    MODIFIED WATERSHED APPROACH FOR SEGMENTATION OF COMPLEX OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHIC IMAGES

    Watershed segmentation method has been used in various applications. But many a times, due to its over-segmentation attributes, it underperforms in several tasks where noise is a dominant source. In this study, Optical Coherence Tomography images have been acquired, and segmentation has been performed to analyse the different regions of fluid filled sacs in a lemon. A modified watershed algorithm has been proposed which gives promising results for segmentation of internal lemon structures

    A SIMPLE AND PRECISE METHOD TO SIMULTANEOUSLY DETERMINE THE STRUCTURAL PARAMETERS OF NANOFIBROUS MATERIALS

    It is necessary to precisely determine the structural parameters (i.e., porosity, thickness and fiber diameter) of nanofibrous materials. However, the currently used direct methods are either complicated or inaccurate. One of the indirect methods, inverse characterization, is the alternative to obtaining the structural parameters. The inverse characterization based on the airflow penetration behavior of nanofibrous materials is implemented in this work. The Kozeny-type and Ergun-type equations are selected as the models involved in the inverse characterization. An open-source MATLAB-based app is used to carry out the inverse characterization. The results show that the Kozeny-type equation is feasible for nanofibrous materials, and the results are more accurate compared with the values obtained with the help of the Ergun-type equation. The findings indicate that the airflow method is suitable for nanofibrous materials

    OFF-LINE CONTAMINANT MONITORING SENSOR ASSESSMENT FOR USED OIL ANALYSIS

    It has long been known that the presence of solid contaminants in lubricating oil, whether in a form of wear particles or ingested from the environment are inevitable. The main approach of “before failure” diagnosis or prognosis of the oil-lubricated machinery is to detect lubricant degradation in situ the oil circulating system i.e., additive depletion, physical & chemical oil properties, degradation and solid wear particle generation or dirt ingression. In this particular paper, a solid debris monitoring sensor for used oil monitoring is assessed. The sensor working principal is to measure for the variation of the electrical capacitive responses caused by moisture and solid particles namely dirt and wear particles. The quantitative assessment of this specific sensor is statistically quantified through the utilization of full factorial design of experiments (DOE). The main and interaction effect of moisture, dirt and wear particles on the electrical field response is statistically assessed

    IDENTIFICATION AND EXAMINATION OF SOME PROBIOTIC PROPERTIES OF A STRAIN FROM THE GENUS LACTOBACILLUS, ISOLATED FROM SPONTANEOUSLY FERMENTED YOGURT

    The intake of probiotic microorganisms helps to restore and maintain the balance of the gastrointestinal microflora, which has a beneficial effect on the overall health of the individual. In order to be included in the composition of probiotic preparations or as starter cultures in the production of functional probiotic foods or beverages, newly isolated Lactobacillus strains must be identified and a number of probiotic properties must be demonstrated. Lactobacillus Pr2 isolated from spontaneously fermented yogurt was identified by physiological and biochemical (API 50 CHL) and molecular genetic (ARDRA-analysis and sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene) as a representative of the species Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus. The presence of some probiotic properties of Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus Pr2: resistance under model conditions of the gastrointestinal tract, antibiotic resistance profile, antimicrobial activity against pathogenic microorganisms and freeze-drying survival were examined. It was found that Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus Pr2 was highly sensitive to the effects of low pH values and the presence of enzymes (pepsin, pancreatin), to medium to high concentrations of bile salts in the medium (up to 1%), as well as to most of the antibiotics included in the study. However, the strain demonstrated high antimicrobial activity against pathogenic microorganisms and very good survival during the freeze- drying process. Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp. bulgaricus Pr2 may be included in the composition of probiotics or as a starter culture for probiotic foods or beverages, but before that it is necessary to conduct additional research on the presence of other probiotic properties of the strain

