Sensor-Based Assistive Devices for Visually-Impaired People: Current Status, Challenges, and Future Directions
The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that there are 285 million visually impaired people worldwide. Among these individuals, there are 39 million who are totally blind. There have been several systems designed to support visually-impaired people and to improve the quality of their lives. Unfortunately, most of these systems are limited in their capabilities. In this paper, we present a comparative survey of the wearable and portable assistive devices for visuallyimpaired people in order to show the progress in assistive technology for this group of people. Thus, the contribution of this literature survey is to discuss in detail the most significant devices that are presented in the literature to assist this population and highlight the improvements, advantages, disadvantages, and accuracy. Our aim is to address and present most of the issues of these systems to pave the way for other researchers to design devices that ensure safety and independent mobility to visually-impaired people.https://doi.org/10.3390/s1703056
An 8-bit Low Power Energy Recovery Full Adder Design
With the development of wireless communication and portable electronic products, circuit power consumption has become the critical bottleneck of the VLSI design. Among the low power VLSI designs, adiabatic circuit shows a promising future and has been studied by many researchers. As a newly emerged low power technique, adiabatic circuits can be implemented with different architectures such as PAL, 2N-2N2P, ECRL, and CAL, etc. They all lead to significant power saving. In this paper, we implemented true single-phase energy-recovering logic (TSEL) in PSPICE to build a 8-bit low power full adder. In order to verify the power saving of the adiabatic design, a traditional 8-bit static CMOS full adder is also designed in PSPICE for reference. PSPICE power simulation is used to simulate the power consumption of both full adder designs for the same given input pattern sequence. PSPICE power simulation result shows that TSEL full adder lead to effective power saving compared to conventional CMOS full adder. The adiabatic design also shows good potential to be used in high speed circuit design
Heating Oil Level Detection and Assistance Using Amazon Alexa
This work is used to bridge the gap between consumer and oil supplier by building a smart monitoring system with the help of ESP8266 (Wi-Fi module) and Alexa (Intelligent AI based Virtual Assistant). In the existing system, many oil tanks are inaccessible or buried under the ground. We came up with the solution of having a smart monitoring system where there is no longer need to read the oil level in the heating oil tank manually. It can be done with the help of an ultrasonic sensor. When the consumer requests to check the oil level, ESP8266 retrieves the oil level from the ultrasonic sensor and sends it to Alexa
Know Your Audience: Effectively Communicating the Results of a Pre-engineering Program
A female’s college and career goals may ultimately be restricted by declining interest and achievement in mathematics that originates during her pre-high school years. This researcher examined how a piloted pre-engineering program in one eighth grade middle school team impacted adolescent girls’ interest and achievement in mathematics. The results suggest that Project Lead The Way (PLTW) impacted both boys’ and girls’ interest and achievement in mathematics. In five of seven attitude scales, PLTW hada positive effect on gender that was not paralleled in the control group. When achievement was considered, differences in growth levels between the two groups were statistically significant in six of the 11 standards in the experimental group. As this educational research was undertaken to assist local decision makers in supporting or opposing a district adoption of PLTW for all middle school students, effectively communicating the results to the various stakeholders in an engaging, useful manner was paramount
Upper Extremity Prosthetics: Designing A Life Without Limits
When you’re a kid you don’t think very much about how your body grows, it just does. Sometimes you may get a little taller or stronger but you never think very far beyond that point - unless you have to wear a prosthetic. The question of how children that wear prosthetic limbs keep up with their ever-changing bodies as they grow into adulthood is what sparked our curiosity and led us to research the multifaceted prosthetics industry for this thesis project. We wanted to see if there was a socially, fiscally, and environmentally responsible solution to this problem and if not, what we could do to help
JetBlue v. Delta: Battle of the Baggage
Lost and damaged luggage has always been an issue for millions of travelers. Of those millions of travel claims, what is the likelihood of being reimbursed for lost or damaged luggage? This research examined travel claims data reported to the Transportation Security Association (TSA) from the Department of Homeland Security. The data was used to measure how effective airlines, more specifically JetBlue and Delta, are at responding to and resolving customer claims. The goal of this research was to help travelers select an airline with a higher probability of solving their travel claims in the event their luggage does become lost or damaged
