Cases of disruptive behavior problems such as inattentiveness, bullying, violence, drug abuse, hitting other pupils, teasing others, yelling and complaining amongst pupils in public primary schools in Mathioya Sub-county are on the rise. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between peer counseling activities and pupils’ discipline in public primary schools. A sample size of 196 respondents were selected. The study established that there was significant relationship between peer counseling activities and pupils’ discipline at the p<0.05[r = 0.001, p = 0.001]. This indicates that, in public primary schools where teachers frequently engage in peer counseling activities, pupils manifest few cases of indiscipline. The implications of this finding are discussed

Agribusiness is a set of linked operations with the objective of producing, benefiting and distributing food. This sector deals with the various activities ranging from genetic improvement to the delivery of the final product. The agents, whether small or large, are inserted in at least some part of the production chain. In this context, it is noteworthy that the innovation that has been defined as a critical issue for cooperation networks. Theory has pointed out that innovation, and organizational performance, has an influence on competitive advantage. In view of this, the general objective of this study was to identify whether innovation and organizational performance are antecedents of competitive advantage in the context of beef cattle, in the view of agents working in cooperation networks in southern Brazil. Therefore, the method proposed for the development of this study is of a qualitative nature, operationalized through in-depth interviews and non-participatory observation. Nine producers were interviewed, from four cooperation networks in the states of Paraná, Santa Catarina and Rio Grande do Sul. The results obtained show that innovation and organizational performance are antecedents of competitive advantage, in the perception of the producers who participated in the study

Predictors of mortality in the intensive care unit for adult patients admitted on mechanical ventilation: admission profile

    Get PDF
Evaluating risk factors for mortality in local populations such as adult patients admitted on mechanical ventilation in intensive care units (ICU) may provide support for the management and improvement of outcomes in these units. The inclusion of the workload of professionals in these models has offered a different view of predictors. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether Nursing workload assessed by the Nursing Activities Score (NAS), predictors of mortality (APACHEII and SAPS3) and some additional admission variables for patients admitted on mechanical ventilation in an ICU are predictors of death. We evaluated 194 patients who remained on mechanical ventilation for 48 hours before or after admission in one ICU, in a university hospital of high complexity. The clinical and socio-demographic profile, the NAS of admission and some admission variables were evaluated. The outcome discharge or death in the ICU was evaluated for all patients, and from simple or multiple logistic regression models, risk or protective factors for death in the ICU were obtained. Individually, only SAPS3 was significant for prediction of death (OR = 1.03; CI95%: 1.01; 1.05), while the APACHEII and the NAS of admission was not able to predict ICU mortality. In the multiple model, the only risk factors for ICU mortality were the presence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (OR = 8.82; CI95%: 1.82; 42.70), having thyroid diseases (OR = 5.98; CI95%: 1.15; 31.22) and the increase in the level of urea in the blood (OR = 1.01; CI95%: 1,002; 1.02). The admission variables of this population were more effective in predicting ICU mortality than the predictors of mortality evaluated here

Anatomical characteristics of the accessory hepatic lobe and its clinical-functional particularities

    Get PDF
Riedel\u27s lobe (ectopic lobe), also known as the accessory hepatic lobe, consists of an anatomical variation characterized by a tongue-shaped protrusion on the visceral surface of the liver right lobe, fixed by a pedicle. This variant draws attention in the clinical practice, as it can be mistaken for a tumor due to its elongated aspect. The aim of this research was to conduct a study on the anatomical characteristics and clinical and functional peculiarities of the accessory hepatic lobe. The paper is based on a integrative review and observational study on a cadaveric specimen. A cadaver with anatomical variation was used. Data were collected in PubMed, Scielo, and VHL. 257 articles were found in the databases, but only 13 were used for research. In careful review, two rare cases of the accessory lobe in the left lobe of the liver, hypoplastic left lobes, and agenesis of the right hepatic lobe, and often the clinical picture without changes in signs and symptoms were found. These morphological abnormalities\u27 clinical impact is limited in the absence of underlying liver disease, cirrhosis, or known cancer. In case of complications or after the diagnosis of pedunculated tumors in the liver, laparoscopy is well indicated for removing these lobes or tumors

