Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, media channels became key sources of information for the public and played an important role in shaping attitudes toward vaccination. In Prishtina, where access to traditional media, digital platforms, and healthcare services is high, examining their influence on vaccine acceptance remains an important research priority. Objective: To identify which media sources had the greatest influence on citizens’ decisions regarding COVID-19 vaccination and to determine the factors associated with vaccine acceptance or hesitancy among adults in Prishtina. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted from January to December 2024 with a total of 400 adults recruited through convenience sampling across different geographic areas of Prishtina. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire assessing sources of information, trust in media, attitudes toward vaccination, and exposure to promotional campaigns. Descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests, and binary logistic regression were applied to identify predictors of vaccination uptake. Results: Television was the most commonly reported source of information (41.5%), followed by social media (29.3%), healthcare professionals (28.0%), and online portals (9.0%). Trust in television was highest (mean 4.0 on a 1–5 scale), while social media received the lowest trust score (2.2). Overall, 66.8% of participants reported receiving at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. Among the unvaccinated group, 57.4% indicated that misinformation on social media influenced their decision. Logistic regression showed that trust in media and exposure to promotional health campaigns were positively associated with vaccine acceptance (p < 0.05), whereas exposure to misinformation on social media was significantly associated with hesitancy. Conclusion: Traditional media—particularly television—played a positive role in promoting COVID-19 vaccination in Prishtina, while social media remained an important source of misinformation. Strengthening public health communication through healthcare professionals and reliable information platforms is essential to counter misinformation in future health emergencies.

Analysis Of The Distribution Of Volcanic Ash From The Eruption Of Mount Merapi In 2010 Using Three-Dimensional Gaussian Plume Modeling And Hysplit (Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory)

The powerful 2010 eruption of Mount Merapi produced a widespread volcanic ash cloud with significant impacts, making a clear understanding of its dispersion pattern essential for disaster mitigation efforts. This study attempts to remodel this ash dispersion using two different approaches: the 3D Gaussian Plume and HYSPLIT models. The research aimed to analyze how eruption parameters and weather conditions influenced the ash's direction and spread, and to qualitatively compare the model outputs with MODIS Terra satellite imagery. To achieve this, the study processed volcanological data, such as column height and eruption volume, alongside meteorological data from ERA5 reanalysis for three key eruption phases: October 26, October 30, and November 5, 2010. The results show that the 3D Gaussian Plume model tended to produce an idealized dispersion pattern, spreading symmetrically from the peak with concentrations of 1.494E-03 kg/m³ (Oct 26), 4.395E-05 kg/m³ (Oct 30), and 0.0336 kg/m³ (Nov 5). In contrast, the HYSPLIT model provided more realistic results, depicting an elongated ash plume that followed the prevailing wind direction, with maximum mass load reaching 8.2 mg/m² (Oct 26), 0.1 mg/m² (Oct 30), and 110 mg/m² (Nov 5). The analysis confirms that the interplay between the eruption's characteristics (especially column height and emission rate) and meteorological conditions (wind speed) was the primary factor determining the ash's trajectory and reach. While both models accurately pinpointed the eruption's source, further validation was challenging as persistent cloud cover on the satellite images obscured the view of the ash plume

    Get PDF

Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a drug-induced strain of S. aureus due to its fast acquisition of drug-resistant genes which has given rise to the emergence and spread of drug mediated S. aureus infections that are difficult to treat in the healthcare settings leading to prolonged hospitalization, delayed cure rate, and high mortality rates. The adverse effect of MRSA infection has not been fully elucidated, due to paucity of data on adverse complication of MRSA among hospitalized patients in Adamawa state, hence this study. This study evaluates the prevalence, and risk factors of MRSA strains in Adamawa state, Nigeria. A total of 339 clinical samples were collected from patients with long-term hospitalization in various hospitals spread across the state. The study adopted a cross-sectional design that involved consecutive sampling method that enrolled patients with different ailments that had multiple episodes of diseases due to long term hospitalizations. The samples were processed bacteriologically and MRSA isolated were confirmed with ChromAgar MRSA.The data obtained were subjected to statistical analysis and significant level was taken at p ≤ 0.05. The prevalence rate of MRSA, MSSA and CONSA isolated were 25.96% (88/339) and 8.6% (29/339) and 12.1% (41/339) respectively. The highest number of isolates obtained was from Yola-South LGA with 17.4%.  It was observed that MRSA infections increases as the age of the patients increases with highest prevalence rate of 5.6% among those of 51+ year old. The risk factor that was statistically significant was residential area (p = 0.031) as those that lived in slum areas were five, seven, five and sixteen times more likely to acquire MRSA than those of rural, high density, semi-urban and low-density areas respectively. MRSA were observed to be high among those with non-diabetic foot ulcer, bone fractures and blood-borne infections with a prevalence rates of 5.6% (19/339), 3.5% (12/339) and 2.95% (10/339) respectively. In conclusion, the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus and its antibiotics induced strains, MRSA is prevalent in Adamawa state and this increases the disease pathological burdens. Continuous education and infection control interventions are highly recommended

Analyse Des Lacunes Législatives En Matière De Protection Contre Les Risques Biotechnologiques En RDC

    Get PDF
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) faces increasing biotechnological risks linked to the rise of synthetic biology, genetic manipulation, and the potential proliferation of dangerous biological agents. While the national legal framework remains embryonic and fragmented, biotechnology is expanding in several sectors, including agriculture, health, the environment, animal husbandry, and agro-industry. The prevention of biotechnology-related risks is based on the Cartagena Protocol, which states parties, including the DRC, have ratified and committed to establishing legal and administrative mechanisms to ensure adequate safety against probable negative effects on the environment, as well as on human and animal health. Despite these commitments, it is unfortunate to note that the DRC has not been able to implement them effectively and efficiently. This is why this study identifies the main shortcomings in Congolese biotechnology legislation and suggests ways to harmonize it with regional and international standards.
