COMPETITIVENESS IN THE CONTEXT OF HUMAN POTENTIAL IN THE SLOVAK REPUBLIC
In developed economies, innovation is the main means of achieving the competitiveness of companies and countries. The achievement of economic growth and development is linked to radical innovations that change established patterns of behaviour, have an impact on job creation and the development of regions and countries. The European Innovation Scoreboard provides a comparative assessment of research and innovation performance in EU countries. It assesses the relative strengths and weaknesses of national innovation systems and helps countries identify areas they need to address. The Slovak Republic has long been one of the EU countries that lags behind the EU average in terms of innovation performance and belongs to the group of moderate innovators whose performance is 10 % to 50 % below the EU average. The aim of the paper is to analyse the innovation performance of Slovakia and its regions in comparison with the EU average in the selected period, to specify the strengths and weaknesses of Slovakia\u27s innovation performance and their dynamics in the period under review
ON COMPATIBILITY OF STUDY MIGRANTS’ ACCEPTANCE POLICIES AND IMMIGRATION POLICIES
Some countries accept study migrants to increase domestic skilled human capital. They induce study migrants to remain as skilled workers after education. At the same time, due to the shortage of unskilled labour, they tend to deregulate immigration policies and admit non-natives to take skilled and unskilled jobs. This study investigates the effectiveness of study migrants’ acceptance policies under different immigration policies. In particular, this study examines how study migrants’ human capital formation is affected by immigration policies. This study shows that total employed skilled human capital built by study migrants decreases as immigration policies are deregulated. This is because deregulation can lower the incentive of study migrants to produce skilled human capital. Therefore, deregulated immigration policies are not necessarily compatible with study migrants’ acceptance policies. This study further shows that by giving study migrants with a low innate ability pecuniary benefits such as a discounted tuition fee or a scholarship, host countries can alleviate the harmful effects of incompatibility. Our results suggest that governments should conduct immigration policies, taking its possible negative effects on study migrants’ acceptance policies into account, and that they can partly reduce such effects by implementing additional policies
NEW SOLUTION FOR HUMAN ANATOMY REMOTE TEACHING TO MEDICAL STUDENTS: AN IMPLEMENTATION OF A DEMO CLASS IN STUDY COURSE
In searching for new and fast solutions in response to the Covid-19 period, medical tutors transformed a lot of methods and materials into online formats and digital platforms. A special solution for Human Anatomy remote teaching was found in the organization of practical classes for all groups of students at the same time. Weekly “live” and all semesters demonstrations or Demo classes were started in the study course from 2020. The present study aimed to extract and summarize tutors’ general experience in the implementation of a Demo class in the Human Anatomy course. In the academic years 2020-2022, Zoom and Panopto platforms allowed the tutors to teach Demo classes remotely for the 1st year and the 2nd year students of the Faculty of Medicine. Over 2.5 years, there were organized 252 online anatomical Demo classes. Every Demo class (two academic hours in length) was related to the special anatomical topics and their contents. The data of this study were collected using open-ended questions to find out tutors’ experiences with the implementation of a Demo class in the study course. The answers were coded and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Before every demonstration, most of the tutors studied, how to organize and deliver a class. During online sessions all students received information at the same time and could follow the tutors’ explanations of the topic step by step. At the end of each Demo class, tutors liked to get any feedback from students about the presented content and displayed several questions and answers in the “live” chat. All Demo classes were recorded by tutors and afterward reviewed, optimized, linked, uploaded onto e-studies and accessible to students or other tutors of the study course. This experience gives further development and next transformation of teaching methods in the study course with implemented Demo class
PERCEPTION OF APPLIED ECOLOGY BY UNIVERSITY STUDENTS
