Migration of Labour - A View after Corona
The world is witnessing an unprecedented disaster because of Covid-19, which has brought all humans imprisoned in their house and all industrial activities to a halt. The shutdown of the Industrial activities is unprecedented. The case in India is not much different as most of the industrial activities have come to a halt. The prolonged lockdowns, beginning March 25, led a reverse migration with workers leaving cities and going back to their home states or districts or villages. The industries activities were shut down and their wages were struck with the employers. So, it was a big challenge for them of paying house rent and taking care of their basic needs, apart from health concerns. A number of migrant workers who fled the big cities may possibly never return, preferring to eke out a living on their marginal farms or find work in nearby towns. Before the arrival of Britishers India was predominantly a confined agricultural economy. Village was the smallest self-sufficient unit in fulfilling the needs of the people. The rough British policies had started migration from rural to semi-urban and semi-urban to cities areas. After the Independence the rural to urban migration in the wake of fast growth of the industry in the country became widespread. There are many reasons for urban to rural migration that includes- tendency to look for jobs, improved transportation, urban oriented education, modernization, impact of vast malls and entertainment facilities. A large number of rural people have been forced to migrate to urban areas because of shortage of livelihood in rural areas and shortage of agricultural and related occupations. Poverty, lack of local options and the non- availability of work in elsewhere become the trigger and the pull for rural migration. In an unorganized and chaotic labour market, migrant workers regularly face struggles and disputes at worksites. We cannot conclude that migration is a bad phenomenon, but we have seen that during the disaster, the migrate labourers are most suffer. They lost their jobs and the question of their livelihood stand in front of them. In fact, migrants play a vital role in the development of Metro and big cities and industrialisation of our country depends on these workers. We have to sort out the problems of migrants labourer, so that in coming years, they have not to leave their work place in disaster like Corona
Indian Historiography on the Revolt of 1857: A Study
The mass revolution of 1857-58 has a prominent place in the events taking place at the international level against imperialism. Although Karl Marx has a prominent place in the early historiography done on this rebellion along with English historians, and intellectuals, there was also a huge difference in their approach. While Marx described this rebellion as a people\u27s war fought for liberation against imperialist exploitation, imperialist writers described it as motivated by personal interests and personal reasons. On the other hand, the British government was holding a particular class responsible for this rebellion, which also needed to be answered. The manner in which the revolt was portrayed by official and non-official English administrators and scholars and historians naturally caused outrage among educated Indians, and some of them were motivated to uncover its true cause and nature
Social Status Of Women In Medieval Mithila: A Critical Analysis
The kingdom of Videha seems to be mentioned for the first time in the “Samhitas” of the Yajurveda. Mithila the capital of Videha is not referred to in the Vedic texts, but is often mentioned in the Budhist Jatakas and the Jaina and the Brahmana, purana as well as the Epic. From the Brihad Vishnu Purana we learn that Videha or Mithila was 24 Yojana length for the river Kausiki to the river Gandaki and 16 Yojana in breadth from the river Ganga to the Himalaya.
The social status of women in a feudal society has been nicely depected in the writings of Vidyapati and writers of Mithila. According to Vidyapati a women needth a youth and never refrained from dependence on another. A woman has been compared to a tender creeper which dries up as soon as it is touched or pressed by and ordinary substance. Women were not active participants in the activities of the State, though we have an example of Lakhima and Viswas Devi in the history of the period concerned. Since women were believed to be of a weak mind and devoid of all knowledge, wisdom and their social position. The social status of women in general in the early medieval and medieval period was demoralizing. The Sudra and the women were placed in the same category. The society had no respect for them. They were not allowed to expose themselves physically as it was regarded as the worst dishonor. Devoid of her husband’s protection a chaste women had no other place where she could live in a peace and happiness and she could not even go to her father’s house without his consent. In the long run they became dependent upon him at every stage of life
