Stress and Autoimmunity – A Complicated Picture
This thesis is being archived as a Digitized Shelf Copy for campus access to current students and staff only. We currently cannot provide this open access without the author's permission. If you are the author of this work and desire to provide it open access or wish access removed, please contact the Wahlstrom Library to discuss permission. With such a high prevalence of autoimmune disease in the United States, it is of utmost importance to gain a better understanding of the autoimmune disease process in order to clearly outline not only disease treatment but also prevention of the disease process. This research examines the factors involved in the development of autoimmunity. Among these factors are psychological stress, glucocorticoid resistance, overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines and an imbalance of Th17 and T regulatory cells. Comprehending the sequence of actions, interactions and reactions in aforementioned pathways is essential in discovering therapeutic interventions for autoimmune disease treatment and prevention
Yours Truly: The Practice of Writing Letters
Is letter-writing dead? Has the internet killed it? In “Yours Truly,” Eric D. Lehman finds that while the style may be changing, the form of correspondence known as a letter is alive and well. Just as a conversation is more than delivering news, expressing your thoughts to a reader fully and completely, whether on paper or on an electronic screen, transcends the mere message in both its intention and effect. And even though the resulting letters are personal documents usually intended for one reader, they can be considered literature just as readily as an autobiography or personal essay
Object Tracking Using Autonomous Quad Copter
This work explains an approach to implement an autonomous ball catching quad copter by combining object detection and trajectory calculations. To accomplish this, a quad copter is used to autonomously catch a ball by dynamically calculating trajectory and the interception point using two Kinects. This approach is tested in a two-step process. First successful test is done on a flat surface (table) and the second test is done in the air
Analysis of A Counter Flow Parallel-Plate Heat Exchanger
Heat exchangers are used widely in many industries for heat recovery or
cooling purposes. This paper developed a numerical model to simulate a
counter flow parallel heat exchanger. A representative repeating unit cell
of the multi-channeled heat exchanger was taken as the computational
domain, which includes a cold channel and a hot channel separated by
plates. The model was simulated in COMSOL for an oil to water heat
exchanger. Higher temperature oil and relatively lower temperature
water entered two separate parallel channels in opposite directions. The
detailed distributions of temperature, velocity, and pressure were used to
analyze the performance of the heat exchanger. It was found the model
can be used to provide guidance for designing an optimal heat exchanger
Net Income vs. Cash Flow Analysis: Improving Misleading Financial Reporting
Standard GAAP accrual accounting protocols can contain misleading (and even fraudulent) information because of certain long-acknowledged interpretations required in constructing financial statements. The occurrence of defaults and bankruptcies in recent years has become a serious problem for regulators, investors, lenders and creditors. This poster reviews an alternative document - the statement of cash flows - that inherently is less prone to manipulation and misinterpretation. The research suggested is to compare various failed company profit and loss results just prior to the incident, to the cash flow statement results for the same period
Fabrication of Electrospun Composite Nanofibers and Their Application in Early Detection of Femtogram C- reactive protein (CRP)
The methodology for developing a protein biosensor has been presented and it focuses on the use of carbon nanotubes and polymer nanofibers based nano composites that have been electrospun in the form of “nanowebs”. These nanowebs have been surface modified to function as sensors for detecting C-reactive protein(CRP). Detection sensitivity of CRP was achieved in the femtogram/mL regime from phosphate buffered saline solutions and in human serum. The designed biosensor is three orders more sensitive than ELISA. Sensitivity enhancement was achieved by tuning the charge transduction at the solid /liquid interface on the nanoweb matrix
Mean Reversion of Natural Gas Prices
Dr. Lewis and Wenyang Fang's poster discussing the mean reversion of the price of natural gas
Asymmetric Information and IPO Size of Newly Listed Chinese Companies
We build a model of an IPO for firms with private information about their earnings profile over time and test the model’s predictions using a complete sample of newly listed Chinese companies between 1992 and 2007. The model predicts that IPO size is positively correlated with short-term operating performance that is not directly consistent with traditional theories. It also provides an explanation for negative correlation between debt and profitability that is not consistent with standard trade-off theory or signaling theory. The empirical results provide strong support for our model
