Artificial Intelligence: Increasing Business Profits at the Cost of Consumer Privacy

    Get PDF
Artificial Intelligence may be the most significant technological breakthrough since the development of computers. The promise of greater efficiency and effectiveness is very appealing, especially as that translates into more profitable businesses. The potential applications appear almost endless, crossing every industry and every form of business activity. The potential results cannot even be estimated. Artificial Intelligence can assist in detecting misinformation, but it can also assist in spreading misinformation when faulty algorithms collect incorrect data. An example of this occurs when customer demographic data mixes information from consumers with the same names. Persons who frequently relocate may also be more likely to have faulty consumer data collected by business research companies. However, in our rush to be the first and the best, we must ask ourselves how much of our privacy we are willing to give up? In this paper, the authors examine this fascinating emerging technology with a preview of the technology’s business potential

    Get PDF
This study aims to enhance Microbial Fuel Cells (MFCs) reliability for remote environmental monitoring, emphasizing unexplored facets of accurate energy prediction and the integration of renewable energy-powered Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Following comprehensive research, design, and component procurement, an innovative and cost-effective IoT system was developed, leveraging renewable energy from MFCs. Using an Arduino UNO-WiFi, data was collected and showcased on a web page while logged in a Google Firebase database, with an Android app created for intuitive smartphone visualization. Over four months, sensor data was accumulated. An Artificial Intelligence (AI) model, employing Autoregressive Integrated Moving Average (ARIMA), precisely forecasted MFC energy production (RMSE: 0.0119 and 0.0113 for trials 1 and 2). Despite the initial energy production surge, a subsequent decline occurred due to organic matter depletion. This prototype represents an affordable and sustainable solution for cloud-based IoT environmental monitoring with AI-driven energy forecasts, embodying innovation in renewable energy applications and sustainable practices

Whether we use an application like Siri to send a text message or facial recognition to access a device, AI is an integral part of everyday technology. Artificial Intelligence has especially been integrated into various healthcare sectors, improving patient health outcomes and overall healthcare delivery. Diagnostic AI systems enhance clinical decision-making, personalizing treatment, and reducing stigma. However, its extensive use raises concerns about dependency, credibility, and its effects on physical and mental health. This research explores the advantages and drawbacks of AI dependency, emphasizing the need to use AI judiciously to safeguard decision-making capabilities. Additionally, trust and confidence in AI is vital for its successful implementation in healthcare. In mental health, AI offers promise for early detection and personalized treatment, addressing accuracy and accessibility limitations. To fully harness AI’s potential, ethical concerns, data privacy, and algorithmic bias must be addressed to harness AI’s potential in mental health care

Marketing for Small Business Escape Rooms and the Importance of Experiential Learning

    Get PDF
A semi-rural Ohio escape room collaborated with a local university for an experiential learning initiative, aiming to attract more college students, retain current customers, and enhance marketing strategies. Two questionnaires were employed: one targeting college students and the other existing customers. Findings revealed a higher attendance of upperclassmen students at the escape room and email as the preferred mode of communication. Moreover, a significant correlation between escape room experience, games, food, drinks, and overall satisfaction was observed. The customer-focused survey indicated the primary demographic as individuals aged eighteen to twenty-nine, with a high satisfaction rate of ninety-seven and a half percent. Additionally, sixty-three percent expressed interest in returning for a new escape room design

The Influence of COVID-19 on Online Sales in the Wine Sector: A Portuguese Case Study

    Get PDF
COVID-19 reinforced the adoption of an online sales strategy, with e-commerce proven to be an asset in achieving positive results. Based on this premise, a case study was developed in the wine sector, to identify a strategic model for the implementation and management of a virtual store. The simultaneous presence of businesses in the largest number of distribution channels is the differentiating factor in the wine sector, as it currently has an extremely attractive market dynamics for its stakeholders. A qualitative methodological case study was developed analyzing the wine sector e-commerce in the context of a theoretical model. The conclusions highlight an increase of online sales in the wine sector in Portugal, and consequently, the importance of creating a virtual store. The growth of the B2C online sales channel indicates there is ‘divergence’ from the traditional offline B2B sales channel. There is resistance by the B2B sales model to adopt online B2C, but despite this, the wine sector favoring e-commerce has seen a boost in sales profits. Pandemic restrictions reduced consumer physical contact which is a limitation of this single case study

