Elderly people and those with certain disabilities often have difficulty standing up from a seated position. This project proposed to design an inflatable device that a person would sit on and would help lift the person up from the seat. The device is to be inflated with a small compressor and should be comfortable to sit on. The device can be part of a chair or be something portable and placed on the chair

Effects of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation on whole blood fatty acid levels

    No full text
This study was approved by the University of Bridgeport’s Institutional Review Board ID# 2017-11-01, and made possible through a University of Bridgeport Seed Money Grant awarded to Cheryl L. Lyon, N.D.Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) are popular dietary supplements that have purported beneficial effects for cardiovascular health, inflammatory, autoimmune, and mood disorders. The manufacture of dietary supplements in the United States is not well regulated and concerns surrounding the content and purity of commercially available n-3 PUFA supplements is warranted, as false content labeling and harmful or oxidized fatty acid contaminants may lead to negative health outcomes. In this research, which was part of a larger study assessing the role of nutritional and genetic factors in a sample of chronic musculoskeletal (MSK) pain sufferers, we report differences in whole blood fatty acid levels in a population seeking complementary and integrative health (CIH) care at an urban university-affiliated clinic

With the emphasis on simplicity and ease of use, we have developed a low cost and highly secure product. Unlike many other products which need more time to use

Assessment of Residential Internet Plans: Using a SMART Decision Analysis Approach

    No full text
This study was conducted to assess residential internet plans in the US (Connecticut State) using a SMART decision analysis approach. A qualitative method of data collection was used in this study. Two sets of data were collected. The first set was derived from ISPs availability in the selected area. For this part, we used a zip code in Stamford, CT, to identify available ISPs. Among available ISPs in the chosen area, five options were selected, which are EarthLink, Verizon, ViaSat, and HughesNet. The second set was based on cost, connection type, speed, extra features, and customer rating. Using a SMART decision analysis, we found that the best ISPs options based on availability were Verizon, HughesNet, and ViaSat. Additionally, the top ISPs options based on connection type were EarthLink and Verizon based on the connection type. Further, the excellent ISPs options based on speed were Verizon and Frontier. Moreover, the perfect ISPs choices based on customer rating were EarthLink and Verizon. Moreover, the greatest ISPs option based on extra features was Verizon. As a result, this study suggested that the ideal ISPs option in the used zip code in Stamford, Connecticut was Verizon

Effects of Leukocyte-Platelet Rich Fibrin and Nanoporous Scaffolds on Cell Proliferation and Cell Migration

In regenerative medicine, repair and regeneration of defects and damage in both soft and hard tissues still remain a challenge. Hence, better bioengineering strategies and biomaterials are needed. Autologous platelet concentrates are potential tools from which regenerative medicine can benefit. The Leukocyte Platelet Rich Fibrin (L-PRF) is a subfamily of the PRF concentrates that has been in the spotlight because of its simplicity. The presence in its enriched solid three-dimensional fibrin matrix of leukocytes, proteins, cytokines, growth factors, and stem cells give this biomaterial angiogenic, osteogenic, hemostatic, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, analgesic, and wound healing properties. Polymeric substances, such as PLGA have demonstrated potential to operate as a scaffold for bone volume augmentation. The ability to tailor the material's properties at the molecular level is one the benefits that allow these materials to be used as proper scaffolds for cells

“This is Going to be a Learning Curve, Especially Because You’re White”: Becoming an Anti-Racist Music Teacher in a Majority Indigenous Classroom

    No full text
This narrative case study explores the practices, experiences, and perceptions of Charlie (pseud.), a White music teacher in upstate New York, who is striving to do anti racist work in a majority Indigenous teaching context. Through the philosophical lens of White music teachers as ‘becoming’ -- growing, striving, changing, learning -- the author suggests that White teachers can and should strive to do anti racist work. Given that the K-12 public school teaching population in the United States is overwhelmingly White and that the student population in U.S. public schools is becoming increasingly more diverse, the author argues for the necessity and responsibility of White educators to work toward anti racist teaching practices. Employing narrative inquiry, the author highlights ways in which Charlie grapples with his Whiteness while striving toward anti racist practices by seeking Indigenous knowledge from culture bearers, collaborating with an Indigenous musician, problematizing surface level multiculturalism within the school, and reaching for deeper curricular engagements with students’ lives in and outside of school. Also embedded within the article is an in depth, reflexive discussion of the researcher’s own role throughout the study as well as the researcher’s own positionality as a White music education scholar. Given the Whiteness of the teaching profession in the United States (both in K-12 public schools as well as in university teacher education programs), the author suggests that White researchers must also interrogate and grapple with their Whiteness in publishing studies related to anti racism. The lens of ‘becoming’ is also applied to the researcher’s identity as they consider what it might mean to study Whiteness in the context of a majority Indigenous student population: the author argues that it is equally important for White teacher education researchers to engage in anti racist discourses and learn from scholarly voices of People of Color throughout the process of contributing to the field of education (specifically, music teacher education)

Trying for the EdMal Trifecta: THEORIZING CONTRACT-BASED EDUCATIONAL MALPRACTICE WITHIN HIGHER EDUCATION

    No full text
Although courts have relatively unanimously chosen to dismiss considerations of educational malpractice as advanced under tort law, this project will theorize consider the feasibility of this concept when built upon a traditional interpretation of contracts as applied to higher education. • How if at all could higher education be at risk for education malpractice under a contract theory? • What specific conditions, if any at all, create improved standing for contract-based educational malpractice success in higher education? •• Do the institutional actions and student reactions in the wake of campus interruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic present evidence of contractual liability sufficient enough to sustain claims of educational malpractice? •• Does the increased recruitment and reciprocal expectations built into the institution-student athlete relationship create higher susceptibility for institutional educational malpractice liability? •• Do the prolific advertising and increased recruitment practices prevalent in the for-profit college industry create higher susceptibility for institutional educational malpractice liability

Economic Impacts of the Covid-19 Pandemic

    No full text
As of the writing of the study, the covid-19 pandemic, which hit the world with full force two years ago, has caused more than 6 million deaths around the world, with nearly 460 million confirmed cases. After the outbreak of the pandemic, governments around the world took drastic and sometimes draconian measures—including social distancing, shelter in-place, shut-down and closure orders—to stem the spread of the coronavirus. As the covid-induced crisis unfolded, many households and firms were ill-prepared to withstand an income shock of the length and scale of the pandemic. In response, many government implemented unprecedented, largescale stimulus packages along with the easing of monetary policy. Nevertheless, the world economy fell into recession in 2020. The pandemic has been a truly global economic shock. The purpose of this study is to provide an assessment of the economic impacts of the covid-19 pandemic. To this end, it focuses on the major macroeconomic variables in 2020

    SMART BLIND

    No full text
Window Blinds are a very common item to have in any household as they block natural light from entering and promote a sense of security as people outside will not be able to see through it. Blinds also promote higher power efficiency and lower power consumption, as approximately 30% of a home’s heating energy is lost through windows. Therefore, window blinds are an essential item to have in one’s home, but they can also be a nuisance when having to remember if they are open or closed
