    Gestational Diabetes and the Role of Specific Nutrients and Herbs

This study looked at the research for effectiveness and action in diabetes mellitus type II, as well as specific dose safety for use during pregnancy. The main goal was to find effective treatments for gestational diabetes, in addition to the standard low carbohydrate diet and exercise prescribed. Basic procedures – The database used was The University of Bridgeport’s digital library Eureka! Papers were chosen that were available in full text, that were published in the past 20 years and that used monosupplementation. Main Findings – Cinnamon showed the ability to act as an insulin sensitizer and lower HgA1c. Chromium showed possible effects of increasing insulin receptor sensitivity. Momordica charantia increased the speed of glucose uptake in a dose dependent form. Gymnema sylvestre increased insulin secretion from the pancreas and showed comparable antioxidant effects to that of alpha-tocopherol reducing triglyceride and LDL cholesterol levels and increasing glutathione and HDL levels. Alpha lipoic acid showed antioxidant actions and has the capability to reduce and prevent diabetic polyneuropathies. Principal conclusions – Momordica, chromium and alpha lipoic acid are all very safe and should be used during gestational diabetes. Cinnamon should be used only in amounts used in cooking i.e. ½-1 tsp daily. Gymnema should be used with caution if at all and should be taken only in its whole form perhaps as an aqueous infusion

    Iced Bio-Bandage Design for Skin Burns

    In this paper a new model for a burns biobandage is introduced not only as a protective means but also as a treatment technique by helping the tissue to rebuild itself as fast as possible. The main objective of this research is to develop a simple cryotherapeutic system to reduce the temperature of the burned tissues to normal temperature of the human body in order to facilitate the tissue healing and regeneration process. A biobandage is proposed to include an iced layer as a cooling source, a cotton layer and a water gel layer for comfort and temperature control, and a plastic layer to seal the ice layer. The optimal combination of these four layers physically work together to reduce inflammation, which in turn makes the heeling or recovery time shorter and reduces pain as a result of decreasing the nerve conductivity. The COMSOL Multiphysics was used to model the cooling process on burned tissue using the proposed iced-biobandage. A modeling analysis was performed to examine the changes of temperature over a predetermined time and to help in identifying the optimal period for ice cooling process

    Portable Particulate Matter (PM) Sensor for Air Pollution Monitoring

    Atomospheric particulate matter (PM) are tiny airborne pollutants floating in the air. They come from construction materials, dust, smoking, cooking, automobile exhaust, charcoal power plant, etc. Particulate matter pollutants are potential threat to human health. Particulate matters with diameter of 2.5μm or less are called PM2.5 and they are especially harmful for human respiratory system. They can penetrate into deeper part of lungs and human body does not have a mechanism to repel them out. Long term exposure to high concentration of PM2.5 leads to mesothelioma, lung cancer, bronchitis, heart attacks and many other diseases. Air pollution is also becoming a serious problem in many developing countries due to their increased activity in developing the economy. Traditional PM detectors are heavy, bulky and expensive. As people are becoming more and more aware of the health threat of air pollutants, a low-cost and portable PM sensor is in great demand. In this poster, a particulate sensor based on MEMS (Microelectromechanical Systems) technology is proposed. Due to MEMS technology, it has the advantages of small size, low weight, low cost and high sensitivity. People can easily carry it to monitor the air quality anywhere they go. This can protect users from potential exposure to the polluted air in-door or during travel. The PM sensor was designed and its function is verified with COMSOL simulation

    Shape Optimization Design and Material Selection for a Fitness Equipment

    Engineers face constant challenges to design products with optimal geometry, dimensions, and select optimal materials and manufacturing process for an optimal design to enhance product performance and reduce cost. This paper designed a bar structure for a light and cheap pull up bar. Ashby’s material selection method was used to select material for the two conflicting objectives of minimizing weight and cost and also satisfy the structure constraint. An FEM model was built in ANSYS for stress analysis of the bar structure and for geometry optimization. The optimized geometry was found to have a 30% weight reduction

If you are the author of this work and desire to provide it open access or wish access removed, please contact the Wahlstrom Library to discuss permission.This study was developed to investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of a commercial product (Nopalea™) containing Prickly Pear Cactus Fruit Juice in 286 healthy adults. The research method employed was a double blind, placebo controlled, and time-series design with C-Reactive Protein (CRP) serving as a marker for inflammation. CRP levels were measured at baseline as well as at eight weeks and 12 weeks post-treatment. Levels of uric acid were also recorded since it is known that fructose sweetened beverages elevated levels of uric acid. Blood concentrations of CRP in participants ingesting Nopalea were reduced by an average of 20.9% over a period of eight weeks. This effect diminished with time in that CRP levels were reduced by only 10.5% compared to baseline at12 weeks (see Table 1). At both eight and 12 week assessments, these reductions were statistically significant (p 0.05). Blood concentrations of CRP in participants ingesting apricot juice were reduced by an average of 7.9% over a period of eight weeks (see Table 2). By 12 weeks, this effect diminished and CRP levels were only 3.1% less than those at baseline. At both eight and 12 week assessments, these reductions were not statistically significant (p >0.05). Blood concentration of uric acid in this group increased by 5.4% over baseline by eight weeks and remained elevated by 2.9% over baseline by the end of 12 weeks. At both eight and 12 week assessments, these elevations were statistically significant. CONCLUSION: Ingestion of Nopalea results in a statistically significant decrease in the inflammatory marker, CRP, in healthy adults who maintain CRP levels under 3mg/L, a level commonly associated with “average risk” for CVD

    Entrepreneurial Attitudes of Business and Non-Business Students

    The entrepreneurial attitudes of 714 business and non-business students in Asian and American universities were examined. Results based on the Robinson, Stimpson, Huefner, and Hunt (1991) Entrepreneurial Attitudes Orientation model indicated that non- business students possessed entrepreneurial attitudes in all four of the model’s attitudinal constructs. For IT students, female students had significantly higher entrepreneurial attitude scores than male IT students. It was also found that non-business students with exposure to entrepreneurship had higher entrepreneurial scores than the non-business students without this exposure

    A Dynamic Clustering Algorithm for Object Tracking and Localization in WSN

    A Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) is an assemblage of cooperative sensor nodes acting together into an environment to monitor an event of interest. However, one of the most limiting factors is the energy constrain for each node; therefore, it is a trade-off is required for that factor in designing of a network, while reporting, tracking or visualizing an event to be considered. In this paper, two object tracking techniques used in Wireless Sensor Networks based on cluster algorithms have been combined together to perform many functions in the proposed algorithm. The benefit of using clusters algorithms can be count as the detection node in a cluster reports an event to the Cluster Head (CH) node according to a query, and then the CH sends all the collected information to the sink or the base station. This way reduces energy consuming and required communication bandwidth. Furthermore, the algorithm is highly scalable while it prolongs the life time of the network