Applied ecology concentrates on the ecosystems and their manageability. It is also connected to environmental awareness as judgement of the results of deterioration of the environment. For this reason, it is important to make research on students at different levels, especially young adults – university students. The study concentrates on the Košice Region, in the eastern part of Slovakia. Using Google Forms a questionnaire was delivered to 558 secondary school students from the mentioned region. From the participants 74.9% were female and 25.1% were male students. The most numerous age category was 18-21, the least one was 28 and above. 39.4% were students of medical or pharmaceutical focus, 24.7% were students of technical focus, 16.5 % were students of natural sciences focus, 14.0% were students of humanities focus, 4,7 % were students of economic focus and only 0.7% were students of art focus. All the students are interested in the quality of the environment regardless of the focus of their study. Most students are aware of the state of the environment and consider the quality of the environment in the place of their residence average, good or high. Most students use energy- efficient appliances only a small percentage not, regardless of the focus of their study. About a half of the students are satisfied and a half are dissatisfied with the activities of the local authority in the field of the environment, regardless of the focus of their study. The same applies for the voluntary activities to improve the environment in the place of residence. Most students are aware of the impacts of climate change on the environment
EDUCATION AND TEACHING REFORM OF BILINGUAL COURSES IN MAJOR OF BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT OF HIGHER EDUCATION IN THE NEW ERA
Teaching and education reform have been topics for researchers, teachers, and practitioners for decades. One of the most important impacts of higher education reform is to meet needs of the promising future. The modern world is influenced by technologies, and so is higher education reform. Online- offline platform with corresponding teaching methods improves both teacher and student satisfaction and promote their teaching and learning motivations. Bilingual courses, as means of meeting the trend of globalization, are benefited from the technologies in the reform. This study takes the bilingual course “International Marketing” in School of Management of Guizhou University in China as an example, reveals a framework of online-offline teaching within the technological platform, and contributes suggestions on effective online-offline teaching with the technological platform
DOMINANT VALUE ORIENTATIONS AND HEALTHCARE IN BULGARIA DURING COVID-19
The study aims to reveal the impact of leadership styles in the field of health care during COVID-19 crisis on organizational culture. The study was conducted among 376 people between February and March 2021 during the first wave of COVID-19 crisis. They were grouped into different demographic categories such as gender, age, education, position in the hierarchy, work experience, place of residence. Cameron and Quinn\u27s method for the types of organizational culture: clan, adhocratic, market and hierarchical and the method of B. Bass and B. Avolio "Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire" have been applied. They describe the transformative (charismatic) leadership style, the Transactional leadership style and the Avoiding (liberal) leadership style. The methodologies have been standardized for Bulgarian conditions by S. Karabeliova (Karabeliova, S., 2011). The data have been processed via SPSS - 21 and correlation and regression analyses have been applied for the purpose of the study. It is based on the assumption that if the sources of influence of the leadership styles on the organizational culture are known, the activity of the organization could be optimized, and the results of their team work could be maximized. The data show that the leadership styles, based on inspirational motivation, individualized attention and liberal management, has the strongest influence
ROLE-BASED LEARNING: THE DEVELOPMENT OF STUDENTS’ DIGITAL LITERACY IN ESP COURSES
Due to the increasing number of higher education study programmes in English and the tendency to incorporate English for Specific Purposes (henceforth, ESP) training into the content courses, there is a need to diversify the learning outcomes of the ESP courses to shift the focus on developing more interdisciplinary competencies. Thus, securing the pertinence of ESP and EAP courses in higher education study programmes. The current study proposes using ESP courses as a platform for developing digital literacy and performs an empirical study to examine the efficiency of integrating a role-based approach to develop students’ digital capabilities in the ESP courses. In addition, it tests the compliance of the Jisc digital capabilities framework with the Business students’ academic and professional needs. Two groups of 32 first-year university students studying Business English were observed for one semester. The data was extracted from the pilot lesson observations, student self- assessment surveys and end-of-semester interviews. The findings show that the inclusion of digital capabilities training does not compromise the acquisition of