    Effects of Various Training Techniques on Bat Velocity of High School Baseball Players

    Faster bat speed allows a baseball or softball player more time to decide how to hit the ball and provides more transfer of momentum to the ball (Nathan, 2003; Syzmanski, DeRenne, Spaniol, 2009). Purpose: This paper examines the effectiveness of three training strategies for improving bat speed among high school baseball players. Methods: Nine high school students were recruited and separated into 3 groups using different training implements. A standard bat (29 oz.), a weighted bat (45 oz.), and Therabands attached to a standard bat were used over a 3-week training program. Data were analyzed using a Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA. Results: The standard bat group experienced no change in bat speed (± 0.89), while the weighted bat group increased by 1.9 ± 0.46 mph and the Theraband group improved by 3.1 ± 0.38 mph. The only significant difference was in the change in bat speed between the Theraband group and the standard bat group (p = .022). All other data were non-significant. Conclusions: Attaching Therabands to a standard bat may be an effective training tool to improve bat speed

    Common beans reduce their development and productivity when facing soil water deficit. Comprehension about growth response under this condition can be a tool for cultivar selection and escape from scarcity periods. Therefore, the objective was to characterize bean growth in different water conditions using logistic and chanter models. Two experiments (crop season= EI and fallow season = EII) were carried out in Santa Maria, RS, Brazil in a bifactorial scheme (cultivars: Triunfo, Garapiá, FC104; water condition: irrigated, not irrigated) in a completely randomized design. Fortnightly evaluations of height, number of nodes, stem diameter, root length, aerial part, roots, and nodules dry matter were carried out. The data were adjusted according to the accumulated thermal sum by the logistic and chanter models. From the results, it is noted that there was a dissimilar performance between water conditions, cultivars, and experiments. The best adjustment occurred for stem diameter, node number, and aerial part dry matter. Between models, the logistic is the most suitable to describe common bean growth

    Growth and social wellbeing of a country largely depends on all the activities that require knowledge, expertise and highly qualified individuals to fill the gape between new avenues and job demand. Higher education institutions, number of enrolments in universities and availability of qualified teachers is important for fostering quality of education with a smooth flow of academic activities. This study is an attempt to gauge the situation of public and private universities in Pakistan by focusing on the number of universities, number of teachers and student-teacher ratio in public and private universities of Pakistan. Secondary data has been reviewed and examined from the available source (Pakistan Education Statistic). It has been identified that there is an increase in the number of universities but with a prominent decrease in teaching staff particularly in public sector universities, whereas student-teacher ratio has also been witnessed higher in public sector than the private universities in Pakistan

    Analysis of Environmental Impacts Caused by the Construction of Power Transmission Lines in Brazil

    A country\u27s energy production, transmission and distribution systems are directly linked to its technological advances and economic growth. In Brazil, the creation and expansion of several transmission lines are planned. Such ventures often come up against environmental aspects, as they advance over forest and conservation areas. In this context, the objective of this research was to study the main environmental impacts caused by the implementation of transmission lines in forest areas in order to have a better understanding of the subject, thus being able to minimize or extinguish them. After gathering information, it was found that most of the environmental impacts are due to the deforested area around the transmission lines, called the right of way, which creates a corridor that alters the vegetation. Other serious impacts are related to the type of foundation most used: the micropile, which uses a toxic stabilizing mud in its drilling. The results of this research can be used as a basis to minimize such impacts that can cause damage to the environment and delays in the construction of the lines

    Does Quality of Life Impact the Mental Health of Students at a University of the Brazilian Amazon?

    The literature indicates a high prevalence of mental disorders in the university population and reveals the vulnerability of this public to psychic illness. Thus, exploring protective and risk constructs related to mental health problems in higher education students is important to collaborate with more effective interventions. Studies already associate personal and academic characteristics including age, income, and academic performance with mental illness of university students. However, there is still little scientific knowledge about psychosocial predictors such as quality of life to psychological disorders in this population. This study analyzed the predictive effect of quality of life on mental health of academics from a Public University of western Amazonia of Brazil. A cross-sectional design was carried out with 301 university students, who responded to the instruments: Quality of Life of the World Health Organization (WHOQOL-bref); Maslach Burnout Invetory/Student SurveyBI (MBI-SS); General Health Questionnaire (QSG); and a socio-demographic and academic characterization form. The results of the regression analyses indicated that the Quality-of-Life domains predicted the dimensions of emotional exhaustion and professional efficacy of burnout syndrome and influenced the five factors of general health, namely psychic stress, desire for death, distrust in performance capacity, sleep disorders and psychosomatic disorders. These findings suggest that strategies focused on increasing quality of life can mitigate mental health problems among university students