The assessment of nursing workload offers both support for patient care planning and service management. In an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) this workload is measured by the Nursing Activities Scores (NAS), although in specialized areas such as Cardiology, its use is still diminished. Objective: To describe NAS and the prevalence of its sub-items in a Brazilian Cardiac ICU. We also aimed to evaluate NAS oscillation since the opening of the unit, and according to the day of the week. Methods: Daily NAS records collected from November 2014 to October 2018 were assessed, totaling 8600 assessments distributed over 49 months. The data were analyzed according to time, day of the week, number of records per day, and dichotomizing if NAS was higher or lower than 50 points. Results: NAS presented mean value of 52.91 points and a median of 53.40 points. The mean NAS values per month ranged from 45.00 to 59.10 points. The percentage of NAS assessments above 50 points ranged from 20.59 to 92.34% per month and proved to be a better indicator for assessing the variability of the monthly workload. When combined two by two, 66.01% of NAS combinations scored more than 100 points, suggesting the need for more than one nursing professional per day. When the data were stratified by year, 2018 had the lowest means compared to the others. When compared to the mean values in function of the day of the week, it was observed that Monday to Friday (with the highest mean on Wednesday, the predominant day for cardiac surgeries) showed higher values than weekends. Conclusions: Overall, NAS showed low values compared to other general or cardiac ICUs, it also presented temporal variability and our results showed risk of workload overload which can compromise patient care and safety. Such results reinforce the importance of the administrative and assistant aspects of the routine use of NAS in ICUs specially in specialized environments as Cardiac ICU

    Get PDF
Some studies have investigated the association between motor development and cognitive skills. The present study aims to correlate motor development  and academic performance in 79 students between 7 to 9 years old from a private school in São Paulo-Brazil. We used the Movement Assessment Battery for Children - Second Edition (MABC-2) to assess the motor development and the results of school report in Portuguese and Mathematics as a measure of academic performance. Pearson\u27s correlation analysis showed a positive association between motor development and cognitive skills, evidencing that students who had better academic performance, also obtained better scores in motor performance. The association between MABC-2 total score and Portuguese grade, for example, obtained a significant correlation of p <0.014. Further studies should be carried out to understand if motor development improve can modulate cognitive skills

Epidermodysplasia Verruciformis acquired in an HIV-positive patient

    Get PDF
The disease epidermodysplasia verruciformis is a rare genodermatosis, autosomal recessive in most cases, characterized by susceptibility to infection by types of HPV of the genus β (EV-HPV) that do not occur in immunocompetent clinics. With the increased survival of immunosuppressed patients, especially with AIDS, a form of the disease called epidermodysplasia verruciformis acquired from a clinician similar to the genetic disease has been reduced, but challenging to manage, since an antiretroviral therapy leads to a cutaneous one, making patients more resistant to any treatment modality

Predictors of health activation for patients with chronic kidney disease undergoing hemodialysis

    Get PDF
Introduction: the quality of self-care in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) is important to improve quality of life, increase survival and reduce complications. Self-care can be evaluated by measuring the health activation of these patients. Objectives: evaluating the health activation of patients with CKD undergoing hemodialysis (HD) compared to a normative group (health self-reported subjects), and to identify the social, demographic and clinical determinants that are associated with the health activation. Method: cross-sectional, analytical, descriptive and quantitative study approved by the local ethics committee and conducted in a public and a private outpatient hemodialysis clinic. Participants were patients with CKD on HD (focal group) and subjects on a normative group. All of them answered the questionnaire of sociodemographic and clinical characterization and the instrument "Patient Activation Measure" (PAM13). For scores comparisons were used the Mann-Whitney test. Regarding the evaluation of the linear effect of the variables of profile on PAM13, multiple linear regression was used, including the evaluation of the two groups and only for patients with CKD. Results: the study included in each group. Regarding the characteristics of the CKD patients, there was a predominance of males (59%), incomplete high school or less (68%). Most of them too was from a private administration clinic (53%) and reported having already presented some type of complication stemming from CKD (57%). Regarding the evaluation of activation, the activation scores did not differ between the two groups (median of 56.4 in CKD patients and 56.4 in normative group, p > 0.05) and the activation scores of both groups corresponded to activation level 3 with 34.5% of prevalence (p > 0.05). When the two groups were analyzed together, schooling (Bi = 5.38; p= 0.002), practice physical activity (Bi = 4.2; p= 0.019) and the number of people who co-reside (Bi = -2.22; p= 0.001) influenced the activation score. In the CKD patients, independently, the variables that influenced the activation score were gender (Bi = -4.69; p = 0.050); schooling (Bi = 6.55; p = 0.008); type of clinic of origin (Bi = -5.48; p = 0.02) and the presence of complications related to CKD (Bi = -5.25; p = 0.026). Conclusion: activation scores did not differ between the patients with CKD on HD and the health subjects. Schooling, practice physical activity and number of people residing with the individual were predictors of health activation in both groups. For the CKD patients group, the variables that influenced positively the activation was schooling; and that influenced negatively was the gender, type of clinic of origin and the presence of complications related to CKD
