On The Move, Uncertain Gains: Investigating the Impact of Labor Mobility on Rural Livelihoods in Bangladesh

Internal labour mobility is vital in altering one's livelihood and economic status. This study examines the causes and effects of labour mobility on the changing of livelihoods and the welfare of migrant workers. Interviews with households were done to obtain information from the Porabari Union in the district of Tangail, Bangladesh, regarding demographics, livelihoods, income, expenses, and savings. The study discovered that the lack of jobs in rural areas, changes in the climate, the absence of facilities for health and education, and the availability of greater chances in urban areas all cause people to migrate and alter their livelihood. The study also explored that young and educated people with small families can get jobs in urban areas and positively change their income, expenditure, and savings levels
Colonial Exploitation and Beyond: Revisiting Indian Environmental History and Historiography
Get PDFThis research paper aims to provide a historical analysis of the environmental history of India from the colonial era to the present. The fundamental themes of environmental historiography in India have been pre-colonial and colonial forest policies. The colonial historians contended that ecological degradation in India was the result of the disregard for the environment by pre-colonial authorities. Therefore, British intervention in managing natural resources was urged to prevent further environmental degradation. The claims made by colonial historians were refuted by Indian historians, who underlined that the management of the resources in British India was motivated by imperial and strategic objectives. The debate among Indian historians concerning India's ecological past is the primary focus of this paper. This research paper also analyses the historiography of Indian environmental history, with a special emphasis on colonial forest policies. Examining the Factors Influencing Performance of 3PL service providers: An Empirical Analysis
Get PDFDue to globalization and rising competition, supply chain services (3PL) are crucial in managing logistics, decreasing operational and non-operational expenses, and managing client and vendor relationships. Suppliers who offer 3PL services aim to improve sustainability and foresee client demand. Thus, this study examines 3PL service provider performance characteristics. Consequently, this study aims to Investigate the elements that affect the performance of third-party logistics (3PL) service providers. The study employed a descriptive research approach to evaluate how warehouse efficiency, transport efficiency, logistics competence, and Disruptive technology efficiency impact the success of 3PL service providers. A questionnaire survey of 126 clients was conducted using quota sampling, and the hypothesis link between the constructs was statistically analyzed. The empirical findings demonstrate warehouse efficiency, packaging efficiency, transportation efficiency, and order fulfillment efficiency. Disruptive technology efficiency and logistics integration systems favorably impact the performance indicators of 3PL service providers. The findings suggest that Disruptive Technology is the most prevalent domain factor. As a result, service providers should develop an appropriate strategy to improve service quality by encouraging sustainable disruptive technology tools and improving operational accuracy. This study can improve production and supplier performance through cost reduction, logistics improvements, and inventory management. This study will help policymakers and logistics managers create an effective framework for selecting third-party logistics providers
Local Bodies and Empowerment of Women: A Study of Women Local Council Members in Aizawl, Mizoram
Get PDFThe implementation of gender-sensitive policies that promote the empowerment and participation of women in the governing process is a crucial requirement for attaining sustainable development in a country like India. This issue has been acknowledged within the framework of policy reforms in both the governmental and local government sectors. It is imperative to focus on the status of women's involvement at this level to enable their empowerment, as sustainable and participatory development cannot be guaranteed without their participation and empowerment. The 73rd and 74th constitutional provisions of the Indian Constitution are regarded as a significant achievement in promoting gender equality and enhancing women's participation in the political power structure which in turn, contributes to the strengthening of local governance and the sustainable development of the country. This paper looks into the working and participation of women in the Local Councils in Aizawl under the Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC). Factors influencing women's participation in local government were examined. Key factors include experience, family leadership history, and facing no obstacles. All participants felt involved in decision-making, some lacked experience, faced obstacles, or lacked connections – highlighting potential barriers. The findings have practical implications which were further discussed. While some limitations exist, the study supports the importance of women in local government. Their diverse perspectives contribute to more responsive policies and ultimately, sustainable development and strong governance
Comprehensive Assessment of Air Pollution Trends during Diwali Festival and Health Impacts: A Study in Lucknow City
Get PDFDiwali, a revered cultural festival nationwide, poses significant environmental challenges, especially in urban hubs like Lucknow. Traditionally marked by elaborate rituals and widespread firecracker usage, Diwali contributes notably to air pollution. Amid mounting concerns over environmental degradation's health impacts, this study examines Diwali's air pollution dynamics, indoor exposure factors, and health effects in Lucknow. By dissecting these intricacies, it seeks to inform targeted interventions for environmental preservation and community health enhancement.