    ENVIRONMENT EFFECT IN BREAD WHEAT (TRITICUM AESTIVUM L.) ON YIELD AND QUALITY PARAMETERS UNDER RAINFED CONDITIONS

    The experiment was carried out to assess the environmental effect on the yield of bread wheat cultivars under rainfed conditions. A total of five bread wheat cultivars were tested across seven environments during the 2010-2011 and 2016-2017 growing cycle in Edirne location in the Trakia region, Turkey. Each year was considered as a single environment. The experiment was conducted in a randomized complete blocks design (RCBD) with four replications. Grain yield, days of heading, plant height, 1000-kernel weight, test weight, protein ratio, wet gluten content, gluten index and sedimentation value were investigated. The results of variance analysis revealed significant differences (p<0.01) among cultivars, environments and environments × cultivars interaction for yield. The lowest grain yield was 4454 kg ha-1 in 2015-2016 cycles in E6, and the highest was 8158 kg ha-1 in 2013-2014 growing cycle in environment E4. The highest grain yield was performed by cultivar Gelibolu (7234 kg ha-1) and the lowest by Aldane (6485 kg ha-1). Environment influenced the characters studied and very significant variation was found between environments. According to the environmental effect, the highest protein ratio, wet gluten content and sedimentation value were determined in environment E1. The highest 1000-kernel weight was determined in E4 and the test weight was in E2. While the Selimiye variety was the most stable in terms of yield, 1000-kernel weight and sedimentation value, the Pehlivan variety was the most stable in terms of test weight. The existence of different interactions between cultivars and environments showed the importance of genotype-environment interaction in breeding studies. The result of the study showed that for an effective selection of genotypes in breeding studies, studies should be carried out under different environmental conditions

    CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS WITHIN IN VITRO PROPAGATION OF SWEET POTATO (IPOMOEA BATATAS L.)

    The purpose of this study was to find viable solutions for problems encountered during in vitro cultivation of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.). Plant tissue culture are especially suitable for obtaining and maintaining a stock of pathogen-free plants, which can then be multiplied and used as an initial material. Although tissue cultures, carried out under controlled conditions, in a sterile environment, have important applications in plant biotechnologies, however, there are many factors that can influence their success. In addition to the minimum equipment of a plant tissue culture laboratory good function (adequate spaces, equipment, chemicals, laboratory glassware and tools etc.) and trained workers, the success of such an activity also depends on finding the best conditions for the harmonious growth and development of plant organisms, in a controlled environment. These challenges relate in particular to: introducing in vitro conditions of biological material from the in vivo environment; sterilization of the material which will be used as a source of explants; choosing a suitable growth medium, microbial contamination control; establishing optimal parameters in terms of temperature and photoperiod etc. The factors mentioned above vary by species and, more than that, by variety.     EVALUATION OF FLOWERING TIME AND SOME REPRODUCTIVE TRAITS OF ROMANIAN WALNUT GENOTYPES

    The aim of this paper was to evaluated of some autochthonous walnut genotypes in the Romanian North Eastern area conditions. Studies were done in 2016-2018, having as research material that four walnut genotypes (‘Miroslava’, ‘Anica’, ‘Velnița’ and ‘Ovidiu’) which were in the VIIIth year after planting grafted on Juglans regia L. as rootstock. The climate conditions, bloom for both male and female flowers period, late frost resistance, the tree vigor through trunk cross-section area (cm2), tree height (cm) and number of the young shoots were analyzed. Regarding the dichogamy, conducted research showed that ‘Miroslava’ and ‘Velnița’ are protogynous genotypes. The beginning of flowering in female flowers was depending on the climatic conditions in the study period 2-3 days before the male flowers. ‘Anica’ and ‘Ovidiu’ are protandrous genotypes, the male flowers starting to bloom on average three days before the female flowers. The weakest vigor of the tree showed ‘Ovidiu’ (30.2 cm2 TSA) and ‘Miroslava’ (42.6 cm2 TSA), but as the length of the young shoots, the highest values were registered at ‘Velnița’ (96.2 cm) genotypes

    OCCURRENCE OF SELECTED CHEMICAL ELEMENTS IN MILK AND DAIRY PRODUCTS FROM RETAIL CHAINS IN SLOVAKIA

    This work provides new data on the levels of some essential elements and toxic elements, important for their nutritional and/or toxicological properties, in some Slovak dairy products to evaluate the contribution of this food group to the quality of the Slovak diet. The aim of this study was to determine the concentrations of essential elements (Ca, Mg, Na, K, Zn, Mo) and toxic elements (Al, Ag, Li, Sb, Sr, Ba) in milk and dairy products available on the markets of Slovakia from two producers. From the essential elements the highest concentrations were recorded for Ca and K in the category of cheeses and milk. Significantly high level of Na was found in the cheese category. Of the toxic elements, in the case of Al, the highest permissible limit set by Slovak legislation was found to be exceeded in almost all dairy products. Numerous correlations between concentrations of elements in milk and dairy products were observed
