    No full text
This article describes how the procedures for awarding a thesis prize in family medicine were reorganized in a participatory approach in partnership with patients and training supervisors, in line with a social responsibility approach. It describes the initial procedures, how and why the selection process was modified, and discusses the contributions and issues that this has raised, before concluding with one of the results: the durability of this new way of awarding the thesis prize, a way of recognizing the quality of research carried out in family medicine theses and potentially of making this type of work more visible.

Decidability of Two Truly Concurrent Equivalences for Finite Bounded Petri Nets

    No full text
We prove that the well-known (strong) fully-concurrent bisimilarity and thenovel i-causal-net bisimilarity, which is a sligtlhy coarser variant ofcausal-net bisimilarity, are decidable for finite bounded Petri nets. Theproofs are based on a generalization of the ordered marking proof techniquethat Vogler used to demonstrate that (strong) fully-concurrent bisimilarity(or, equivalently, history-preserving bisimilarity) is decidable on finite safenets

Preparing Big Manuscript Data for Hierarchical Clustering with Minimal HTR Training

    No full text
HTR (Handwritten Text Recognition) technologies have progressed enough to offer high-accuracy results in recognising handwritten documents, even on a synchronous level. Despite the state-of-the-art algorithms and software, historical documents (especially those written in Greek) remain a real-world challenge for researchers. A large number of unedited or under-edited works of Greek Literature (ancient or Byzantine, especially the latter) exist to this day due to the complexity of producing critical editions. To critically edit a literary text, scholars need to pinpoint text variations on several manuscripts, which requires fully (or at least partially) transcribed manuscripts. For a large manuscript tradition (i.e., a large number of manuscripts transmitting the same work), such a process can be a painstaking and time-consuming project. To that end, HTR algorithms that train AI models can significantly assist, even when not resulting in entirely accurate transcriptions. Deep learning models, though, require a quantum of data to be effective. This, in turn, intensifies the same problem: big (transcribed) data require heavy loads of manual transcriptions as training sets. In the absence of such transcriptions, this study experiments with training sets of various sizes to determine the minimum amount of manual transcription needed to produce usable results. HTR models are trained through the Transkribus platform on manuscripts from multiple works of a single Byzantine author, John Chrysostom. By gradually reducing the number of manually transcribed texts and by training mixed models from multiple manuscripts, economic transcriptions of large bodies of manuscripts (in the hundreds) can be achieved. Results of these experiments show that if the right combination of manuscripts is selected, and with the transfer-learning tools provided by Transkribus, the required training sets can be reduced by up to 80%. Certain peculiarities of Greek manuscripts, which lead to easy automated cleaning of resulting transcriptions, could further improve these results. The ultimate goal of these experiments is to produce a transcription with the minimum required accuracy (and therefore the minimum manual input) for text clustering. If we can accurately assess HTR learning and outcomes, we may find that less data could be enough. This case study proposes a solution for researching/editing authors and works that were popular enough to survive in hundreds (if not thousands) of manuscripts and are, therefore, unfeasible to be evaluated by humans

Hearing voices is a human experience that no longer belongs solely to the fields of psychiatry and psychology. Over the past forty years, the perception of this phenomenon has been gradually transformed for mental health professionals, classification manuals and voice hearers themselves. This evolution is underpinned by the emergence of an international movement, the Hearing Voices Movement, made up of voice-hearers and, in some cases, users or former users of psychiatry. With the aim of proposing new forms of support for these experiences, a number of groups aimed at voice hearers have gradually emerged. Our two exploratory studies, based on questionnaires created in collaboration with voice hearers and group facilitators, examine the therapeutic evaluation of these settings, as well as mental health professionals' perceptions of them.

Relational Models for the Lambek Calculus with Intersection and Constants

    No full text
We consider relational semantics (R-models) for the Lambek calculus extendedwith intersection and explicit constants for zero and unit. For its variantwithout constants and a restriction which disallows empty antecedents, Andrekaand Mikulas (1994) prove strong completeness. We show that it fails withoutthis restriction, but, on the other hand, prove weak completeness fornon-standard interpretation of constants. For the standard interpretation, evenweak completeness fails. The weak completeness result extends to an infinitarysetting, for so-called iterative divisions (Kleene star under division). Wealso prove strong completeness results for product-free fragments.Comment: This article is an extended version of the conference paper presented at RAMiCS 202

Model Checking Temporal Properties of Recursive Probabilistic Programs

    No full text
Probabilistic pushdown automata (pPDA) are a standard operational model forprogramming languages involving discrete random choices and recursiveprocedures. Temporal properties are useful for specifying the chronologicalorder of events during program execution. Existing approaches for modelchecking pPDA against temporal properties have focused mostly onω\omega-regular and LTL properties. In this paper, we give decidability andcomplexity results for the model checking problem of pPDA againstω\omega-visibly pushdown languages that can be described by specificationlogics such as CaRet. These logical formulae allow specifying properties thatexplicitly take the structured computations arising from procedural programsinto account. For example, CaRet is able to match procedure calls with theircorresponding future returns, and thus allows to express fundamental programproperties such as total and partial correctness

Sequential Monte Carlo methods have been a major breakthrough in the field of numerical signal processing for stochastic dynamical state-space systems with partial and noisy observations. However, these methods still present certain weaknesses. One of the most fundamental is the degeneracy of the filter due to the impoverishment of the particles: the prediction step allows the particles to explore the state-space and can lead to the impoverishment of the particles if this exploration is poorly conducted or when it conflicts with the following observation that will be used in the evaluation of the likelihood of each particle. In this article, in order to improve this last step within the framework of the classic bootstrap particle filter, we propose a simple approximation of the one step fixed- lag smoother. At each time iteration, we propose to perform additional simulations during the prediction step in order to improve the likelihood of the selected particles.

Epidemiological modelling and epidemic threshold analysis in the networks are widely used for the control and prediction of infectious disease spread. Therefore, the prediction of the epidemic threshold in networks is a challenge in epidemiology where the contact network structure fundamentally influences the dynamics of the spread. In this paper, we design and experiment a new general structural and spectral prediction approach of the epidemic threshold. This more captures the full network structure using the number of nodes, the spectral radius, and the energy of graph. With data analytic and data visualization technics, we drive simulations overall on 31 different types and topologies networks. The simulations show similar qualitative and quantitative results between the new structural prediction approach of the epidemic threshold values compared to the earlier MF, HMF and QMF widely used benchmark approaches. The results show that the new approach is similar to the earlier one, further captures the full network structure, and is also accurate. The new approach offers a new general structural and spectral area to analyse the spreading processes in a network. The results are both fundamental and practical interest in improving the control and prediction of spreading processes in networks. So these results can be particularly significant to advise an effective epidemiological control policy.

Categorical Vector Space Semantics for Lambek Calculus with a Relevant Modality

    No full text
We develop a categorical compositional distributional semantics for LambekCalculus with a Relevant Modality !L*, which has a limited edition of thecontraction and permutation rules. The categorical part of the semantics is amonoidal biclosed category with a coalgebra modality, very similar to thestructure of a Differential Category. We instantiate this category to finitedimensional vector spaces and linear maps via "quantisation" functors and workwith three concrete interpretations of the coalgebra modality. We apply themodel to construct categorical and concrete semantic interpretations for themotivating example of !L*: the derivation of a phrase with a parasitic gap. Theeffectiveness of the concrete interpretations are evaluated via adisambiguation task, on an extension of a sentence disambiguation dataset toparasitic gap phrases, using BERT, Word2Vec, and FastText vectors andRelational tensors
