From a Word to a World: An Innovative Teaching at a Higher Educational Institution in China
Get PDFChina’s higher educational reform created innovative ways to cultivate talents urgently needed for social development during the late 1970s. This paper investigates an enlightening teaching reform of English major on the basis of Tianshui Normal College in Gansu Province. The historical course has three typical examples: enthusiastically fostering talents, seeking more profound cultural exchanges, and moving educational reform forward. Professor Hu Dingyi, as a leading implementer, explored and created a good learning atmosphere for collegiate students beyond the classroom teaching and achieved remarkable results. His innovative thoughts are of great value to promote classroom teaching for students’ gaining the most precious noble ideal, ethnic culture and more subject expertise
Development of Learning Management Model of Collaborative Learning and Positive Coaching on Cloud Computing System
Get PDFThis study aims to systematically review the learning management model on cloud computing system using collaborative learning and positive coaching. The author uses the literature review to synthesize research as the main process to study related documents, books, research studies, and articles both domestically and internationally. They are selected by purposive sampling for 69 topics. The documents are analyzed by systematic review. This study is a qualitative study and uses content analysis by using keywords to discover three issues as follows: Cloud computing, Collaborative learning, and Positive coaching. From the results of this study, Cloud computing comprises six components: Cloud learning content, Cloud collaboration, Cloud communication, Cloud creation, Cloud presentation, and Cloud evaluation. The collaborative learning process has five steps as follows: Engagement phase, Exploration phase, Transformation phase, Presentation phase, and Reflection phase. Positive coaching comprises five process as follows: Construct the positive relation, Set a clear and challenging goal, Implement a challenging goal to smooth practice, Set a more challenging goal and practice smoothly, and Evaluate and expand the experience, reward the outcome and discovery
Examınıng the Teacher Candıdates’ TPACK Competences: Evıdence From Four Teacher Educatıon Programs
Get PDFThis study examined the valid items in the perception of TPACK competencies of physics, math, biology, and chemistry teacher candidates in one public university in Indonesia. This study used a cross-sectional survey where data were collected once from one sample at a time. The study was conducted in four teacher education programs in one public university. This study used a stratified proportioned random sampling technique. The sample for this study consisted of 400 students from 4 teacher education programs including Physics Education, Chemistry Education, Biology Education, and Mathematics programs. Data were collected through a questionnaire with 75 statements related to TPACK competency indicators. The data were processed and analyzed through Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) and by using SmartPLS 3.0 software. The results showed that of 75 statements, there were 27 valid statements related to TPACK competency indicators. These 27 statements can potentially be used to measure TPACK competencies of teacher candidates. The results obtained from the factor analysis and the Smart PLS procedures showed that the construction of items in the instrument and their relevance to each other is appropriate. Based on the overall results, one of the main findings of this study is that the predictive power of the core knowledge base and the second-level knowledge base on TPACK development is significantly different
Inclusive Faculty Hiring: Promising Practices for Increasing Higher Education Faculty Diversity
Get PDFThis paper reviews and synthesizes the extant work on promising practices in recruiting and hiring diverse college faculty in an equitable, inclusive process. First, I discuss the substantial demographic mismatch between faculty, the general working-age population, and undergraduate students. I then discuss the evidence that representational faculty diversity benefits students. I then integrate the literature on promising practices in inclusive faculty recruitment to recommend four strategies: better position advertisements, ongoing, proactive recruitment, thoughtful committee assignment and training, and a more deliberate, deliberative process. I offer multiple tactics within each strategy and urge institutions to adopt and prioritize whatever mix of these and other strategies/tactics makes the most sense for them
Does Denomination Influence Pastors’ Readiness for Retirement? Evidence From Southern California Pastors
Get PDFThis study explores retirement issues among pastors. Recent studies indicate that many pastors work past retirement age due to financial unpreparedness. We examine whether retirement preparedness and job satisfaction vary by denomination. We focus on three key retirement concerns: retirement comfort, overall job satisfaction, and financial satisfaction. Using survey data from Southern California pastors, we find that Methodist pastors are more prepared for retirement compared to others, while Presbyterian pastors are less content with their roles than other denominations. However, denomination does not significantly affect the financial satisfaction of pastors
Founders’ Characteristics and Startups’ Funding Opportunities Around the Globe
Get PDFIn this paper, I investigate the eleven largest startup markets in the world to uncover whether female founders have a disadvantage in the amount of funding received by their respective startups. I am also interested in whether country-level factors such as the level of development and quality of formal and informal institutions can impact the results. Moreover, I research founders with formal technical education to show if they have any advantage while funding their startups.
I investigate more than 3,500 international startups during the period of 2017-2022 while utilizing CrunchBase database. I uncover that female founders are at a disadvantage in funding for their startups in all 11 countries of interest. Such results are more pronounced in developed countries, those with better functioning formal institutions and more individualistic populations. The disparity between male and female-led startups’ funding is especially pronounced in debt financing as well as seed round of equity financing. The technical education of male and female founders does not provide any advantage in terms of the funding opportunities
Bringing the World to a Rural Campus
Get PDFIn July 2021 the United States Department of State and United States Department of Education released a joint statement on the need for higher education to be global. At rural universities across our nation this can be a challenge. One method to globalize the curriculum and experience of students is to utilize the international students studying on your campus. In the fall 2019 this method was used for a cultural mentoring project pairing international MBA students with undergraduate students in an introductory course. This led to student sharing their experiences and cultural exchanges increasing the global and intercultural competence of all the students involved

Inquiry-Guided Experiential Learning in FASB Codification Research: An Investment Portfolio Simulation Project
Get PDFWe designed and implemented an inquiry-guided experiential learning project in which students researched and interpreted accounting standards from FASB Accounting Standards Codification to support their applications and assessment of the accounting treatment in a hands-on quasi-real-world simulation for investment activities. Specifically, in the project’s first phase, students explored, researched, identified, and interpreted the related accounting standards from the Codification for a fictional client’s investment activities. Students then ran an investment portfolio simulation in the second phase, in which they (1) created organic investment activities, (2) made authentic applications of accounting standards, (3) analyzed and evaluated the impact on self-prepared financial reports, and (4) modified subsequent investment decisions. Most students were well motivated to explore and self-study the accounting concepts and procedures. They considered the project relevant, interesting, and effective. Their performance in project knowledge tests improved student learning along factual, conceptual, procedural, and metacognition knowledge dimensions. They were willing to put time and effort into the project and would recommend it for future use
