U.S Social Security system Safe? Population, Budget, Immigration
UB RISE 2023, Department of Finance, Ernest Trefz School of Business, University of Bridgeport. The US budget deficit is threatening the Social Security system. The recent hike in interest rate and increase in debt issuing makes the US federal Interest payment 13% of the US National Defense budget. This makes maintaining the current Social Security and Medicare payment of 40% budget more difficult. Moreover, China and India are catching up with the US GDP. China's GDP was more than 10% of the US GDP in 2000. It is more than 70% of the US GDP now. This makes US growth more difficult to compete. The US Social Security system is Un-Funded system, so all payments come from the taxes. Thus, the US needs labor force to maintain a good Social Security syste
Time/After-Time: Modes of '80s Nostalgia
UB RISE 2023, College of Science and Society, University of Bridgeport. The 80's are backl But Why? Representations of recent historical periods in popular culture are frequently explained as the effect of a mechanistic nostalgic "cycle" that is theorized to operate in 40-, 20-, or 15-year increments. Looking more closely at the variety of these representations, however, reveals a more complicated dynamic. Evaluating retro-'80s texts within the framework of this expanded taxonomy of nostalgic modes provides opportunities to look more closely at the ways in which nostalgic fantasies intermingle with political agendas, historical critiques, and constructions of contemporary subjectivity
STEM On Wheels Bus and Its Invisible Values
UB RISE 2023, Graduate School of Education, School of Engineering, College of Enegineering, Business, and Education, University of Bridgeport. The value of STEM has been recognized by most organizations and companies. Social, medical and economic life of the society seems to be improved by skills and knowledge obtained from the learning of STEM disciplines. Therefore, every institution is shopping around for the best methods of teaching. Science and STEM require several methods of learning and teaching. The University of Bridgeport (UB) developed this technic of carrying science education to the students rather having to wait until students are admitted to already existing institutions of learning. This initiative of the creation of the STEM On Wheels bus has been doing great since 2020. The STEM bus has been fulfilling its assignment of educating K-12 students. Experience has been showing the interest and excitement in students and research in the near future would show the effectiveness of this method of teaching and learning of science disciplines which should be reflected by the improved enrollments in the science disciplines
Quality of the Reported Earnings (RE) by U.S. firms During The Pandemic of 2020
UB RISE 2023, Department of Accounting, Trafz School of Business, University of Bridgeport. This study investigates whether the year of the Pandemic, political costs and executive compensation affected the quality of the reported earnings by U.S. firms in the leisure and hospitality industry during COVID-19, as this industry was the most affected by the Pandemic. The pattern of changes in the discretionary accruals was used as a proxy for the quality of reported earnings. It was examined whether this pattern changed during the year of COVID-19. An empirical analysis was conducted using financial data and multiple regression analysis for pre-pandemic and Pandemic periods. Discretionary accrual was calculated and used as the dependent variable, and the pandemic year, political costs, and executive compensation were used as the independent variables applying control variables of size, leverage, and return on asset (ROA). Results indicated a significant positive relationship between Pan, & PR, and DACC. No effect detected from EC
Homologs of Human Dengue-Resistance Genes, confer antiviral resistance in mosquitoes.
