For a Contemporary Vision of the History and the Phenomenology of Fashion
This paper traces the salient phenomena that have marked the history of fashion and define it as it is now-adays. Foremost, an attempt is made to value the term “fashion” under different lights. From the 18th century onward, there was a succession of historical, political, social, and cultural changes that accelerated the phenomenon consolidation of fashion as a cultural phenomenon of great importance and dynamism, both in terms of its incursions into the languages of art and in terms of the international economy.
A few focuses follow: on Lombard clothing, on how some items played different roles besides clothing, on the costume in the Goldoni’s theater, on the twentieth-century Decadentism of Oscar Wilde, and others. Other aspects that characterize the industry today follow: the intersection of fashion with all the other arts, the role of magazines in the process of women’s emancipation, the meaning of “fashion showcase”, luxury brands and the phenomenon of their counterfeiting, the role of the “prosumer”, and sustainable fashion laws, looking toward a future zero-carbon society
Protecting Intellectual Property in International Expansion: Preparing an Innovation-Based SME
A key concern among innovation-based SMEs is to protect their intellectual property (IP) as they grow internationally. To explore the challenges such resource-constrained firms face, we conducted action research at a technology-based SME that aspired to expand internationally. Through collaborative and periodic interventions, we sought to help managers of the organization work around the issues that surfaced while preparing to internationalize further. Our collaboration led us to examine isolating mechanisms, such as rapid international expansion, that the SME could deploy to pre-empt competitive imitation of their innovative products and processes, especially as their IP is not protected legally (e.g., by patents). Results point to inevitable identified tensions and paradoxes, leading us to approaches and practices the firm can adopt
Mindfulness Matters
Mindfulness is an effective way for educators and students to manage their emotions, as well as reduce stress and anxiety. When implemented, mindfulness practices help students focus on the present moment and regulate their emotions. This article will first define mindfulness and explain how teachers can incorporate mindfulness strategies into an elementary classroom setting. Next, it examines mindfulness programs that school districts are using throughout the United States. Then, it explains social emotional learning and activities that support these practices within the classroom. The article concludes by offering outcomes and implications for mindfulness. Through mindfulness techniques, students can foster a positive environment and improve their social and physical well-being
Advancing Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment: A Case Study of Women Working in Rural Cambodia’s WASH Sector
This paper explores Cambodia’s progress in gender equality over the last 25 years, focusing on its adherence to international human rights treaties, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, and the implementation of the Neary Ratanak Strategic Plan. Despite advancements, challenges persist in women’s empowerment. The study presents a case study of a Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) development intervention to promote women’s empowerment at the commune and village levels. It suggests key strategies to enhance gender equality, including providing training and awareness, promoting participation, offering job opportunities and financial support, facilitating decision-making roles, and enforcing laws related to women’s rights. The findings underscore the importance of training and networking opportunities for female WASH suppliers, emphasizing the need for more training, education, and awareness. The paper concludes with implications for policy to enhance gender equality and women’s empowerment in Cambodia, aligning with the Neary Ratanak V strategy’s goals
Sortino(γ): A Modified Sortino Ratio With Adjusted Threshold
A portfolio’s Sortino ratio is strongly affected by the risk-free vs. risky assets mix, except for the case where the threshold, T is equal to the risk-free rate. Therefore, if T differs from the risk-free rate, the portfolio’s Sortino ratio could potentially be increased by merely changing the mix of the risk-free and the risky components. The widely used Sharpe ratio, on the other hand, does not share this caveat.
We introduce a modified Sortino ratio, Sortino(γ), which is invariant concerning the portfolio’s risk-free vs. risky assets mix and eliminates the above deficiency. The selected threshold T(γ), mimics the portfolio composition in the sense that it equals to the risk-free rate plus γ times the portfolio’s equity risk premium. Higher selected γ reflects higher risk/loss aversion. We propose a procedure for optimizing the composition of the risky portion of the portfolio to maximize the Sortino(γ) ratio. In addition, we show that Sortino(γ) is consistent with first and second-order stochastic dominance with riskless asset rules
An Empirical Assessment of IAS 40 Investment Property
This study examines the value relevance of the fair value model versus the cost model for evaluating investment properties under IAS 40 Investment Property. Contrary to the popular belief that fair value is the most relevant measurement attribute, we find that the coefficient estimate of investment properties for Chinese companies that adopted IAS 40’s fair value model is significantly smaller than its theoretical value, and is not significantly different from zero, suggesting that reported fair values are not value relevant as perceived by investors for the sample firms. Furthermore, investors tend to adjust the valuation of fair value companies’ non-investment property assets downward. The findings do not support the claim that fair value is superior to historical cost for the investment property valuation. Our findings highlight the need for more implementation guidelines from the IASB to enhance the value relevance of fair value estimates under IAS 40
