FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT AND ITS IMPLEMENTATION INTO TEACHING SCIENCE, MATHEMATICS, AND INFORMATICS
The contribution informs about a new publication entitled “Formative Assessment and Its Implementation into Teaching Science, Mathematics, and Informatics” published by Wolters Kluwer in Slovakia in 2022. This publication is dedicated mainly to teachers working at all levels of education, teachers in training, pupils and students, and also their parents. It is available in common bookstores. The first part of the publication aims to explain the theory of formative assessment and its relationship to summative assessment. It deals with the strategies and tools of formative assessment focused on the development of conceptual understanding as well as meta-cognitive strategies. It provides the reader with an opportunity to learn how formative assessment is implemented in teaching and the types of digital platforms and tools that can make this process more efficient. The second part of the publication provides demonstrations of strategies and formative assessment tools (FACTs) for the selected Science subjects (Biology, Physics, Chemistry), Mathematics, and Informatics whose didactic efficiency has been verified in practice. The publication draws from respected scientific studies on formative assessment abroad and in Slovakia. The research team behind this publication has also gained valuable experience during formative assessment training courses, which they organised for primary and high school teachers. This team created and verified formative assessment tools in cooperation with teachers themselves and performed several research studies investigating the influence of formative assessment on the development of conceptual understanding and scientific skills
THE SOCIAL, LEGAL AND COMMUNICATION CHALLENGES OF BEING A TRANSGENDER PERSON
Most of the contemporary societies are organized on the basis of a binary gender concept, according to which each individual is rigidly gender-defined in the framework of the dichotomous division to male and female gender. A certain number of people do not identify themselves with the sex allotted to them at birth, a problem arising regarding their inner comprehension of gender, which does not correlate to the sex. Those people are called transgender people. Due to the fear of being stigmatized, and not complying with the generally accepted social and moral norms, these persons are uniformly put into one of the two socially determined genders – male and/or female gender. By this act they become socially, medically and legally “invisible bodies”. The right to sexual orientation and gender identity is a universal human right. Therefore, problems of transgender people should be dealt with from the point of protection of fundamental human rights. However, for transgender persons, persons of the “third gender”, adjustment of gender identity in the Republic of Serbia is a restrictive and conditioned right – it is conditioned by a medical treatment lasting for a year and the opinion of competent medical professionals – endocrinologists and psychologists. Moreover, they face discrimination in all the spheres of public life, including the language used when referring to them. The authors in the paper discuss the legal procedures of adjustment of gender identity and the consequences that preconditioning by the perennial medical treatments leads to. Such legislative causes the “vacuum” regarding the living and legal conditions, which results in these persons being “trapped in the wrong body”
A NEW CULTURAL AWARENESS IN DREAMWORKS’ SHREK
DreamWorks missions is to “tell stories about dreams and the journeys unconventional heroes take to make them come true” (the DreamWorks Animation LLC n.d.). In other words, it uses its authority and influence to offer its audience an unexpected experience, where beliefs and principles are moulded in order to adapt to the surrounding culture and values. Although there are voices that condemn certain film studios for employing a particular set of features within its narratives that emphasise the stereotypes mass media tried so hard to resolve, one may notice the emergence of movies or fairy tales that display a gradual change or shift from the previous pieces of animated films we have been accustomed to. The DreamWorks’ film Shrek, chosen as corpus for this study, intends to provide a different perspective, a caricature of the traditionally-animated films, all deftly masked by comical, fictional elements
POETICS OF THE UNSPOKEN: THE HUMAN CRISIS IN THE POETRY OF W. H. AUDEN, PHILIP LARKIN, ROBERT LOWELL, AND ALLEN GINSBERG
This paper delves into the spirit of the 20th century as seen through the lens of the most renowned English and American poets, W. H. Auden, Philip Larkin, Robert Lowell, and Allen Ginsberg. It delves into the poetics of the unspoken; the poetry that tackles the human psyche and the concerns of a generation that no other poet would so explicitly talk about. The aim is to shed light on the human crisis from different perspectives: empathy, religion, the self, and America. What all writers have in common, however, is their faith and hope for a better future in which these pillars will be revalued. The upshot from all the poets at hand is that the human crisis will be surpassed only if we are gentle and kind to others, empathize with their pain, restore our faith, be true to ourselves and think outside the wallet of the capitalist society
DYNAMICS OF BALTIC GERMAN CULTURAL HEGEMONY IN AUGUSTS DEGLAVS’ NOVEL “RIGA”