UB RISE 2023, Natural Science and Mathematics, College of Science and Society, University of Bridgeport.Dengue virus (DENV) is transmitted by mosquitoes and is a major public health concern. Our understanding of the molecular interaction of DENV with mosquito host cells is limited and we propose to expand upon the recent results from a genome-scale, small interfering RNA (siRNA)-based study that identified mammalian host proteins associated with resistance to dengue/West Nile virus (DENV/WNV) infection. The study identified 22 human DENV/WNV resistance genes (DVR) and we hypothesized that a subset would be functionally conserved in Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, imparting cellular defense against flaviviruses in this species. We identified 12 homologs of 22 human DVR genes in the Ae. aegypti genome and identified that silencing of the two candidates, AeFKBP1 and AeATCAY, homologs of human FKBP1 B and ATCAY were associated with viral increase. Depletion of AeFKBP1 or AeATCAY in vivo increased viral dissemination through the mosquito at 14 days postinfection. Our results demonstrated that AeFKBP1 and AeATCAY mediate resistance to DENV akin to what has been described for their homologs in humans. AeFKBP1 and AeATCAY provide a rare opportunity to elucidate a DENV-resistance mechanism that may be evolutionarily conserved between humans and Ae. aegypti
UDL Goes to College: Transforming the University Classroom with Universal Design for Leaming
UB RISE 2023, English Department, College of Science and Society, University of Bridgeport. The spirit of flexibility inherent in Universal Design for Learning (UDL) allows it to encompass the diversity of postsecondary educational environments. UDL-informed teaching can address what CAST refers to as "the wide variability of learners in higher ed environments" (n.d.), but it also provides an educational philosophy that is adaptable enough to apply to the wide variety of disciplines typically offered on most college campuses. UDL theory provides core principles that penetrate to the heart of any learning situation, making it a powerful framework within which to reflect on course design and teaching practice in a cross-disciplinary way. Since 2018, Goodwin University has been partnering with CAST to incorporate UDL principles into our educational practice, as well as our organizational philosophy. Over the last few years, faculty members have been immersed in UDL training, and many of the university's classes have been redesigned to anticipate and optimize learner variability. Throughout this process, we have fostered a campus-wide conversation about inclusivity in teaching and learning, and we have challenged ourselves to reimagine higher education for the twenty-first century. This chart, modeled after CAST's UDL Guidelines matrix, indicates some of the ways that Goodwin professors have adapted UDL principles into their teaching to address a variety of educational challenges across a wide spectrum of disciplines
Anatomical Variation of the Abductor Pollicis Longus
UB RISE 2023, College of Health Sciences, School of Chiropractic, University of Bridgeport. There are three muscles in the forearm that are primarily responsible for creating what's known as the typical "hitchhiker's thumb" appearance. These muscles are the abductor pollicis longus (APL), extensor pollicis brevis (EPB), and extensor pollicis longus (EPL) and they are collectively referred to as the "outcropping" muscles. Additionally, a fourth muscle in the hand called the abductor pollicis brevis (APB) also assists in creating this classic movement.
Anatomical variants in any of these four muscles may be important for understanding the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of several conditions, including de Quervain's tenosynovitis and intersection syndrome
Teachers’ Perceptions of the Impact of Rapid Transition to Online Learning as a Result of COVID-19 in Spring of 2020
The purpose of this qualitative case study is to better understand K-12 teachers' lived experiences and challenges as they made a rapid shift to online delivery in response to state and federal regulations relating to the COVID-19 outbreak in the spring of 2020. Aside from that, the purpose of this study is to determine whether or not instructors believe that online instruction is a feasible delivery option for achieving the district's goal of retaining students' engagement with and knowledge of assigned curricular content in K-12 education. Undoubtedly, the teacher is the first to feel this in their class and when teaching their students. Their procedural research builds confidence and promotes the teacher’s ideas and creativity. It also boosts the teacher’s thinking skills, ambitions, and aspirations, creating a productive knowledge generation to compete locally and globally. The effects of this pandemic on schools and how the experience may inspire an overhaul of the American education system are essential to consider

Business Intelligence Adoption: A Literature Review and Model Exploration
Purpose: Synthesize a new model of Business Intelligence adoption factors, driven by four key variables:
1-Executive Management Influence,
2-Individual Intention,
3-Technology,
4-Organization.
The research seeks to identify new insights from existing publications in factors impacting adoption of Business Intelligence (“BI") through a systematic literature review. The research is comprehensive and review centric, covering over 80 scholarly publications from highly reputable sources, including:
-International Journal of Information Management,
-MIS Quarterly,
-Decision Support Systems.
Practical implications: The research is important because BI systems provide immense benefits to organizations who adopt modern BI tools (Acheampong & Moyaid, 2016). BI systems provide an ability to make fast decisions with the most up to date information available. This increased speed to insight results in greater profitability, enhanced competitive advantage, and improved decision making capabilities. However, limited research exists on the factors affecting adopting BI (Acheampong & Moyaid, 2016). The current research will challenge existing theories of BI adoption, synthesize recent advances, and expand existing models in the field through a systematic literature review and empirical study (Puklavec, Oliveira, & Popovič, 2018), (Lee, 2010), (Ain, Vaia, DeLone, & Waheed, 2019)
