Some tourists are drawn by the availability of legal cannabis that in turn, deliver economic benefits to the destination. Where it is legal, cannabis and related businesses attract new marijuana-motivated travelers as well as returning vacationers. Previous studies have shown that the legal cannabis industry can have a positive economic impact at a destination, including increased tax revenues and creating jobs. Additionally, hospitality and related businesses may see revenues increase from new and returning travelers who use it for various reasons, including trying it for the first time. This study focused on the cannabis business in a tourist destination

Artificial Intelligence’s Role in Student Plagiarism: A Graduate University’s Model of Best Practices

    Get PDF
This white paper discusses a model of best practices to better identify and address plagiarism issues with students using AI. It serves as an example to help younger institutions that may not have a policy in place to recognize the importance of hitting this head-on. By creating a taskforce, we were able to quickly come to a resolution for a university that has three campuses in Chicago, Online, and in Vancouver, BC. We also share best practices that will help current professors and core faculty alike in dealing with plagiarism from students using AI in their work. We end with a discussion of examples that support this effort

Zillow Group, Inc.: Changing the Way Americans Buy Homes

    Get PDF
This case explores the rise of Zillow from its inception to its disruption of the mature real estate industry. While the brand, Zillow, is synonymous with real estate, its disruption has opened the door for other innovators to enter the market. The case allows students to understand the role of a disruptor, examine market forces, and recommend what a successful cutting-edge technology company should do in the future

Consumers’ Willingness to Pay a Price Premium for Integrated Products: A Moderated Mediation Model of Hedonic Value and Perceived Quality

    Get PDF
Consumers are increasingly attuned to integrated products, packed with myriad functionality for ‘work’ and ‘play.’ Consumers may evaluate these integrated offerings along the dimensions of hedonic versus utilitarian values, and these products’ communication messaging and positioning may emphasize either the hedonic or utilitarian features. The present research examines the role of perceived hedonic vs. utilitarian values of integrated products vis-à-vis self-image congruence and perceived quality on consumers’ willingness to pay a price premium for these integrated offerings. Using empirical data from two studies, the results show that self-image congruence and willingness to pay a price premium exhibit a positive relationship that is mediated by perceived quality, and the strength of the mediated link varies by the levels of perceived hedonic vs. utilitarian value an individual places on an integrated product. The findings contribute to understanding the antecedents of consumers’ willingness to pay premium prices for integrated offerings

Mentorship Matters: Exploring Experiences With, and Perceptions of, Mentorship in an Undergraduate Sample

    Get PDF
Mentorship is crucial for undergraduate students’ success, yet its definition varies widely. Understanding the nuances of mentorship experiences and perceptions is vital for optimizing mentorship programs and promoting student success. This study investigated undergraduate students’ experiences with, and perceptions of, mentorship, examining its relationship with GPA and demographic variables. A sample of 137 undergraduate students from a private Christian university participated in the study. Data were collected through an online questionnaire containing both qualitative and quantitative measures. While no significant overall relationship between mentorship and GPA was found, complex differences emerged across demographic variables. Significant differences were observed between genders in perceptions of professors and overall mentorship scale. Ethnicity was associated with experiences with mentorship and GPA, highlighting potential biases in mentor-mentee selection. Findings underscore the importance of addressing biases in mentorship selection processes and increasing faculty diversity to meet the needs of diverse student populations. Further research should explore mentorship in community colleges and vocational institutions, prioritizing access to mentorship resources for fostering a supportive learning environment

Effect of Public Debt on Equity Prices

    Get PDF
With the growing debt harbored by the United States becoming harder to sustain, one believes it is imperative to research the effect of increases in public debt and events related to debt management policy on our financial system. In fleshing out this relationship, this paper can supplement the literature surrounding the development of nations through marketable debt products, the behavior of our financial markets and proper public debt management. This study considers the rationality of the market, as it is influenced by this exogenous variable over time, and how that relates to an equity’s price movements. Utilizing a vector-autoregression and structural vector-autoregression estimated with OLS, I will determine how events related to public debt affect equities

    Covenant Strictness Measures

    Get PDF
Covenants are crucial components of loan agreements, designed to protect lenders by imposing various restrictions and obligations on borrowers. Despite extensive empirical research on covenant strictness, a universally accepted measure of covenant strictness remains elusive. Existing metrics tend to include only a limited selection of covenants from the comprehensive contract. This study utilizes loan-level credit risk data to evaluate and rank the effectiveness of several widely used covenant strictness measures. Credit risk at the loan level is assessed through two primary methods: the difference between issue ratings and issuer ratings, and the loan credit spread while controlling for fixed effects at the firm level. This approach allows for a more nuanced comparison and provides insights into which measures most accurately reflect covenant strictness and its impact on credit risk. The findings aim to contribute to a better understanding of covenant effectiveness, offering potential improvements for future loan contract structuring and risk assessment practices

Teaching Case: An Inventory Valuation Dilemma for Financial Statement Reporting

    Get PDF
Using Accounting Standards Update (ASU) 2015-11: Inventory (Topic 330), Simplifying the Measurement of Inventory from the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), and Auditing Standards (AS) 2801: Subsequent Events from the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB), this case study creates critical thinking and ethical decision-making. The assignment requires students to consider inventory valuation given a hypothetical scenario under a triggering event. The case integrates fictitious actors and other components that can be tailored for teaching adaptation. It requires students to assume the role of the participants, while considering how management and auditors could arrive at different standard interpretation

The 5-M Downsizing Communication Model for Survivor-Employee Engagement

    Get PDF
The global economic crisis has led to downsizing, creating survivor-employees and affecting employee-engagement. This study aimed to assess the relationship between banks’ internal communication strategies and their survivor-employee engagement. The research involved in-depth interviews and descriptive design, focusing on 15 commercial banks in Nigeria. The findings revealed that downsizing is prevalent in the industry, with no protection from Nigerian labour laws. The downsizing-communication from top management to survivor-employees is minimal, leading to survivor syndrome and declining employee-engagement. The study created and proposed the 5M-model for downsizing communication and employee engagement. The 5M-model framework connotes Mobilisation, Management, Motivate, Monitor and Measure. However, the 5M-model for downsizing-communication and employee-engagement amplifies the media richness theory, integrates employee-engagement theory and caters for downsizing communication phenomena, a new solution-dimension for optimal employee-organisation relationship. The 5M model communication gradient transits from green to yellow indicating efficacy of communication, the capacity to convey meaning between sender and receiver, record reactions and get immediate feedback. This novel model is a template to improve survivor-employee engagement and employee-organization relationships

The Impact of Male Guardianship on Arab Women’s Careers in the United Arab Emirates

    Get PDF
Arab countries have taken numerous steps to increase women’s labor force participation. Yet, according to many Arab countries’ labor laws, Muslim women are required to provide their potential employers a written permission to work from their legal male guardians (Mahram in Arabic). Her economic participation or career development would not be possible without Mahram’s permission. This study aims to broaden the understanding of the impact of family members on Arab women’s careers by exploring the factors that are important for Mahrams when considering allowing their female family members to work. This paper challenges the conventional career choice theories, such as the social cognitive career theory, by addressing one of its major shortcomings: the question of how free individuals are in their career choices