language-oriented traditional ESP goals. The tasks derived from the digital capabilities framework that the majority of the students rated as meeting their academic and professional needs were the creation of data visualisations, references, surveys, digital textual content, basics of graphic design; the use of collaborative work tools, and the moderation of online accounts for business branding purposes. Finally, the introduction of roles in the project-based learning increased students\u27 sense of accountability and reinforced the metacognition during the learning process; the role distinction also revealed that in group work students struggle the most with professional interpersonal communication tasks, such as providing feedback, forming structural criticism, moderating meetings and assigning tasks to peers
DETERMINATION OF FOREST ENGINEER CANDIDATES’ FOREST FIRE RISK PERCEPTION WITH THE FRAME OF DISASTER MANAGEMENT: AN EXAMPLE OF DÜZCE UNIVERSITY FOREST ENGINEERING STUDENTS
Disaster risk management is a process in which necessary strategies are implemented to reduce the probability of disaster and the negative effects of hazards. In order for risk management studies to be successful for natural disasters such as forest fires, floods and earthquakes, it is necessary to determine how people perceive risks. Forest engineers are required to respond quickly and effectively in forest fire disasters. After the disaster, it is important to determine the risk perceptions of forest engineers who are in charge of planning, orientation, coordination and support activities. The aim of this study is to determine the forest fire risk perceptions of Düzce University Forest Engineering Department students and to evaluate them within the framework of disaster management. Within the scope of the study, an online questionnaire was applied to a total of 100 forest engineering students. The findings were analyzed with the SPSS 22.0 quantitative data statistics program. In the evaluation of the data, number, percentage, mean and standard deviation values were calculated. In the first part of the questionnaire, there are questions about the class of the students, gender, whether they live in rural or urban areas, and whether they have experienced forest fire disasters. In the second part of the questionnaire, propositions consisting of 31 items and 3 sub-factors for forest fire awareness were presented. In the range of (1) strongly disagree- (5) strongly agree, it was discussed under 3 sub-headings as consciousness before forest fire, false disaster awareness and consciousness after forest fire on a 5- point Likert scale. As a result of the study; It has been determined that forest engineer candidates generally have high consciousness perceptions before forest fire, and moderate perceptions of post- forest fire consciousness and false disaster awareness
USING NORMALIZED DIFFERENCE INDEXES TO DETERMINE EROSION-PRONE AREAS: THE CASE OF THE BĂLȚATA RIVER BASIN (REPUBLIC OF MOLDOVA)
The analysis presented in the article determines erosion-prone areas, using remotely sensed data and ancillary information. Bălțata River Basin, selected as a case study, is exposed to quite a significant extension of erosion due to natural drivers and human pressure. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index and Normalized Difference Water Index are computed to assess the severity of dangerous surface processes and to determine erosion-prone areas. Ancillary information, such as gully and landslide layers, slope angles, soil types, and land-use types are used as factors of land degradation control. They are also used in the assessment of land degradation distribution within the basin. Our findings show that 1413 ha (8.4% of the basin’s area) are exposed to dangerous exogenous processes. About 70% of eroded and highly exposed areas are located on croplands, while the other 26% are confined to forests because of land consolidation measures. For diminishing the land degradation risk, we recommend the lands highly exposed to erosion be converted to other land-use types less likely to degrade
MAGNETOABSORPTION OF D- CENTERS IN QUANTUM WELLS AND ELECTRON- PLASMON RESONANCE
This paper presents the calculation of far-infrared magneto-absorption spectra of D- centres, consisting of neutral shallow donors that bind on additional electron in quantum well. The calculation is carried out under the conditions of electron-plasmon resonance when the distance between Landau levels is equal to the energy quantum of magnetic plasma oscillations. Throughout the process, resonant interaction of two-dimensional D- centre with magnetic plasma is taken into consideration. It is shown that the relative height of the absorption peaks is dependent upon the resonance frequency detuning. It is also found that the theoretical absorption spectra, calculated with account of resonant electron- plasmon coupling, coincide with experimental data obtained in GaAs-Ga0.75Al0.25As multiple quanta well (MQW) structures
