Standardizing the Chiropractic Technique Curriculum: Consensus Results of Two Inter-Collegiate Workshops
No full textObjective: A summary is presented of the consensus opinions of two inter-collegiate workshops that sought to develop a standardized chiropractic technique program. Methods: The authors of this study facilitated small groups of attendees tasked with answering seed statements at workshops held during Association of Chiropractic Colleges - Research Agenda Conferences in 2014 and 2016. Results: Attendees agreed that it was acceptable to rely on clinical experience and patient preference when providing patient care, even in the absence of rigorous research evidence, provided procedures are safe and biological plausible. Selection of curricular content should not be based on tradition or ritualistic dogma alone, which sometimes appears to be the case. Licensing bodies should not be involved in this process. Attendees also agreed that diagnostic procedures either do or should include: static and motion palpation, postural and gait analysis, joint springing palpation, ranges of motion testing and functional (orthopedic) muscle testing. There was no consensus with respect to teaching leg length analysis, x-ray film line marking analysis and spinal temperature instrumentation readings for subluxation determination

intervention programs focusing on literacy education for preschool children from low income, working-class families, especially in urban areas. Preschool teachers also need improved training in early literacy skills-building and professional development to
acquire proficiency in early literacy education. This qualitative multiple case study
explored the operative elements of a new professional development program framed by
transformative learning theory that may transform teaching practices by motivating urban
preschool teachers to use shared book reading strategies to promote early literacy for
their students

No full textAssessment of the leadership traits of college students is important, especially since the enhancement of these traits has been known to lead to success in college and the workplace. This study determined the significance of factors influencing the leadership potential of both business and non-business students at three universities, including one in midland China. The survey (N = 714) in this study measured the attitudinal construct of perceived personal control from Robinson and Hunt’s 1991 entrepreneurial attitude orientation model. Results indicated that student characteristics and entrepreneurial experience were found to be significantly related to the perceived personal control attitude variable
Sex Trafficking Awareness among Emergency Department Staff and Healthcare Providers
No full textHuman sex trafficking is a major public health problem, both internationally and domestically. Children, youth, and adults, a majority of whom are women and young girls, are sex trafficked into and throughout the United States each day. These victims, who are forced into the commercial sex trade show signs of abuse, malnourishment, and have symptoms including headaches, infections, bruising, broken bones, and potential substance abuse issues. With limited access to healthcare, these victims end up in emergency room departments while still in captivity. Research shows that sex trafficking victims are infrequently identified in emergency departments and in other healthcare settings. Although sex trafficking is a growing epidemic, there is little research to support that emergency room staff and healthcare providers have training on sex trafficking and victim identification
Grid-based Model for Recovery of Lost Connectivity in Wireless Sensor and Actor Network
Get PDFWireless Sensor and Actor Networks (WSAN) are basically a collection of actors and sensors collaborating via a wireless medium to perform designated tasks. Maintaining inter-actor connectivity is critical to a WSAN, as failure at one point may result in communication loss amongst nodes or in a network disjoint. To recover from an actor node failure, optimal re-localization and coordination techniques should be in place. However, existing recovery schemes suffer from high degrees of actor node relocation overhead as well as network overhead. In this paper, we introduce a Grid-based Mathematical Model for efficient Actor Recovery by Determining Forwarding Capacity (GMMFC). The proposed model aims to provide effective monitoring and actor failure detection mechanism supported by an efficient actor recovery algorithm. GMMFC presents an innovative concept in actor node recovery while proposing improvements in WSAN QoS performance using RSSI Message information. The proposed solution is compared with state-of-the-art algorithms. The experimental results manifest better performance over delay, throughput, packet delivery ratio, energy consumption as well as for messages exchanged between sensor and actor nodes. Thus, the proposed model demonstrates improvements in QoS parameters

Wallerian Degeneration Surveyed in Poliomyelitis
No full textPoliomyelitis is a highly infectious disease rendering varying degrees of respiratory illness, gastroenteritis, malaise and potentially severe forms of paralysis. Infection is generated by a virus belonging in the Picornaviridae family. This enterovirus infects the human body most often through the fecal-oral route and proliferates within the mucosa of the pharynx and gastrointestinal tract. The virus ordinarily invades the lymphoid tissue and enters the bloodstream where it may enter the central nervous system and infect motor neurons in the ventral horn of the spinal cord and brainstem. Replication of the virus within the motor neurons induces neuronal cell death and axonal degeneration, resulting in the denervation of skeletal muscle and the subsequent manifestation of poliomyelitis. Patients with poliomyelitis will experience asymmetric muscle atrophy and flaccid paralysis. Here, we report on a case of a 67 year old male cadaver with poliomyelitis discovered during a routine cadaveric dissection in the gross anatomy lab at the University of Bridgeport
