    The Ethnomedical Practices of the Keetoowah traditional Cherokees: Current Clinical Implications University of Bridgeport Seed Grant Award

    Keetoowah Cherokee medicine has never been documented, and the Western Band of Cherokees (Tahlequah, OK) have kept the traditions of the Keetoowahs through the bloodline of Redbird Smith. Crosslin F. Smith is the grandson of Redbird, and a well respected and international educator and practitioner of traditional Keetoowah Cherokee Medicine. Dr. Noé has been practicing Cherokee Medicine under Elder Smith's tutelage for 25 years. In Elder Smith's practice (Vian, OK) he treats native peoples with plants, rituals and prayers for such diseases as cancer without any western medicine applications (many native peoples refusing any western medical care). This research project is to collect botanical specimen that are used by Elder Smith and from the sites he collects from in OK. The collection is housed at UBCNM's new Medicinal Plant Herbarium. The new Herbarium is housed on the 6th floor of the HSC building, room 608. The University of Bridgeport Seed Grant Award financed the herbarium equipment, botanical field equipment and one collection trip to Vian, OK in July 2011

    Hand pose detection is one of the new important research fields, especially because of its applications in the field of human machine interaction. It benefits deaf and mute people, who cannot use voice recognition systems. The main target of this paper is to design an intelligent, autonomous system that can be used for hand pose detection. The input to the system is from Microsoft Kinect's sensor for depth and color images, and the output is the hand pose that optimally matches the hand in the input image

    Selective Manipulation of Nanoparticles in Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) using Magnetotactic Bacteria

    Magnetotactic bacteria are a group of prokaryotic cells that orient and migrate along the geomagnetic field lines for their physiological functions and anaerobic/microaerophilic requirements. We report the use of magnetotaxis i.e. sensitivity towadrs megnetic field of Magnetospirillum magneticum as a functional component in very large scale integration (VLSI) design and fabrication. It is known that magnetotaxis arises out of a chain of magnetic nanoparticles within the bacterial cell that acts as a dipole. We propose a simple MATLAB based analysis and modeling of magnetic field acting on the chain of nanoparticles around a current carrying microwire. COMSOL was used to design the appropriate solenoid mesh containing the microwires.Our simulation results show that it is possible to manipulate the bacteria as "skilled workers" to transport select nanoparticles conducive to microchip fabrication. The use of magnetotactic bacteria may lead to the design of biomolecule based transformative integrated circuits well below the current feature size

This interdisciplinary initiative is intended to improve the practices of STEM teachers, result in improved interest in STEM careers in K-12 schools, and develop a robust collaborative relationship between STEM departments and education departments.     Dichotomy of Chinese Domestic and Overseas IPOs

    Due to regulatory constraints, many Chinese companies pursue overseas listings in HongKong and U.S. without being first listed in the domestic market. Some of them have, often after many years, eventually returned to the mainland by offering A-shares to domestic investors. This unique feature of cross-listed Chinese stocks provides a natural experiment field to test conventional IPO theories, which suggest less underpricing in homebound IPOs.Using a sample of Chinese IPOs made from 1990 to 2007, we find that substantial underpricing still prevails in homecoming IPOs by those already listed abroad, with an average first-day return of 96.38%. After control for firm size and potential selfselection bias, these IPOs do not differ on the first day of trading than purely domestic offerings. The hot short-run performance in their A-share debuts is in sharp contrast to what they experienced in their overseas listings: The mean first-day return is merely 5.75% for their ADRs and 11.55% for their Hong Kong IPOs

    A New Model of the Lifetime of Wireless Sensor Networks in Sea Water Communications

    In this paper we present a new model for the lifetime of wireless sensor networks used for sea water communications. The new model for power communications takes into consideration parameters such as power consumption for the active mode, power consumption for the sleep mode, power consumption for the transient mode, transmission period, transient mode duration, sleep mode duration, and active mode duration. The power communications model is incorporated in the life time model of wireless sensor networks. The life time model takes into consideration several parameters such as the total number of sensors, network size, percentage of sink nodes, location of sensors, the mobility of sensors, power consumption when nodes move and the power consumption of communications. The new model for power consumption in communications shows more accurate results about the lifetime of the sensor network in comparison with previously published results
