields which have suffered, is a fairly new one – the sharing economy. The sharing economy is different from traditional economies since it is less regulated; it’s based on a two-sided rating system which serves as a confidence-building mechanism between the customer and the service provider. Additionally, this kind of economy, in most cases, demands physical interaction between both parties. This interaction between individuals is the reason COVID-19 is still posing a major threat globally but at the same time it is crucial for the sharing economy to survive. This paper discusses the challenges to the sharing economy caused by COVID-19, and provides an in-depth look into the aspect of regulation versus the sharing economy’s non-traditional confidence-building mechanism - its ratings system. By analyzing the two most popular sharing economy representatives Airbnb (hospitality) and Uber (individual transportation), this paper gives evidence to how fragile the underlying business foundations of these successful companies are and also provides evidence for these unstable trust-based economy schemes