In the history of Latvia, alongside with other nations, Baltic German people also left their imprints. Over the centuries, Baltic Germans influenced local socio-economic life and cultural processes, cultural practices and values until the second half of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. Baltic Germans are an ethnic group of people that was formed from peoples who immigrated to Livonia and Latvians who became Germans, thus creating a peculiar phenomenon of local history with its own mentality and culture. The imprints they left are reflected in Latvian literature, which is an essential resource to find out more about the social and national history. One of such texts is the novel Rīga (‘Riga’) by the novelist Augusts Deglavs (1862–1922). It depicts the events of the second half of the 19th century, when Latvians, forced by economic needs, began to flow from the countryside to Riga, hoping for a better life. The overall picture of the novel is made up of Riga’s multicultural society, general socio-economic and urban processes, Latvians’ struggle for the Latvian language, equal to the German language, practice and strengthening the Latvian culture, therefore the novel can be called a chronicle of cultural history and cultural confrontation of the second half of the 19th century. One of the central lines in the novel is the development and formation of the Latvian nation in the conditions of double colonialism (Baltic German and Russian Imperial Rule). In the article the manifestations of the Baltic German hegemony and the relations related to Latvians, depicted in the novel, have been analysed. The research uses a context-oriented approach, applying interdisciplinary findings from sciences related to the humanities. The theoretical findings of New Historicism support the connection of literary work with the correlations of history and cultural social life
EMBODIMENT OF NAMES OF PLANTS IN GERMAN LANGUAGE
This paper deals with a concept of great significance in cognitive linguistics – embodiment. It is based on the notion that the mind is not abstract and independent from the body, but that it has a physical nature. It grows out of biological predispositions, as well as out of the physical and social experience of a person, this experience is reflected in his/her language. Specific examples of embodiment in commonly used word expressions follow the theoretical part of the work. The emphasis is put on its application in the field of special vocabulary, with a focus on the names of plants. The impact of embodiment is documented in selected German names of plants, pictures are included for reference
COMBINATION OF EXTENSIVE READING PROGRAMS AND OTHER LEARNING ACTIVITIES FOR JAPANESE EFL LEARNERS
Extensive reading (ER) has proven to be a promising approach to improving English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners’ language skills. However, it needs a longer duration for the students to improve in standardized tests, such as the TOEIC. In this paper, we would like to propose a few combinations of ER with other learning activities such as an overseas study program or a Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) course. Based on our experience and the analyses, we could also determine why the students’ improvements could not be measured in the past decades
EVALUATION OF DÜZCE URBAN FORESTS IN THE CONTEXT OF ECOLOGICAL SAFETY AND TREE-FOREST HEALTH
The concept of “ecological safety” evaluates the level of ecological risk, the amount of destruction of the ecosystem and the extent of the danger that ecological systems are facing. It reflects the degree of integrity and health of the ecosystem, and can also provide a guarantee for the sustainability of an ecological-economic system. When ecological safety is considered in terms of people; It defines the ecosystem that does not threaten human life, health and wellbeing, and aims to prevent ecosystems from being damaged. In this study, Düzce Urban forest, which is one of the functional green infrastructure elements of Düzce city, was evaluated within the framework of ecological safety, forest and tree health. Risk factors that reduce ecological safety in Düzce urban forest were determined within the scope of the study. Düzce urban forest which has ecological functions such as regulating city climate by controlling temperature, humidity and wind, providing noise control and improving air quality, protecting the plant and wildlife diversity, in recent years, it has been faced with the problems of vandalism, being a crime scene, environmental pollution, air-water-soil pollution, and the increase of invasive species. In Düzce, which is the 5th province with the highest air pollution rate in Europe, urban open and green spaces are scarce in quantity and in a fragmented structure. Therefore, urban forest and urban trees are very important to continue urban existence in a healthy way, both in terms of environmental health and human health. In line with the threats and problems identified within the scope of the study, the ecological safety of the urban forest and urban trees were evaluated and suggestions were made for the solution of the problems
DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION OF A WHEY AND GELATIN FILM FILLED WITH COPPER NANOPARTICLES SYNTHESIZED BY AN ECO-FRIENDLY METHOD
This paper aims to improve swelling properties by determining the optimal concentration of glycerin (Gly) in a nano-composite hydrogel based on whey and gelatin crosslinked with copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) obtained in-situ, by biosynthesis using ascorbic acid (AA) as a reducing agent. Swelling tests show that in the first few minutes, the swelling degree of the three samples with different Gly concentrations do not show significant differences, but throughout the swelling process, the sample with the lowest plasticizer concentration has shown better swelling capacity. All hydrogel samples kept their integrity after 24 hours with negligible mass dissolution in the swelling medium. Therefore, it’s a quality that can be useful for food packaging systems. Fourier Transformed Infra-Red (FT-IR) and UV-Visible spectra confirmed changes in the polymer structure of the hydrogel samples due to the compound blending and crosslinking process. The results of this and the author’s previous work encourage us to study and develop new hydrogel systems based on whey and gelatin crosslinked with metal nanoparticles as active packaging for the food industry
CORROSION IN THE METALLIC SHELL OF HOT STOVES
This study proposes to verify and clarify the main corrosion mechanisms in industrial regenerators or hot stoves, widely used in the steel industry, indicating actions for its monitoring and control. The corrosion mechanisms in the upper parts, internally, are associated with the formation of siderite (FeCO3) and sulfur, which also favors stress corrosion and occurrence of cracks. Different corrosion mechanisms may be associated in the lower parts of the regenerators and may be accelerated by the presence of flue gas condensate and sulfur. Practical actions were proposed for the correct measurement and control of good operating conditions of the regenerators
