Marrying off Early: Pre-Marital Virginity and Family Integrity among the Oromo in Central Ethiopia

    No full text
This article investigates early marriage among the Oromo in Dawo District, Oromia National Regional State, Ethiopia. The research employed a mixed approach to secure relevant data. We collected primary data from the field via key informant interviews and focus group discussion. We selected key informants purposively from concerned government offices and community representatives. We collected quantitative data via questionnaire from 92 randomly selected school girls. Despite the government’s attempts to ban early marriage, the practice is still common and evolving. Parents are gradually losing the sole decision to marry their children without their consent nowadays. Yet they still have power over when and to whom they give away their daughters. Kadhaa (betrothal) and butii (abduction) are the two main ways of effecting early marriage in the study area. The main cultural reasons for which parents marry off their daughters early include securing their daughters’ future and maintaining girls’ pre-marital virginity. Virginity is valued in marriage and can be a source of honor or shame for the girls and their parents. Poverty, and particularly the current dire economic conditions in the area, coupled with an alarming level of joblessness among the youth who hold a diploma or a degree, have made the girls at school lose hope in education as a viable option for their future life and worsened early marriage in recent years. The girls themselves view marriage as an alternative life career and thus quit school for an early marriage

    Get PDF
Modern textile design education is based on skill and practice. To inculcate the required expertise, contemporary educators used craft-based assignments. Many designers and artists consider designing high-tech products to start with sketching and drawing, paper, and a pencil. The visualization of design is a broad idea. It involves the cognitive critical and technical thinking of the designer. The present study discussed different approaches to visualization and elucidation. Craft based assignment is the foundation of the design process, where undergraduate textile design students experienced design development. The present study is a multi-case study. Data were collected from three assignments in textile design education. It’s a departmental case study where three cases were studies under the supervision of three textile design instructors. The outcomes demonstrated that, through craftsmanship training, the students found perception and explanation methods that were beforehand obscure to them and that they would not have thought of themselves. The study plan focused more on the thought and the outline sentiment than on the subtleties while applying the new strategies. The study shows that rough techniques seem to offer undergraduate textile design students a more robust visualization method and lower their creating threshold. The outcomes may be useful for teachers when planning craft projects that include a complete craft process that promotes undergraduate textile design students’ own creativity and ideas. Through a well-planned craft project, it is possible to combine knowledge of different courses and promote essential skills in overall learning and education

    No full text
This article is about the Statute of the Indian from the educational point of view of equality. It aims to approach one of the branches of social rights, regarding education. This education is protected by the 1988 Constitution of the Federative Republic of Brazil and must be provided on an equal basis for students of basic education and indigenous academics. It is a fact that traditional populations, from basic education, receive an education in a different way, because of their language, customs. Based on this premise, the research sought to answer why offer differentiated treatment in basic education (primary and secondary) and not give the necessary support in higher education? In this context, we sought to get to know the reality of the indigenous peoples in terms of education, from the first steps until they entered the University. In addition, factors were pointed out that make it difficult for these scholars to remain in universities and the possible ways to attenuate the existing discrepancies in education and opportunity between indigenous and non-indigenous people. The methodology applied was the bibliographic review, with the use of books, legislation (especially the Statute of the Indian) and articles hosted in online journals. The results showed that despite the advances, there is still a long way to go to achieve an ideal education

Based on a unique data set, this research paper examines the pricing of equity-linked structured products in the market. The following section of this paper look at examining a few popular products available in the market, describing their key characteristics, and identifying one such product which will be examined closely for the purposes of determining if the issuing institution has priced the same fairly. The daily closing prices of a large variety of structured products are compared to theoretical values derived from the prices of options traded on the Eurex (European Exchange). This research paper also provides a brief background on the pricing of equity-linked structured products (‘products’) and issues around valuation of these products and look in detail fair pricing of the zero-coupon bond and the basket option. Comparing this with the market price of the instrument I could draw conclusions based on how close the real market price of the instrument is with the recomputed price

Shattering Ethnocentric and Eurocentric Subjectivities in foreign language teaching: A Critical Intercultural Perspective

    Get PDF
The complexity and essence of languages and cultures are unique. People live in culturally built niches based on beliefs, subjectivities, skills, and practices resulting from symbolic and material inheritances passed down from generation to generation. Throughout the qualitative, documentary, and hermeneutical research, it has been feasible to identify that postmodern society has reified the human being. People are considered a means of production and consumption. Besides, the dominant groups impose languages and cultures that they label as prestigious, ignoring that every person is unique and has ideas, values, principles, religions, languages, unrepeatable cultures. This article will describe the process of subjectivation and its relationship with \u27technologies of power,\u27 which enforce thoughts, self-concept, and behavior abstractly, subtly, and invisibly. The research results depict that some authors define the English language as dominant, imperialistic, and homogeneous. The article goes further than intellectual elaboration about English language teaching and proposes that educational institutions should be sites where students actively adopt an intercultural, analytical, and critical thinking approach. That way, students learn to discover their identities, value pluralism, research the causes and consequences of domination processes, and are open to diversity without acquiring ethnocentrism or xenophobic ideologies. The article contests neutrality and absolutism in education. It views schools as cultural and political arenas where teachers should support students to understand reality with arguments and reflection, building a more democratic and proactive society. Thinking about education from a humanistic and ethical approach and holding transformative social action in classrooms respond to the chaotic and uneven prevailing world

The paper presents an analytical exposition, critical context and integrative conclusion on the trends and best practices in Information Technology Management, and reviews and evaluates the key issues, trends and future direction of Modern Information Technology Management. IT is generally accepted as a key enabler of economic and technological growth. Managers implement new technology to change something: the organization, the nature of work, relationships with other organizations, or some other facet of business. Information Technology (IT) plays a vital role in leveraging productivity and efficiency in private organizations, governments and research. The value of IT in any organization depends on its infrastructure, which consists of computers, network and telecommunication technologies, data and core software applications. Information Technology (IT) is now a force and driver of modern technological development and globalization, and makes the management of information more efficient and effective. Technology management entails all management activities that determine the application of policy, objectives and responsibilities as well as their execution in an organization in terms of planning, allocating resources, organizing and ensuring outcomes that improve processes. The major IT Management issues are: Using technology to design efficient and effective organizations; Developing a plan for information technology in the organization; Using IT as a part of corporate strategy; Taking advantage of interorganizational systems; Deciding on and developing new applications of IT; Reengineering business processes; Adopting special applications; Changing the organization; Managing the IT infrastructure in a time of explosive growth and technological change; Deciding whether and what to outsource;  and Deciding how much to invest in IT. Knowledge and skills are a necessary and sufficient condition for technological progress. Developing countries lack enough skilled IT persons who can design, program, install, configure and maintain Information Technology in this constantly changing industry. Accordingly, lack of qualified and globally recognized IT professionals is seriously hampering IT adoption and development. Management Information Systems refer to information management methods tied to the automation or support of human decision making, whereas IT Management refers to the IT related management activities in organizations
