    Maximizing Years Lived Disease Free

    No full text
College of Health Sciences UB Rise 2025Since prehistoric times, humans have had to maintain the ability to be active and move to escape predators, search for food and secure shelter. Agricultural production and industrial revolutions throughout history further required humans to be active and relatively fit. The 20th century marked an era of industrial production from advanced machines and technology that all but eliminated human labor. This change resulted in decreased physical activity causing devastating outcomes to individual and public health outcomes. Industrialization has further impacted human health by the over production of calorically dense, nutrient poor food products that have negative health outcomes such as metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, obesity, poor brain health and unhealthy aging

UB Rise 2025 Department of Electrical and Computer EngineeringAutonomous navigation in new environments remains a challenge for modern vehicles due to conventional locomotion constraints. This research introduces an Omni-Directional Multi-Sensor Map Building System that integrates LiDAR and an Intel RealSense RGB-D camera with advanced SLAM techniques to enhance mapping accuracy, perception, and obstacle detection. A novel data fusion strategy combines depth and point cloud data, improving resolution and environmental awareness. Designed for challenging conditions, the system ensures accurate localization even in feature-sparse, poorly lit, or reflective environments. Powered by a Jetson Xavier NX and ROS, it processes sensor data in real time and controls omnidirectional motion via Mecanum wheels, enabling smooth navigation over complex terrains. Extensive testing validates its ability to generate high-resolution maps and maintain localization in scenarios where traditional SLAM systems struggle. This work highlights the advantages of multi-sensor integration for robust and reliable autonomous navigation

    No full text
UB Rise 2025 College of Science and Society Department of ChemistryLuteolin and apigenin contents in the solid dosage form of dietary supplements were analyzed simultaneously using reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) with a photodiode array (PDA) detector. A C18 column was used as the packing material in the HPLC column, with tetrahydrofuran and isopropanol (70:30:5) employed as the mobile phase. Detection was carried out at a wavelength of 360 nm using PDA detection. The recovery of the method ranged from 96.5% to 101.9%, and the assay demonstrated linearity at concentrations ranging from 5 to 250 µg/mL, with a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.9998. This robust analytical method is suitable for use in quality control laboratories for the simultaneous analysis of luteolin and apigenin in solid dosage formulations of dietary supplements

Exploring teachers’ perception on the pathway to the seal of biliteracy: impact of understanding proficiency-based instruction

    No full text
UB Rise 2025 School of Education, Educational Leadership ProgramLearning languages is a necessity. All students have the right to learn languages and access the gift of language proficiency to effectively communicate with others. Over time, world language instruction has transitioned from traditional grammar-based models toward proficiency-based instruction, thematic curriculum design, and performance-based assessment (Shrum & Glisan, 2016; Ritz & Sherf, 2023). This switch to proficiency-based instruction has increased the need to know whether world language teachers are prepared for this shift from grammar-based to proficiency-based instruction. This shift is now more relevant since the implementation in Connecticut of the Seal of Biliteracy (SoBL) in 2017. The purpose of this research was to explore world language teachers’ perceptions regarding their efficacy levels of understanding proficiency-based instruction and assessments that increase students’ proficiency. Furthermore, this study investigated teachers’ experiences related to what world language teachers consider the most effective instruction that supports students on their pathway to achieve the SoBL via the AAPPL examination. The study sought to collect information from world language teachers in an urban district in the state of Connecticut

Truth Wars: Creating Mutually Agreeable Policies for Prosperity in a Diverse Society

    No full text
UB Rise PostersConsidering the contrastive world views on truth, this study suggests a customized framework that creates common grounds to meet global needs. Prosperity is the ultimate goal of policies and according to Schindler (2017), prosperity focuses on people, policy, and place. Therefore, it is the primary measurement tool, determined by the Legatum Prosperity Index and influenced by Adam Smith's "The Wealth of Nations." The study suggests specific recommendations guided by economic prosperity and social well-being of countries. Modernist growth theory encourages economically struggling nations to embrace individualism, utilitarianism, and democratic governance with almost no government interference. Postmodernism theory encourages socially struggling countries to adopt equity by wealth redistribution, inclusion and social justice. This study encompasses customized policies that set common ground to represent the truth with the use of two different world views, modernism, and postmodernism

What Do Special Ed Teachers Who Prepare Students For College Know About Disability Laws After High School ?

    No full text
UB Rise PosterDisabled students experience significantly worse post-school outcomes than their non-disabled peers. IEPs end after high school, and postsecondary education follows different laws related to disability access. RQs: Is there a relationship between a secondary special educator's knowledge of postsecondary disability laws and the number of pre-service courses completed by the educator that focused on special education transition? The number of hours that the educator has participated in past professional development opportunities related to special education transition? The number of years of special education teaching experience the educator has completed

"An Experience of the Impossible": The Planetary Imagination in Goerges Melies's A Trip to the Moon

UB Rise 2024, English Department, College of Science and Society, University of BridgeportIn Georges Melies's masterpiece, A Trip to the Moon, one of the first spectacles that the astronomer-adventurers encounter is the image of Earth rising above the horizon. The scene in Melies's 1902 fantasy film is an uncanny foreshadow of two of the most famous photographs in human history, Earthrise and Blue Marble. Indeed, the illusion of this impossible anachronism may rank as the most astonishing magic trick in A Trip to the Moon. The image of Earth from space evokes the critical question of what it means to consider human existence on a planetary scale, a question that began to take a newly urgent form in Melies's time and that continues to haunt modern audiences. Gayatri Chakrovarty Spivak (2003) argues that planetarity constitutes "an experience of the impossible." In a "Special Topics" film class, UB students examined Melies's film for insights about what Lisa Messeri (2016) calls "The planetary imagination.