The study adopts an exploratory survey design, employing both primary and secondary data collection methods. Primary data, acquired through structured questionnaires, involves 523 parents and 179 doctors in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. Quota and purposive sampling techniques were utilised to select participants meeting specific criteria. Statistical analyses, including frequency, Chi-square, and exploratory factor analysis, were conducted using SPSS version 25 to achieve research objectives.
The results of the Diwali 2023 air pollution survey in Lucknow City indicate a significant rise in PM10 and PM2.5 levels, notably during nighttime, attributed to firecracker burning. Slight increases in SO2 and NO2 suggest additional fuel combustion. Further, hypotheses testing associations between locality types and indoor air pollution sources revealed significant links to factors like burning mosquito repellents, candles, and genetic predispositions. Doctors highlighted children in flats/apartments, aged 0-4, as most vulnerable, citing socioeconomic and behavioural influences. Seasonal variations and festivals, particularly Diwali, exacerbate air pollution effects. Doctors noted diverse health impacts, from respiratory issues to neurological effects, stressing the need for comprehensive mitigation efforts
Impact of ESG Rating on Financial Performance of NIFTY 50 Companies

Responsible investing takes into consideration Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors to reduce risk and boost returns. This research examines how ESG Risk Rating affects NIFTY 50 Firms financial performance as measured by return on assets, return on equity, return on investment, earnings per share, and net profit margin. The Pooled OLS regression method examined how ESG Risk Rating affected corporate financial performance. The study found that poor ESG ratings lower financial success. This study has significance for both practitioners and policymakers seeking to boost company ESG participation
Disparities of Health Infrastructure Development in Rural Areas of Murshidabad District, West Bengal, India: A Geographical Analysis
Get PDFAccording to 2011 census, nearly 68.84% and 68.30% of total population resides in rural areas in India and West Bengal respectively. However, the infrastructure, resources, and production capacities of these villages vary, leading to distinct socio-economic groups based on their development levels. Such disparities pose challenges for a nation's overall development. The present research paper emphasises the regional disparities in health infrastructure in Murshidabad district of West Bengal, and highlights healthcare facilities and challenges in the public health situation within the district. This study employs a comprehensive approach, utilising both secondary and primary data. Secondary data are collected from different sources and primary data are collected from a sample of 1,040 households distributed across the district. For data analysis, Z-score statistical method is applied, and for the preparation of maps, GIS technique is used. The findings of this research contribute to a nuanced understanding of health infrastructure challenges in the rural landscape of Murshidabad district. By delineating spatial patterns and identifying factors influencing its disparities, the study provides valuable insights for policymakers, healthcare practitioners, and community stakeholders. The outcomes are crucial for informing targeted interventions that promote equitable health infrastructure development in this diverse and geographically expansive district
Trajectories Of ‘The Religion of The People’: The Cases of SNDP And Mahima Dharma
Get PDFDrawing upon Gramsci's notion of "the religion of the people" which is counter-hegemonic and believes in 'intellectual and moral reformation' of an unequal society, this paper argues that there are such intellectual tendencies that grow in organic connection with subaltern strata and articulates resistance to or creates alternative spaces in organised religion. The paper is more about intellectual history rather than actual historical life. It primarily focuses on textual traditions and draws comparative insights in light of Gramsci's conceptual analysis of popular religion. It examines speech acts of two popular religious sects from Kerala and Odisha: Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam (SNDP) and Mahima Dharma led by two towering lower caste intellectuals such as Narayana Guru (Kerala) and Bhima Bhoi (Odisha) both from the late 19th century Colonial India. Both movements produced an alternative religio-social philosophy drawing and transcending the subaltern experience, which critiqued caste order practised forms of social equality within the respective sects but offered different liberation theologies. Despite their differences in their emphasis on social reforms , theology and institution building, both movements complemented each other by creating a mass movement with a new 'liberation theology'.
Determinants Of South Asian Public Sector Bank’s Profitability: A Panel Data Analysis
Get PDFThe profitability of banks serves as a significant measure of their overall success. The metric denotes the profitability achieved by a banking company via the efficient utilisation of its available resources for the production and provision of services. This study assesses the factors that contribute to the profitability of banks from 7 South Asian countries. The dataset of 12 banks was used, including the time frame spanning from 2014-15 to 2023-24. The present research examined the predictive value of ROA, ROE, Assets Quality (AQ), and Non-Profit Loans (NPLs) in assessing profitability. The data is analysed using multiple regression approaches using the E-Views program. The findings revealed that the use of ROE and decreasing NPLs in combination provide the most accurate forecast of profitability for banks in South Asian countries. The research suggests that it would be beneficial for banks to enhance their equity levels to achieve an appropriate ROA and align their decreasing NPLs. This strategic approach is essential for banks to maintain competitiveness and generate better profits for banks in South Asia