Optimizing Healthcare Flexible Spending Account Contributions Using Inventory Management Theories: An Interdisciplinary Study

    Get PDF
The healthcare Flexible Spending Account (FSA) offers employees significant tax benefits by allowing the use of pre-tax funds for healthcare expenses, but it also carries the risk of forfeiting unspent funds. To address the challenge of maximizing tax savings while minimizing the risk of forfeiture, this study applies inventory management and economic theories to develop a heuristic for optimizing FSA contributions. Both basic and extended versions of FSAs are examined, alongside the impact of marginal tax rates on decision-making. A simulation model demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed heuristic, with results showing minimal deviations from the optimal solutions—less than 0.42% for the basic version and 3.11% for the extended version, and performance differences of less than 0.005% and 0.08%, respectively. By integrating operations management, economic theories, and personal finance research, this study introduces a novel decision-support tool for optimizing FSA contributions, while also laying the groundwork for future research in this interdisciplinary field

Stay or Leave: Investigating Factors Impact Crowd-Based Workers’ Platform-Based Justice Perceptions and Turnover Intentions

    Get PDF
Crowdsourcing has emerged as a transformative business model, harnessing collective intelligence to tackle complex tasks efficiently. However, the impact of crowd-based platforms on workers’ justice perceptions is still understudied. This research delves into organizational justice perceptions among crowd-based workers, focusing on platform features that influence these perceptions as well as workers’ subsequent turnover intentions. Drawing on data collected from 364 workers across multiple platforms, findings indicate that equitable compensation policies, participative evaluation, interactive and considerate communication, and rule-based evaluation can enhance procedural, distributive, and interactional justice perceptions, which in turn, significantly reduce turnover intentions. Moreover, media richness moderates part of these relationships, strengthening the mitigating effects of justice perceptions on turnover intentions. The study contributes to understanding the dynamics of organizational justice in crowdsourcing contexts and provides insights for platform management strategies to enhance worker retention

Does Intellectual Capital Influence Firm's Financial Performance in Bangladesh?

    Get PDF
This paper aimed to find the effects of intellectual capital and its components on firms’ financial performance in Bangladesh. A sample of 100 firms comprised of 48 manufacturing, 21 services, and 31 banking companies was studied for five years from 2017 to 2021, setting 500 firm-year observations. Data was collected purposively from secondary sources, such as annual reports of sampled companies. The robust fixed-effect regression model using STATA 14.2 software was applied to test the hypothesis due to autocorrelation and heteroscedasticity problems. The regression results documented that overall IC, human capital efficiency (HCE), and capital employed efficiency (CEE) positively and significantly enhanced the ROA and ROE of the firms. However, structural capital efficiency (SCE) and relational capital efficiency (RCE) negatively and insignificantly influenced the same. The study contributes to resource-based theory using econometric methods to extend the samples of both financial and non-financial companies. This study helps investors, managers, policy-makers, governments, and accounting regulatory bodies regarding the utilization pattern of invisible and tangible resources in Bangladeshi firms

It was concluded that the government interventions involved with the fiscal and monetary policies failed to improve the market failure and even caused the government failure. The conclusions revealed a significant implication for the policymakers to make the proper policies when facing the challenges in the future

The Geographic Proximity Among Firms, Auditor Office and SEC office and Audit Fees

    Get PDF
This paper investigates the geographic distances among the auditors, audit clients, and the regulatory agency Securities & Exchange Commission (SEC) and their impact on audit quality. Consistent with the exacerbated information asymmetry issue caused by distance, we find the audit quality is negatively associated with the distance between the client/auditor and the SEC offices. We further find that auditors charge higher fees when they are closer to the SEC office, irrespective of the client’s distance to the SEC. This suggests that the distance between auditor and the SEC has a more prominent influence than the client’s location on the audit quality
