A Systematic Review of Data Visualization
Get PDFData visualization involves presenting data in graphical or pictorial form that in turn helps with decision support. This study addresses the importance of data visualizations in today’s data world, and its role in effective communication in various industry sectors. This study applied the PRISMA methodology to conduct the literature review. Four major themes are identified in this paper: data visualization principles, methods, contemporary chart types, and data visualization challenges. Popularly applied data visualization principles such as Gestalt Principles that help make data visualizations more effective are examined. Advanced chart types include doughnut chart, chord diagram, sankey diagram, and violin plot. Some challenges associated with data visualizations are data accuracy, complexity and uncertainty. Given the challenges, visualizations still benefit any field of study that requires interpreting and presenting complex information
The Prospects of Digitalisation Fuelling Rise in Farm Income: Dimensions and Issues
Get PDFThe size of population largely determines food production in many countries. Increase of population along with urbanization unduly stress arable land and water sources. Scientific approaches for sustainable increase in crop production through modern techniques improve efficiency and effectiveness, amplifying the magnitude of resilience even if climate change challenges. Agriculture significantly impacts employment rates in India, as approximately 58% of the workforce is involved in this sector, either directly or indirectly. Today, though India ranks among the top five largest producers and exporters of agricultural goods, the yield per hectare is low when compared to other countries. The issue of losses before and after crop harvest account for approximately one-third of the global food production. Effectively handling these losses can increase the farmers' income and ensure food security, while alleviating strain on scarce land and depleting water sources. This article discusses problems faced by Indian agriculture and examines the potential advantages and prospects of utilizing scientific knowledge and digital technologies to overcome challenges in farming. Despite the notable advancements and rapid growth in digital adoption and transformation in Indian economy, the agricultural sector is still in its nascent stage of development phase

Logistics and the Fall‒ Unpacking Civilization Collapse Through Two Lenses
Get PDFThe study of civilization collapse has gained significant attention since the 1980s, largely due to researchers like Joseph Tainter and Jared Diamond. Tainter explores how increasing societal complexity leads to higher management costs, ultimately causing collapse when marginal returns diminish, including in areas like logistics. In contrast, Diamond investigates various drivers of collapse, particularly environmental factors, and highlights that societies often fail when they cannot adapt their supply chains to challenges such as environmental degradation and climate crises. While Tainter views logistics as a fundamental aspect of societal complexity, Diamond includes it within his broader analysis of the causes of collapse. Despite this, it is unfortunate that the topic remains largely overlooked in supply chain management research. This paper seeks to fill that gap by demonstrating that logistical failures play a critical role in the collapse of civilizations, linking historical patterns to current vulnerabilities in modern, interconnected systems. By examining these past cases, the contribution underscores the need for resilient logistics in avoiding similar outcomes today
Expanding the Johari Windows to Describe Interpersonal Communication
Get PDFDuring the past 40 years considerable focus has been placed on the Johari Window (Luft, 1984), a tool designed to understand the process of self-disclosure and to increase self-awareness of the conscious and unconscious knowledge of self. Typically, a single, four quadrant model is employed to achieve these goals. The present paper offers an expansion to the application of the original model. Rather than a single model representing two interactants, two interlinked windows are recommended. This change provides a unique window for each interactant participating in the communication process. The window for each interactant has three unique quadrants (i.e., Blind, Hidden, and Unknown) and a shared Open quadrant. The proposed modification to the original Johari Window model illustrate more clearly the transactional nature of self-disclosure and provide the means to quantify and analyze the reciprocal awareness resulting from self-disclosure. These benefits offer a more sophisticated basis for instruction and research
Cannabis Licensing and Municipal Revenues
Get PDFMunicipal license policy has shaped the early roll-out and business outcomes of Proposition 64. Several stakeholders identify license availability as a key constraint to future cannabis market growth in California. Recent studies explore local cannabis licensing policy; however, key questions remain around municipal revenues, business location, and the role of supporting cannabis business ownership. Our paper explores the impacts of cannabis licensing on business locations and municipal taxable revenues. We use publicly-available Department of Cannabis Control licensing data to examine business locations using GIS analysis, conduct a regression analysis of city-level licenses and Department of Tax and Fee Administration revenues across California, and forecast potential municipal taxable revenues in South Bay Los Angeles. We find that licensed cannabis businesses appear to develop in Los Angeles County and are located close to borders of cities not issuing licenses, in areas of favorable zoning, in densely populated locations, and areas with higher poverty and minority populations. Our regression analysis suggests that city population drives municipal taxable revenue, indicating that business follows demand
Community Staff Well-Being and Organizational Practices During COVID-19 and Beyond: A Mixed Method Study
Get PDFThis study explored community workers' experiences during COVID-19, focusing on their well-being and organizational coping strategies. A mixed-method approach included five focus group discussions (FGDs) (three with practitioners and two with managers) and an online survey with 47 frontline workers. Statistical analysis using SPSS 21 and thematic analysis with QDAMiner identified three main thematic categories: (a) Pandemic context and working practices; (b) Well-being at work; and (c) Psychosocial support. Findings highlighted the need for systematized collective care through compassionate leadership and government support. The study underscored the ongoing need for structured collective support for frontline workers during and beyond crises like COVID-19
Case Study of Transforming and Scaling Entrepreneurial Internship Access in IHE
Get PDFThis case study explores innovative approaches to expand access to high-quality internships and improve equitable student outcomes. It focuses on Lehigh University’s virtual Innovation Internship program, partnered with the Nasdaq Entrepreneurial Center and Epixego Inc. The program aims to address challenges in traditional internships, such as hidden curriculum, false narratives, and unequal social environments. By incorporating self-assessment of learning competencies and enhancing student agency, the program doubled its capacity to 40 students. The study measured student self-efficacy, occupational identity choice, and outcome expectations based on various factors. Results showed that students changed internship preferences across occupation categories and experienced increases in entrepreneurial self-efficacy (3%), occupational identity (7%), and perception of entrepreneurship education (4%). This multifaceted approach demonstrates the potential for innovative internship designs to improve accessibility and student development outcomes
The Impact of COVID-19 on Commodity and S&P 500 Sector Return Volatility
Get PDFWe investigate the impact of COVID-19 on commodity return volatility. We find that the impact of COVID-19 on return volatility is different across different markets. Unlike S&P 500 sector indices, commodity return volatility is less sensitive to the impact of COVID-19. The impact of vaccination programs on return volatility is weak for both commodity and financial markets. We employ Fama-French 3 Factor Model and APARCH (1,1) for return volatility estimation. The variation in COVID-19’s impact across different markets has an important implication for return volatility hedging
Food Insecurity Cost Estimates for El Paso, Texas
Get PDFFood insecurity is a fairly pervasive problem throughout the United States that is especially burdensome for low-income regions. While the latter is generally recognized, there have been very few efforts to quantify the dollar costs of food insecurity, especially at the regional level. This study attempts to do so for El Paso County, Texas. This is achieved by first adjusting for inflation cost estimates in a prior national level study. Regional differences with respect to the nation are then utilized to calculate comparable costs for El Paso. Results indicate that the economic damage wrought by food insecurity in El Paso during 2023 exceeded $745 million. That represents nearly 2 percent of total personal income in the county for that year
