    No full text
This study is a bachelor's degree project in Information Design with a focus on spatial design. The purpose of this study is to investigate how spatial visual elements interact to support the visitor's orientation and understanding of a chronological sequence of events in an exhibition environment, even when the content is not experienced in a chronological order. Although chronological narrative is well established in exhibition environments, there is limited knowledge about how physical, visual and informative elements affect visitor's understanding of temporal content.  Using the exhibition Fossils and Evolution at the Swedish Museum of Natural History as a starting point, the study focuses on investigating how spatial and visual elements support the visitor's orientation and perception of temporal progression.   The results from conducted methods such as observations, site analysis and interviews, show that the lack of visual clues guiding information complicates the visitor's understanding of the narrative structure of the exhibition. Based on these insights, combined with previous research and relevant theories, a design proposal has been developed. The proposal is based on theories of visual perception, spatial legibility and wayfinding, with the aim of strengthening the spatial interaction and clarifying the temporal progression.   The study thus highlights the need for a more integrated interaction between physical, visual and informative elements. This is to create a comprehensible and orientable experience of the temporal sequence of events, regardless of whether the visitor follows a predetermined order or moves freely through the exhibition

    No full text
Background: Heart failure is a distressing condition that affects the physical, psychological, and social quality of life of patients. The illness is also burdensome for family members who are often involved in caring for their loved one. To meet patients’ needs, healthcare professionals require a deeper understanding of their experiences of living with the disease. Nurses play a crucial role in promoting patient participation, self-care ability, and quality of life through individualized information and a holistic approach

IT’S SIMPLY COMPLICATED! : Subsidiary Managers’ Activities and Performance after Gaining an R&D Mandate: A Modular Microfoundations Perspective

    No full text
Despite extensive research on subsidiary roles and mandates, the mechanisms through which subsidiary managers translate structural changes, such as gaining R&D mandates, into performance outcomes remain unclear. This dissertation addresses this shortcoming by developing a modular microfoundations framework that conceptually integrates the MNE-, subsidiary-, and subsidiary manager levels to explain how antecedents, mechanisms, and outcomes unfold across levels. Empirically, the dissertation comprises four papers focused on the subsidiary and subsidiary manager levels, examining 98 global subsidiaries of eight Swedish engineering multinational enterprises (MNEs). It analyses how managers’ activities, managerial aptness, and subsidiaries’ relational embeddedness shape subsidiary performance across three dimensions: strategic, innovation, and financial, following the gaining of an R&D mandate. The findings reveal that subsidiaries are not passive recipients of R&D mandates. When headquarters grants such mandates, it simultaneously transfers control over the use and development of knowledge resources to the subsidiary. This shift positions subsidiary managers as central actors whose activities embed resources within internal and external networks. Through these behavioural mechanisms, subsidiaries enhance their capacity to innovate, strengthen their strategic influence vis-à-vis headquarters, and improve their positioning within the MNE’s global value chain. The results further show that innovation performance does not automatically improve after an R&D mandate gain. The value of new resources and responsibilities attached to the R&D mandate depends on how subsidiary managers direct their activities and manage relational embeddedness. Internal activities towards headquarters and sister units may constrain innovation, whereas external activities encourage exploration but may not yield immediate gains. Moreover, the internal relational embeddedness serves as an anchor, enabling subsidiaries to convert innovation outcomes into financial returns by aligning experimentation with effective appropriation. Finally, the dissertation identifies managerial aptness as a key condition shaping managers’ activities. Two distinct forms of aptness are defined: local aptness, which enhances external engagement and contextual responsiveness, and global aptness, which fosters alignment with global direction and corporate strategy. Local and global aptness guide how managers direct their influential activities across internal and external networks, ultimately shaping the subsidiary’s strategic positioning and performance within the MNE network. Overall, this dissertation demonstrates that subsidiary performance after structural change stems not from resource assignment alone but from the interplay among managerial aptness, behavioural mechanisms, and relational orchestration. The findings contribute to international business research by demonstrating how subsidiary managers transform structural change into multidimensional performance outcomes, providing a human-centred explanation of adaptation, resilience, and sustained effectiveness in the evolving MNE system

Collaborative Noticing of Multimodality in Language Classroom Interaction : A Telecollaboration Project Between Student‐Teachers of English in Sweden and Japan

    No full text
Telecollaboration in pre-service teacher education promotes intercultural communicative competence and bridges knowledge and practice. Although a growing body of studies has addressed the affordances of telecollaboration for developing student-teachers' (STs') competencies, research focusing on their knowledge of classroom interaction—and on multimodal aspects of classroom interaction in particular—is scarce. Using multimodal conversation analysis (MCA), we address this research gap by investigating the affordances of telecollaboration between STs in Sweden and Japan to notice multimodal aspects of language classroom interaction. The study comes from a “parallel-course project” that aimed to design and conduct telecollaborative tasks within the context of two pre-service English language teacher education courses in Sweden and Japan. The participants (N = 12) met online and worked on video-based tasks using authentic classroom videos. They were grouped to conduct four online sessions (202 min of screen recordings) for analyzing classroom videos and transcriptions. Using MCA, a collection of 51 cases where STs notice and discuss multimodal aspects of teaching was compiled. The findings show that this telecollaboration allowed the STs to notice multimodal aspects of language classroom interaction, including teachers' gestures, gaze, and facial expressions in Japanese and European contexts. We demonstrate that the tasks facilitate collaborative noticing, enactment, and functional description of pedagogical gestures. The tasks also allowed the STs to discuss similarities and differences between the pedagogical cultures, contributing to their awareness of classroom interactional competence. Our study addresses a methodological gap in telecollaboration research by employing MCA. Implications for telecollaboration and curricula in language teacher education, as well as for using conversation analysis as a research methodology, will be given
