Development of OSA Event Detection Using Threshold Based Automatic Classification
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a very serious sleeping disorder resulting in the temporary blockage of the airflow airway that can be deadly if left untreated. OSA is not a rare condition; in the US, from 18 to 50 million people, most of them remain undiagnosed due to cost, cumbersome and resource limitations of overnight polysomnography (PSG) at sleep labs. Instead, automated, at-home devices that patients can simply use while asleep seem to be very attractive and highly on-demand. Carbon Nanotube-based Ultra-sensitive Breath Acetone Sensor for Non-invasive Diabetes Diagnosis
In this project, the design and theoretical analysis of an ultra-high sensitive breath acetone sensor based on carbon nanotube (CNT) structure is proposed. In this device, a carbon nanotube is anchored to a substrate in one end, and the other end is coated by -WO3. As a ferroelectric material, -WO3 has high selectivity in acetone absorption. The end tip of carbon nanotube is coated with -WO3 material to absorb minute acetone molecules in breath sample. Piezoelectric activation is used to activate the vibration of carbon nanotube cantilever structure. When acetone molecules are absorbed by the coated -WO3, the resonant frequency of the cantilever will be changed for a certain amount. By sensing this certain resonant frequency change, the existence of a single acetone molecule can be detected. A theoretical model is developed to describe the vibration of the carbon nanotube cantilever structure. The resonant frequency change of the cantilever due to attached mass is analyzed. The proposed breath acetone sensor can achieve extremely high sensitivity in molecular level. It can be potentially used for non-invasive diabetic's diagnosis, which leads to a quick, convenient, accurate and painless breath diagnosis of diabetics

Design of Residential Hydrogen Fueling System in UB Bodine Hall
Pollution and emission from the burning fossil fuel already became a serious environmental issue. To solve this problem, more and more green energy or renewable energy has been used into and impact onto modern society. For instance, solar energy, hydrogen, and wind turbine gradually play an important role in manufactory industry. Using hydrogen fueling system for the residential is good for environments, because the students whose live in dormitory have their own cars. If those cars are hydrogen car, they can use the fueling system to supply the hydrogen to the cars. They do not have to go the hydrogen gas station to gas the hydrogen. And using hydrogen is more eco friendly than using the burning fossil. This design is to produce hydrogen for the hydrogen cars belonged to the residents of Bodine Hall, a dormitory at the UB, through a solar energy powered system. In this design, a Proton-Exchange-Membrane (PEM) eletrolyzer is used as a hydrogen generator, solar panels are used to convert solar energy to electricity for electrolyzer, and a hydrogen compressor system is used to compress hydrogen and store it

The earlier researches in cylindrical rectangular patch and conformal microstrip array are summarized. The effect of curvature on the conformal Microstrip antenna patch on conical and spherical surfaces is studied. Some new flexible antenna is given for different frequencies. Finally, simulation software is used to study the effect of the curvature on the input impedance, return loss, voltage standing wave ratio, and resonance frequency
Interaction of Chromium with Nickel in the Induction of Sister Chromatid Exchanges, in Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells
Epidemiological studies report that populations exposed to complex mixtures show increased incidence rates of cancer. Therefore, chemical interaction is of major concern in the assessment of risk by regulatory agencies. In this study, treatment of CHO (Chinese Hamster Ovary) cells with nickel chloride (in 1.0 and 5.0 uM), or sodium chromate (0.5, 1.0, and 2.5 uM) induce sister chromatid exchanges (SCE) in a dose dependent fashion. Statistical analysis of the interaction factor, show that the combined treatments of nickel ( 1.0 and 0.5 uM) with chromium (0.5, 1.0 and 2.5 uM) interacted antagonistically for the induction of SCE. Previously, we reported that nickel with chromium, with UV light and with X-rays interacted antagonistically for the induction of SCE and MN (micronuclei) in human peripheral lymphocytes. These observations indicate that heavy metals, such as nickel and chromium, present in complex mixtures, may reduce the response, even in the presence of strong SCE or MN inducers, and may lead, therefore, to an underestimate of chemical exposure as assessed by these assays.
