Food processing sector critical for Indian economy, job creation
Niti Aayog CEO Parameswaran Iyer on Friday said the food processing sector is critical for the Indian economy as well as job creation and stressed on ramping up production and exports of processed items. Addressing a CII seminar here, Iyer said there is a need to encourage the MSME sector to enter the food processing sector, which he described as a very important sector for the health of the economy and people. He underlined that food processing can boost farmers income and also help in achieving nutritional goals. Iyer said there is a need to augment primary processing at farm level. Stating that food security has become important in the current global context, he said the government has taken a number of steps in this regard
Changing dynamics of agricultural mechanization in India
Mechanization of agriculture is an essential input in a globalised economic environment. Besides reducing drudgery, mechanisation enhances productivity and reduces cost of cultivation. Besides, utilisation efficiency of other inputs, safety of the agricultural worker, improvements in the quality and value addition of the produce can also be improved. Mechanisation can enable the farmers to raise a second crop in order to utilise the inputs efficiently. Farmers who have access to improved agricultural tools and powered technologies can shift from subsistence farming to more market-oriented farming, making the agricultural sector more attractive to rural youth. Sustainable mechanization is applied to agricultural land preparation, supports timely seeding and planting, weed control, integrated pest management, precise fertilizer application, harvesting, preparation for storage, and value addition operations along the food supply chain in terms of on-farm processing, transport and marketing
Ergonomic Evaluation of Brush Cutters for Women Operators
At present there are different models of brush cutters available in the market. The safety and efficiency aspects of brush cutters are not being studied for women operators and needs to be evaluated. Therefore, a study was undertaken to ergonomically evaluate the commercially available two stroke and four stroke SI engine operated models of brush cutters with different cutting mechanism. Five female subjects were selected, those having anthropometric dimensions conforming to statistical requirements based on the anthropometric survey. The physiological parameters of operators were recorded during the experiments. There was significant difference in heart rate and energy expenditure rate in the operation of different models of brush cutters. Heart rate and energy expenditure were lowest for four stroke SI engine operated model brush cutter. A significant increase in heart rate was noticed while operating different cutter heads in the order of nylon wire, two blade cutter head and three blade cutter head for both models. The heart rate was maximum with a value of 165 beats min-1 while operating two stroke model with three blade cutter attachment. The overall discomfort rating varied from 5.8 to 8.5 on 0 - 10 discomfort scale and was in the range of “Moderate discomfort “to “ Uncomfortable “. The body part discomfort score value was maximum in the operation of two stroke model with three blade attachment, where as it was minimum in the operation of four stroke model with nylon wire. The operation of four stroke and two stroke models with nylon wire were safer for women operators. The operation of two stroke model brush cutter was difficult as compared to four stroke model
Development of Manually Operated 2-Row Rice Transplanter
Transplanting of paddy is a labour intensive operation, requiring about 300-350 man-h/ha, which is roughly 25 per cent of the total labour requirement for the crop. Transplanted paddy require low seed rate (50 kg/ha) as compared to other methods like drilling (100 kg/ha) and broadcasting (130 kg/ha). Four-bar linkage mechanism of a power tiller operated 8-row rice transplanter was analyzed and accordingly modified. The maximum acceleration and velocity at modified link lengths were found to be 1928.40 cm/s2 and 140.10 cm/s respectively at 125 rev/min crank speed. Total distance travelled by the finger in the vertical direction was found to be 20.05 cm. A manually operated new model of 2 - row rice transplanter was developed using the modified four-bar linkages and tested in the puddled field. The average hill-to-hill spacing, depth of planting, no. of seedlings per hill, height of seedlings, missing hills and visible damage were found to be 21.68 cm, 6.98 cm, 3.68, 20.21 cm, 0.085 and 0.27 respectively. The missing hills and floating hills were found to be 8.54 per cent and 3.66 per cent respectively. The actual field capacity and the efficiency of the developed rice transplanter were found to be 0.14 ha / day (8 hrs) and 85.5% respectively

Prospects and constraints in mechanization of homestead system of cultivation in Kerala
Homestead agriculture refers to cultivation around the immediate surroundings of home. This study was conducted to determine the prospects and constraints involved in the adoption of mechanization in the field of homestead agriculture. A general survey was conducted among the homestead farmers of different regions of Kerala to prioritise the constraints faced by the. Using Garrett’s ranking method identified constraints were evaluated and finalized the major one which is restricting the farmers to adopt mechanization in homestead agriculture. It was found that the cultural operations were done using manual labour. Hence drudgery involved in the system was found to be more and time consumption also was high. These two factors need to be addressed hence appropriate and affordable mechanization was required to sustain homestead agriculture. A multipurpose tool carrier powered by a portable engine was identified to serve the purpose

It made the sustainable availability of food to ever increasing population and also increased the per capita income of the farmers.
