Revisiting innovation: the organizational vulnerability of small or medium companies innovating in the outdoor sports sector

    No full text
While it is common thought that innovating is likely to procure competitive advantage within the industry of sports goods, it is also a risky activity which may lead to damaging consequences for companies. It therefore seems relevant to take an interest in the potential detrimental effects of innovation processes within small, particularly creative, companies in the sports sector. In this paper, we seek to know if, and how, engaging in an innovation process leads to singular forms of organizational vulnerability.Case studies were carried out in five French companies specializing in the outdoors: three small or medium entreprises (SME) and two very small (or micro) entreprises (VSE). We conducted a total of 48 interviews with different actors in the innovation processes, accompanied by field observations and analysis of secondary data. The priority frequently given to meeting technical challenges is likely to distance the product from the customer and real use. In certain cases, "innovation fever" generates internal imbalance. Second, some companies are too dependent on a key figure in their functioning, the inventor-entrepreneur; it sometimes implies a weakening of the innovation network during its vital decoupling stage. Finally, although the creation of innovation networks is necessary, it heightens the dependence on stakeholders and exposes to specific threats.Excessive confidence in the benefits of innovation can prove problematic. Innovators should not be discouraged, but reminded of the contingent and uncertain nature of the processes in which they engage, requiring anticipation and measure. The challenge consists in managing both the present and the future, while acknowledging that the exploitation of a routine does not prevent the exploration of new solutions.

Trace-based cryptanalysis of cyclotomic Rq,0×RqR_{q,0}\times R_q-PLWE for the non-split case

    No full text
We describe a decisional attack against a version of the PLWE problem inwhich the samples are taken from a certain proper subring of large dimension ofthe cyclotomic ring Fq[x]/(Φpk(x))\mathbb{F}_q[x]/(\Phi_{p^k}(x)) with k>1k>1 in the casewhere q1(modp)q\equiv 1\pmod{p} but Φpk(x)\Phi_{p^k}(x) is not totally split overFq\mathbb{F}_q. Our attack uses the fact that the roots of Φpk(x)\Phi_{p^k}(x) oversuitable extensions of Fq\mathbb{F}_q have zero-trace and has overwhelmingsuccess probability as a function of the number of input samples. Animplementation in Maple and some examples of our attack are also provided.Comment: 20 pages; 1 figure; Minor updates as per referee's requests; formatted for publicatio

Transparency and Discovery: Using a Text-Image Network to Study Manuscripts and Text Transmission

    No full text
This article describes desired use cases of manuscript-text interactions that could positively influence future scholarship. These examples illustrate the potential for greater transparency between critical editions and their data sources (i.e., manuscript witnesses). Further, these use cases demonstrate how the possibility of a connected environment could facilitate the automated discovery of related manuscripts at granular levels (i.e. identifying connections at precise coordinates regions) through the discovery of related texts. In the second section, the article walks through the data modelling and engineering steps required to achieve these uses cases. Finally, the third section provides examples to illustrate how this future is already a fledging reality

The Database of Byzantine Book Epigrams Project: Principles, Challenges, Opportunities

    No full text
This paper presents an overview of the history, conceptualization, and development of the Database of Byzantine Book Epigrams, an ongoing research project hosted at Ghent University. It also offers a glimpse into current and future research threads carried out within the project, with an eye on long-term sustainability. The first part of the paper pinpoints the position of DBBE within the broad field of Digital Humanities and addresses the question of how and why Byzantine metrical paratexts have been collected in an open-access online database. In the second part of the article, we describe the main features of the relational database currently available, both from the perspective of its users and from a technical point of view. The third section of the paper includes the description of four subprojects connected to DBBE, which at present involve the development of a graph database complementary to the relational one, the implementation of natural language pre-processing applied to the DBBE corpus, the linguistic analysis of formulaicity in book epigrams, and the exploration of the broad implications of the study of book epigrams for a better understanding of Byzantine book culture

Twenty years ago, the Journal du CNRS published a short note entitled “La perle de la pluridisciplinarité” (“The pearl of multidisciplinarity”), a Word Game about an experiment carried out with carnelian bead craftsmen working in the town of Khambhat (India, Gujarat state) by a small group of five researchers from different institutions and various scientific fields: archaeology, psychology, biomechanics and neuroscience. This article examines various facets of this interdisciplinary experience, analyzing the way questions were posed, collaborations formed, relationships between researchers. Other issues such as funding and publications are also considered as well as institutional difficulties and scientific misunderstandings of such approaches, knowing that disciplinary boundaries often remain the standard.

    Smooth subvarieties of Jacobians

We give new examples of algebraic integral cohomology classes on smoothprojective complex varieties that are not integral linear combinations ofclasses of smooth subvarieties. Some of our examples have dimension 6, thelowest possible. The classes that we consider are minimal cohomology classes onJacobians of very general curves. Our main tool is complex cobordism.Comment: 11 pages, v3: final versio

Affect as a proxy for literary mood

    No full text
We propose to use affect as a proxy for mood in literary texts. In thisstudy, we explore the differences in computationally detecting tone versusdetecting mood. Methodologically we utilize affective word embeddings to lookat the affective distribution in different text segments. We also present asimple yet efficient and effective method of enhancing emotion lexicons to takeboth semantic shift and the domain of the text into account producingreal-world congruent results closely matching both contemporary and modernqualitative analyses.Comment: Submitted to Journal of Data Mining and Digital Humanitie

: The Birth of a Soviet Building: Dealing With and Making Architectural Archives Talk

    No full text
Pour mise en ligne sur Épisciences. The buildings that comprise my research corpus encourage me to question my archival approach to architecture in a socialist environment. The study of an architectural project requires looking at the constraints, the reasons for the construction, and the interpretation. Architectural archives are also research objects in themselves. Indeed, there are several components that should be studied in parallel with the buildings: “administrative”, “graphic”, “oral” and “in-situ”. This paper is an opportunity to become familiar with the different sources invoked in architectural analysis.

This article studies the pictural manuscript of the unfinished novel Vadim, that Mikhail Lermontov (1814-1841) composed between 1832 and 1834. Lermontov’s archive, as a material testimony of literary creation, offers a possibility to access the author’s work without an editorial intermediary. The page full of drawings and sketches, that we can call the paratext of a manuscript, accompanies Vadim’s text and characterizes Lermontov as a producer of text’s imaginary. By investigating through a comparative analysis of text and image how Lermontov draws a portrait of a generation, this article shows that the pictorial paratext of the manuscript does not illustrate a concrete work, but the creative process and Lermontov’s aesthetic research.

    No full text
Pour mise en ligne sur ÉpisciencesThis article offers to rethink the chronological paradigm in which literary fairy tales would be a natural evolution of oral and folk tales. In view of the Russian literary tales published during the Romantic period, where, due to a still incomplete archiving process, access to oral and folk tales was still unequal for writers, the reasoning that the literary fairy tale would necessarily be based on previous oral and folk tales can indeed be questioned. By looking at the way in which authors associate their text with an earlier document, this study aims at highlighting the fact that the presence of a folk tale as a source within several Russian literary fairy tales of the Romantic period is more a result of a staging on the part of the writers, rather than a real proof of authenticity.
