Fairness and Inequality in The Age of Al: A Framework for Healthcare Decision Makers

    No full text
Advisor: Professor Dan Tenney UB RISE 2023, Technology Management Department, University of Bridgeport.Artificial intelligence (Al) has the potential to revolutionize healthcare by increasing efficiency, reducing costs, and improving quality. Al systems can analyze and learn from large amounts of data, such as medical images and electronic health records (EHR), which will help health professionals make informed clinical decisions. However, the potential benefits of Al have raised vast and complex ethical issues, such as accountability, fairness, and privacy. Thus, this paper aims to extend the debate on the ethical impact of Al in healthcare, focusing on fairness and equity. Also, it provides a pipeline framework designed to help decisionmakers identify the potential sources of inquity issues during planning, developing, and deploying AI-based solutions for medical purposes

Advisor: Arthur McAdams, Dan Tenney UB RISE 2023, Technology Management Department, College of Enegineering, Business, and Education, University of Bridgeport. This is a showcase poster to promote one of my current researh interests and to engage and attract the high school students who may become cybersecurity professional or researcher in the future. Small and medium-sized businesses are particularly vulnerable because they may not have the resources or expertise for cybersecurity. A successful ransomware attack can be devastating for a small business, causing data loss, financial losses, and reputational damage. To protect aganinst RaaS and ransomware attacks, SMBs should implement strong security technologies and a plan in place for responding to a ransomeware attack. My work is to help SMBs in selecting and efficiently implementing the appropriate solutions, services and strategies on a budget, without an in-house CISO or Blue team

Measuring Employee Awareness of Vision/Mission, Budget/Profitability, and Values/Culture for improved Organizational Performance

    No full text
UB RISE 2023, School of Engineering, College of Enegineering, Business, and Education, University of Bridgeport.Organizational performance has been studied for more than fifty years, and there are several programs (e.g., Baldrige, Balanced Scorecard, Excellence, Quality, Six Sigma, TQM) that offer methods and measures for promoting organizational excellence/sustainability. Taken as a whole, these performance programs agree that high-performing organizations continuously seeks better ways to 1 - advance vision/mission, 2 meet budget/profitability targets, and 3 - foster healthy values/culture. This proposed research addresses employee awareness of these three vital dimensions of performance in organizations

Cancer Chemopreventive Action by the Monomethylated Metabolite of Oltipraz

UB RISE 2023, Department of Chemistry, College of Science and Society, University of Bridgeport. Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, University of Maryland.Cancer chemoprevention involves the use of natural or synthetic compounds to reduce the risk of developing cancer or potentially inhibit the carcinogenic process. Oltipraz, 1,, is a member of a class of compounds called dithiolethiones and has been in phase II clinical trials for the prevention of aflatoxin-induced hepatocellular carcinoma. The compounds 8 and 11 have been synthesized to serve as alternative precursors to the monomethylated metabolites, 5 and 6, of the cancer chemopreventive oltipraz, 1, to test whether they possess similar biological activities. They were subsequently characterized by elemental analysis, 1H and 3C NMR spectroscopy, and two-dimensional methods. In the presence of GSH at physiological pH, precursors 8 and 11, decompose rapidly to generate the corresponding monomethylated metabolites, 5 and 6, which have been monitored by UV-visible spectrophotometer and characterized by LC-MS. The corresponding monomethylated metabolites, 5 and 6 are also generated form their oxidized precursors, 12 and 15 in the presence of GSH at physiological pH. Between two monomethylated metabolites, only 5 could be isolated and characterized by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. Treatment with "prodrugs" 8 and 11 for 48h incubation of Hepa 1c1c7 cells in culture media induce the phase 2 enzyme, quinoneoxidoreductase (NQO1) with potencies on par with oltipraz itself

UB RISE 2023, Department of Accounting, Trafz School of Business, University of Bridgeport. This study investigates whether the year of the Pandemic, political costs and executive compensation affected the quality of the reported earnings by U.S. firms in the leisure and hospitality industry during COVID-19, as this industry was the most affected by the Pandemic. The pattern of changes in the discretionary accruals was used as a proxy for the quality of reported earnings . It was examined whether this pattern changed during the year of COVID-19. An empirical analysis was conducted using financial data and multiple regression analysis for pre-pandemic and Pandemic periods. Discretionary accrual was calculated and used as the dependent variable, and the pandemic year, political costs, and executive compensation were used as the independent variables applying control variables of size, leverage, and return on asset (ROA ). Results indicated a significant positive relationship between Pan, & PR, and DA CC. No effect detected from EC

Exploring the Communication Practices of University Faculty and the Parental Expectations Regarding First-Year Students: a Mixed Methods Study

    No full text
Dissertation for Ed.D DegreeThe specific problem is that parents of first-year college students expect to be involved, want to be involved, and their involvement can help to connect an at-risk or struggling student to necessary resources, yet colleges limit communication with parents, often claiming FERPA as the reason (Bonilla, 2011; Ezarik, 2021; Fuller, 2017; Kingkade, 2017; Majeed, 2009; McGlamery, 2002; Palbusa & Gauvain, 2017; Sax, 2018; Truschel & Hoffman, 2021; US Legal, 2011; Weintraub, 2016). Whether universities are knowingly misusing FERPA to intentionally keep parents away, or to keep damaging information out of the hands of journalists and other inquirers, or if university faculty and staff are themselves misinformed about the true scope of FERPA because they’ve acted on information passed down from administrators without checking, this misrepresentation of FERPA law results in a barrier between the current state of communication between parents and the universities where their students are enrolled and the desired state of communication necessary in today’s educational landscape (Bonilla, 2011; Fuller, 2017; Hustoles, 2012; Kingkade, 2017; Truschel & Hoffman, 2021). The significance of this research study is that it can open the door to intentional and impactful student support programs for struggling first-year students that includes open communication with their parents. Not only would such programs meet the needs of parents, but they could help with student connections, academic success, and retention. This research study may also fill a research gap connecting tenets of Student Development Theory to parent involvement

Lack of central serotonin neurons produces lowered anxiety and excessive grooming in mice

    No full text
UB RISE 2023, School of Arts and Sciences/Department of Psychology, College of Science of Society, University of Bridgeport.Patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder and related conditions exhibit repetitive patterns of behavior and thought. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRis) produce symptomatic improvement in many cases. Excessive or compulsive grooming has been proposed as a behavioral model of the repetitive behaviors seen in OCD and related disorders and SSRis have been shown to reduce excessive grooming in two proposed animal models (1,2); but how these compounds help, both clinically and in the animal models, is poorly understood. A transgenic mouse was developed that lacks serotonin neurons in the central nervous system; this is achieved by cell-type specific knockout of Lmxl b, which is necessary for the development of serotoninergic neurons (3). I observed grooming in these mice at baseline and conducted a battery of behavioral tasks to assay phenotypes of potential relevance to OCD and related disorders in a small pilot study. In an initial pilot experiment, knockouts exhibited increased spray-induced grooming. These pilot data suggest that the Lmxl b mice have excessive grooming providing evidence that changes in serotonergic modulation in the central nervous system can lead to the development of OCD-like behavioral abnormalities, as well as to their pharmacological mitigation
