    The purpose of this study was to assess if registered dental hygienists perform thorough and complete extraoral and intraoral assessments for cancer detection through the use of palpation techniques, visualization and adjunctive screening devices. Our goal was to assess if these exams are being performed routinely and thoroughly, and if not, what possible barriers to regular exams may exist. This study will determine if registered dental hygienists perform thorough and complete extra oral and intra oral assessments for cancer detection. If there is a lack of performance of extra oral and intra oral assessments, it is essential to determine the barriers that are preventing the hygienist from performing them. This information will be generalizable to all RDH’s

    Making Middle School Reading Intervention More Meaningful For Students and Teachers Through Team Teaching: Action Research

    This Qualitative Action Research explored an alternative approach to deliver reading interventions using a team teaching (co-teaching) push in support model for middle school students that was delivered by both an English (Ela) teacher and a reading teacher during an extended instructional block. This action research consisted of two phases of research beginning with a case study that was conducted using a retrospective analysis of one school district’s reading intervention practices and English language arts program across three middle schools. The researcher co- constructed and implemented a pilot which included a team taught push in reading model through an extended intervention block. The researcher reviewed the genesis and implementation of a pilot push in team teaching instructional model and completed a reflective process of the implementation. The researcher collected and analyzed data sources from teachers and administration from the pilot. This exploratory action research explored Ela teacher’s, reading teacher’s and administration’s perceptions of the push in team teaching pilot program as a component of an Ela instructional framework and as a possible intervention model for adolescent readers who require reading support. Teachers reflected on the process of team teaching as it coincided with the redefinition of the Ela curriculum and instructional model (Erickson, 2000; Erickson, 2007; Erickson & Lanning, 2014; Lanning, 2013). The researcher used the results of the retrospective case study and information from the pilot year in Phase I to build a professional learning cycle (intervention) that is presented in Phase II. The professional learning intervention consisted of five professional learning cycles that were implemented during the second iteration of the push in team teaching model. The research concluded with an ethnographic reflection of the change process at a system level and reflected on the use of action research as a tool for educational leaders

    Argumentative Writing Through a 21st Century Framework: An Action Research Study

    This Action Research study examined the implementation of integrated writing as originally described by MacArthur, Graham & Schwartz (1993) in order to investigate (a) seventh-grade English-Language Arts students' argumentative writing productions and demonstration of cognitive complexity on a blog site, and (b) the teacher’s ability to refine instructional planning strategies that impact student learning. This study aimed to impact teacher practice and student learning through writing interventions and reflective planning. Qualitative and quantitative data were collected to analyze the instructional strategies of integrated writing that influenced student argumentative writing, student feedback and teacher reflection. The researcher was referred to as the teacher-researcher throughout the dissertation because the researcher was the teacher in the seventh-grade classroom. This study was designed around argumentative writing theories that emphasized students' collaborative efforts in an online blogging forum. Two, four-week iterations of instruction guided by the intervention and data analysis produced data supportive of teachers utilizing integrated writing in their classrooms, primarily teachers using conferences to support students with individualized instruction during the drafting process of writing. The findings of this Action Research Study indicated that intervention instruction should focus on the ideational epistemology of writing and synthesis in cognitive complexity while giving students the opportunity to collaborate on argumentative blogs

    Automatic Gait Balance Detection System

    Falls are one of the major causes of injury in elderly people over 65 years. Each year, 2.5 million people are treated for a serious fall injury. In addition to the fall there is the delay in receiving assistance. Researchers have developed three methodologies to detect falls: image/video processing by implementing cameras and trackers, acoustic recognition using floor and wall sensors and by analysis of wearable sensors. Fall detection using smartphones has also been proposed in the past. A smartphone may have many constraints due to which a wearable device is a much more viable option for such a critical issue. This poster aims to suggest an effective way to detect falls by using a wearable device of which the major components are: 3-axial accelerometer, Arduino Uno, and GPS-GSM device. Apart from that, a buzzer is also integrated to notify people nearby for assistance. The location of the wearable device also affects the acceleration and the result of fall and motion detection. Although the wrist is the most common body part for any wearable device, the acceleration signal may vary widely. It is efficient to place the device in areas of least movement like a knee or waist

    Moving From Making Money to Creating Wealth

    By changing two rules, albeit drastically, U.S. stock markets can be transformed from a volatile casino for the few to a stable and reliable wealth-creation machine for the many. Currently, money can be made if the price of a share changes in either direction. It is in every trader’s (extremely) short-term interest to keep the prices changing. The idea presented here is to slow the fall of a stock’s price so that the market can soberly evaluate the true worth of a share. We hope to begin a conversation that will allow investors to realize that their long-term interest lies in a stable market, immune from shocks, rather than a market resembling a frantic casino. It turns out that by applying the proposed rules to a fictitious stock index made of 36 randomly chosen stocks that are traded on the NYSE, the recession from 2007 – 2010 would probably not have occurred. This “T2” or “TSQ” index (named for the authors) almost exactly mirrors the DJIA and S&P indexes during the same period. (We suspect that any randomly chosen stocks would also mirror the DJIA and S&P.) Companies that suffered greatly, either from being swept up in the selling frenzy in October 2008 or from being poorly managed, will still suffer but much more slowly. Money can still be made by shorting over-priced stocks but not as quickly. Overnight fortunes can still be made, but not by betting on price changes

    Behavioral Despair in the Talmud: New Solutions to Millenium-Old Legal Problems

    We solve two "unsolvable" (teyku) problems from the Talmud that had remained unsolved for about one and a half thousand years despite massive and nearly continuous commentary and analysis throughout the centuries. The Talmudic problems concern the implied decision-making of farmers who have left some scattered fruit behind, and the alleged impossibility of knowing whether they would return for given amounts of fruit over given amounts of land area if we aware of their behavior at exactly one point. We solve the problems by formalizing the Talmudic discussion and expressing five natural economic and mathematical assumptions that are also eminently reasonable in the original domain. If we also allow a sixth assumption regarding the farmer’s minimum wage, we can solve two other related unsolvable problems

    The pressure vessels are used to hold gases or liquids at high pressures. The current studies of pressure vessels indicate that there are some cases of cracked or damaged vessels that can cause rupture or leakage failures which can result in fatal accidents in industry. Since the leaking vessel can cause potential health and safety hazards, the proper design of pressure vessels in agreement with the safety codes and standards is important to human safety and health. This paper focuses on design and development of the pressure vessel using computer aided modeling, computational simulation, and prototype testing to determine the parameters including maximum safe operating pressure, total material deformation, wind velocity streamlines, and wind pressure distribution to assist the pressure vessel design
