    Get PDF
Child trafficking is one of the leading crimes in Kenya. The purpose of this study therefore was to look at the efficacy of advocacy communication when it comes to addressing the complications of child trafficking in society. The study focus was Mathare constituency in Nairobi County. This is because there are many child trafficking cases from Mathare constituency that have been reported over the years causing a number of humanitarian organizations, who work with schools and community groups, to step in and address the issue. A purposive sample of 240 teacher respondents and 16 facilitators was selected as per Yamane’s formula while convergent parallel mixed methods design was used for data collection and analysis. The study established that videos and pictorials were the most popular advocacy methods used, with a 100 percent respondent rate while 98 percent observed that through advocacy, humanitarian organizations were making a difference in countering child trafficking. The study established also that all (100%) of the facilitators agreed that the stakeholders directly involved with children did contribute to the fight against child trafficking. The study concluded that integrated communication was adopted by facilitators and that the advocacy communication methods used were effective. The study recommends involvement of key stakeholders’ right from the planning stage for effectiveness. A recommendation of the study is that further investigations be done from the viewpoints of the children, parents and the local administration

Pereskia aculeata vibrational model by Raman characterization and DFT method

    Get PDF
Raman scattering was used to obtain vibrational modes in a Pereskia aculeata sample. The obtained spectrum was compared with quercetin\u27s theoretical spectra, kaempferol, isorhamnetin, rutinose, caffeic, and tartaric acid, generated from the density functional theory (DFT) method, which used structures of the known composition present in the sample. Among the main compounds, phenolic acids and flavonoids are mentioned. Vibrational signatures, designated as CO and CH group modes, are abundant and bands in the region between 800 and 1800 cm-1. This showed that the theoretical and experimental results had good correspondence between the flavonoids. Statistical observations of correlation and principal component analysis (PCA) were used, which helped in the process of correlation between sample and data obtained. Theoretical spectra have been corrected by a single scale factor of 0.961, and vibrational contributions by the molecular group were via VEDA software

Diagnosis of hollow trees in an area of effective sustainable forest management in the Amazon forest

    Get PDF
The sustainable practices of Forest Management activities are used with the objective of minimizing impacts to the environment, as well as exploring tree individuals with qualities that aim at the highest volumetric yield in sawmills. However, some characteristics may not be diagnosed before logging, as is the case with hollow trees, commonly found in forested areas. Thus, the objective was to diagnose the occurrence of hollow trees in two areas of forest exploitation, for the knowledge of individuals at the family and botanical species level. In order to carry out thediagnosis of the occurrence of hollow trees, data on the effective exploitation of trees in the Company\u27s Forest Management areas were obtained through a collection of information on two Annual Production Units - UPA, named according to the company\u27s specification as named as UPA ITP11 and UPA FLA01. In each UPA, tree individuals were identified by gender, species, family, distribution, presence of hollowness and the basic density of their wood.  The results show that in the UPA ITP11 area, 7.38% of the total trees explored, had hollowness, while in the UPA FLA01 area it was 4.88% and that the majority had high basic density. Twenty botanical families were identified in the exploration areas, where the Leguminosae family obtained the greatest representation. A total of 49 botanical species explored were identified, being Manilkara huberi (Ducke) Stanley, as basic high density wood. Regarding the frequency of occurrence of hollowness, the species Dinizia excelsa Ducke, popularly known as Angelim Vermelho, stood out for the two areas under study. However, it is shown the considerable existence of hollow trees among the trees selected for forest exploitation, reinforcing the importance of better targeting of appropriate methodologies for their identification, as well as, the better volumetric utilization of logs in sawmills, in order to certify the sustainability for the activity, regardless of the structural aspect of forestry individuals

High Brachial Artery Bifurcation Clinical finding in Cadaveric Specimen by Medical Students During Internship

    Get PDF
The high brachial artery bifurcation is an anatomical variation found in the arm segment. Although it does not present any alteration in the arterial blood functionality, it is considered a common spot for vascular lesions during surgical interventions that consist of the absence of anatomical knowledge. The research objective was to describe the high brachial artery bifurcation found in a cadaveric specimen from the anatomy laboratory as well as its main anatomoclinical aspects. Twenty-six upper limbs were investigated and dissected from the Universidade Brasil\u27s Human Anatomy Laboratory, SP. These were formolized cadaveric specimens from both sexes. During upper limb dissection, arterial anatomical variations were observed in a single-arm segment. The variation was unilateral in the left hemisphere. The clinical findings were high brachial artery bifurcation and a rare case of the radial artery in the medial path, as well as an ulnar artery with a lateral path in the arm median third. It is clear that the understanding of anatomy and anatomical variations patterns is of utmost importance and a requirement for surgery, so surgeons need to be aware of clinical, anatomical, and arterial variations data, avoiding vascular lesions during the surgical interventions. Dissection is an important learning tool for students and resident doctors. It is suggested the use of dissection as a pedagogical resource to acquire skills in surgeries during internship and also to improve the anatomical variation cognition of upper limbs

Innovation Policy and the Role of Accounting in the Strategic Management of Technology Transfer: A Study in the Scientific, Technological and Innovation Institutions of Northeast Brazil

    Get PDF
This research aims to analyze whether Intellectual Property assets of Federal Institutes (FIs) in Northeast Brazil are being measured, accounted for and evidenced in Financial Statements (FSs) of these Scientific, Technological and Innovation Institutions (STIIs).Therefore, in order to achieve the proposed objective, a bibliographic, exploratory, and descriptive research was carried out. This survey was achieved through a qualitative approach from document analysis and collection of secondary data related to innovation policies of FIs, and valuation and accounting of IP assets. The results showed that patent registrations granted and Technology Transfer (TT) are still incipient, although the majority of the Technological Innovation Nuclei (NITs) of Northeast FIs have innovation policies that support intellectual protection of inventions. Even though there are Brazilian Accounting Standards (NBCs) that uphold the process of measuring, recording and disclosing of IP assets, such as NBC TG 04 (R4, 2017a) and NBC TSP 08 (CFC, 2017b), this result can also be due to an absence of structured and guiding procedures within the scope of NITs’ innovation policies

Comparative analysis of sustainability assessment methods in agroecosystems

    Get PDF
The aim of this work was to compare and analyze three different methods of the sustainability evaluation in agricultural systems, such as the Indicateurs de Durabilité des Exploitations Agricoles (IDEA), the weighted Assessment of environmental impact of New Rural activities (APOIA Novo-Rural), and the indicators of sustainability in Agroecosystem (ISA). Those methods were comparied by two criteria. The first one relates to the distribution of sustainability indicators into categories (Endogenous System Operation, Endogenous Resources, Exogenous Systems Operation, and Exogenous Resources) and elements (technical, socioeconomic, natural and cultural resources). The second one involves the conceptual approaches of each method towards the concept of sustainability, objective and target audience, adoption of the systemic approach, level of stakeholder’s participation, level of adequacy, and method flexibility in different realities. The indicators set of each method, although quantitatively different, consider the diversity of elements that involve the agricultural systems. The IDEA method concentrates its indicators on the Endogenous System Operation category, while the APOIA Novo-Rural and the ISA methods concentrate their indicators on the Endogenous Resources category. The IDEA method directs the assessment to the awareness of the environmental processes that surround the agricultural activity in the property. On the other hand, in the APOIA Novo-Rural and the ISA methods, the reflective practice is fostered from impacts on the environment, and can be improved by extension actions. The main difference presented among those methods is the integrative evaluation of the indicators as well as trade-offs involved