    A didactic proposal for the construction of the ellipse

    The purpose of the present is to propose the construction of the ellipse in a didactic way in which the work deals with the exposure of a specific methodology for the 3rd year of high school when dealing with ellipse content. Followed by the results of the realization of a workshop aimed at the construction of the ellipse in a didactic way, constructed with low cost material, thereby proposing the teaching of mathematics in a more pleasant and effective way, where the ellipse equations were defined with the theoretical concept and afterwards, the gardener\u27s method was used to construct this curve in a terrain, using ropes and civil construction fasteners, so that the student could concretize and apply this content in practice. After that, it was used for construction in the classroom using thread threads or thin strings to make the tracing and to finish it used the Geogebra software to finish the work showing the perfection of the curve explained in the classroom. The didactic process carried out showed a real interest of the students mainly with the use of the field practice. In conclusion, teaching mathematics in a didactic and interactive way provides a favorable environment for learning, stimulating students with a critical sense and an investigative spirit

    Sensory characteristics of wood from naturally fallen Amazonian trees for manufacture of products in Extractive Reserves

    In view of the national and international demand for wood for industrial use, solutions are being created to combat and reduce deforestation. One such solution is to use wood from naturally fallen trees. However, there has been limited evaluation of the technological potential of this material. This study therefore aimed to assess the general characteristics of wood from naturally fallen tree species in the Auatí-Paraná Extractive Reserve (RESEX), for potential use in product development. The characteristics analyzed were color, texture, grain, heartwood, sapwood and density. The species of naturally fallen trees were assessed using online databases, specialized literature and the xylotheque at the Wood Anatomy and Identification Laboratory of the National Institute of Amazonian Research (LAIM/INPA). This study and its results confirm the great quantity and quality of wood from naturally fallen trees with technological potential for the development of products, based on the classification of the sensory characteristics of the woods

    Synthesis, Characterization and Stabilization Analysis of Ferrofluid Based on Amazon Vegetable Copaifera O. L. Oil

    The Nanoscience and Nanobiotechnology develops several researches using nanostructures with magnetic properties. These nanostructures can have different physical properties depending on their composition and therefore can be used in various applications such as: drug markers and carriers, microelectronics, magnetic separations and environmental applications. Furthermore, the use of natural components in the synthesis of these nanostructures may come to complement these nanomaterials due to their underexplored properties and their renewable origin. This research will aim to carry out a pre-study to analyze the stability of magnetic fluids based on Fe3O4 nanoparticles functionalized with vegetable oil from the Copaifera SPP plant, known as Copaiba. Therefore, the Fe3O4 nanoparticles will be synthesized by the coprecipitation method by hydrolysis in an alkaline solution. Ferrofluid will be prepared by dispersing magnetic nanoparticles, at different concentrations, in the “in natura” oil. For the samples characterization measurements were taken of: UV-vis, FTIR, NIR spectrophotometry, XRD and Magnetic Susceptibility, the temporal analysis was recorded periodically, observing the possible stability of the samples. This work reports that the ferrofluid showed good stability and the magnetic properties associated with the nanoparticles the properties of the Amazon oil used

    Gender-Based Violence and Access to Education: An Empirical Analysis for Women in Nakuru County, Kenya

    Gender based violence (GBV) consequences on women economic empowerment within Kenya are immensely widespread. Nakuru East Sub County, in particular has reported many cases of GBV. The aim of this study was to examine effects of gender-based violence on the women access to education. This investigation was guided by Ecological theory and a descriptive survey design was adopted in this study. Using a questionnaire, focus group discussions (FGDs) and key informant interviews, the results are based on achieved response of a group of 40 women, 2 chiefs and 2 officers in charge of children protection unit and 3 CSOs Staff. Study findings indicate that there was notable impact of GBV on women access to education in Nakuru East. Cases of school dropout as a result of teenage pregnancies, Early marriage, child labour, and giving preference to boys in education were top on the findings. Empowerment of women reduces the unequal power relationship between women and men which has been identified as the root cause of GBV

    Optimization of the transfer process to the Municipalities and the Federal District - DF, of Law 13,240, of December 30, 2015

    The need for continuous improvement in the transfer process to municipalities and the Federal District in compliance with the legislation in art. 27 of Law No. 13,240, of December 30, 2015, included the wording of art. 6-B in Decree-Law No. 2,398, of December 21, 1987, establishing the obligation for the Union, through the Secretariat for Coordination and Governance of the Union\u27s Heritage - SPU, to transfer the corresponding to the Municipalities and the Federal District - DF to 20% (twenty percent) of the annual collections of the previous year referring to Forum, Occupancy Fee and Laudemium, charged for the use of those properties located in the municipalities and in the DF and art. 17 of Law No. 13,240, of 2015, and 16-G of Law No. 13,465, of July 11, 2017, likewise determined the transfer of 20% of equity income arising from the sale of Federal properties that are registered in occupation and, also, the remission of jurisdiction of the real estate under a lease, respectively, always observing the location of the real estate. The primary interest is to examine the transfer process in the last 5 (five) years and optimize, analyze the failures of the transfer process, as well as quantify the amounts not transferred to the states
