COVID-19: Reversing the Gains of Active Learning
Get PDFCOVID-19 and its ensuing pandemic ignited an atomic bomb on educational systems across the world invoking an emergent and abrupt transition to remote learning. The aftershocks were unpredictable but left a crippled educational system where students were forced into their bedrooms, sometimes deported to their homelands in different time-zones and isolated from their friends and peers. Learning quickly transitioned from social face-to-face interactions to an estranged and detached face-to-computer dependence. Although some introverted students welcomed this transition, many were dissatisfied, and their performance reflected this sentiment. In this study, we compare students’ performance in an undergraduate mathematics class in a large research-intensive university in the Western United States of America over a 2-year time period from 2019 to 2020. This started as a traditional lecture-style course for 3 quarters, transitioned to a hybrid lecture style with integrated adaptive team-based quizzes for 2 quarters, and abruptly changed with the COVID-19 pandemic to online lectures with team-based quizzes for 1 quarter. We demonstrate in our retrospective data analysis that the performance gains from the traditional lecture-style transition to active learning were subsequently lost in the movement to remote learning. We discuss the many obstacles that may have accounted for this loss of performance and suggest future directions for improving remote active learning methodologies
Creativity in teaching math to students with intellectual disabilities

When students are able to combine ideas, techniques, approaches that enable them to solve problems in different ways we can assert that they were taught creativity in their mathematical instructions. Most tests for evaluation of mathematical creativity measure the flexibility, fluency, and originality of student responses. Creativity tends to be hindered in the case of students with mild intellectual disabilities. Studies on the application of creativity in the teaching of mathematics to students with intellectual disabilities are limited. The Public perspectives on Healthcare and Artificial Intelligence (AI): A survey study
No full textArtificial Intelligence is the focus term of the 21st century. It has been widely accepted and adopted in several key areas like education, marketing, retail, and engineering among numerous others however the healthcare sector seems to lag in its welcome. AI has the potential to unlock a new transformation in patient care, diagnosis, and mentoring and support services as seen from a review of relevant literature. It is therefore essential to understand how people view Artificial Intelligence and feel its need or demands in improving their health-related needs. This study was designed, keeping this thought in mind. A survey study was carried out in Delhi-NCR with fifty participants belonging to the age group of 18-50 years, who were health-conscious, and proficient in the use of technology like smartphones and other smart devices. The survey findings reveal that respondents desired the integration of Artificial Intelligence-based solutions to medical services ranging from appointment booking through intelligent chatbots to insightful diagnosis using risk profiles, intricate surgeries guided by intelligent robots to mentoring services which described health goals and discussed sustainable solutions towards achieving desired goals through lifestyle changes. Secondary data showed the application of such technologies in hospitals in form of unique personalized programs aimed at improving patient care and promote good health. The study further recommends the use of Artificial Intelligence in healthcare services in both rural and urban areas to reduce the burden on medical professionals, increase personalized and efficient healthcare service provision especially in times of global pandemic and increase people’s consciousness towards the need for good health through the adoption of positive lifestyle changes
The use of Wittgenstein\u27s language games to promote argumentation in children at the beginning of scientific literacy: a proposal for analyzing the argumentative process.
Get PDFThe insertion of the individual in the scientific culture goes through scientific literacy and this, through teaching that privileges research and argumentation in the school scenario, mainly in Science classes. Based on indicators found in the literature that point to scientific literacy and models proposed by Lawson to define the structure of the argument, a table was elaborated to relate the argumentation of children in the second year of elementary school, leveling it in five levels that point to the logical reasoning and the dominion of content, taking into account Wittgenstein\u27s linguistic games. To analyze what level the children were at, a didactic sequence was elaborated that allowed the observation and study of the arguments used by them. Considering such activities and the children\u27s age group, it was observed that they tend not to complete the argumentative sequence, but they already have strong traces of scientific literacy
Slavery in the Contemporary World: An Examination of Modern Slavery in Africa
Get PDFThe paper examines slavery in the contemporary world with focus on examination of modern slavery in Africa. It underscored factors promoting slavery in the modern world, trends of modern slavery, causes of modern slavery in Africa, and consequences of modern slavery in Africa. The Marxian conflict theory was used as a guide and a background upon which the paper was anchored. From the point of view of the theory and available literature reviewed, the paper observed that factors such as population explosion of the post second world war, rapid economic change and the incorporation of the third world economies into the world economy in the guise of globalisation, and the widespread governmental corruption among others, are responsible for modern slavery in Africa and the world over. It revealed that forced labour, sex slavery, practice of debt bondage and trafficking in persons are all characteristics of modern slavery. The significance of this is enormous and antithetical to the development of the continent and humanity at large. The paper recommended that policies on human migration should be reviewed across borders, agencies established to tackle the menace of trafficking in persons should straightened so as to function effectively and efficiently, African countries should make frantic efforts in tackling the issue of corruption and over-dependence on advanced countries of the world. Finally, a radical change in mentality is advised of African citizens on migration
Integration method of non-elementary exponential functions using iterated Fubinni integrals
Get PDFThe present work presents a new method of integration of non-elementary exponential functions where Fubinni\u27s iterated integrals were used. In this research, some approximations were used in order to generalize the results obtained through mathematical series, in addition to integration methods and double integrals. In addition to the integration methods, the Taylor series was used, where the value found and compatible with the values of the power series that are used to calculate the value of the exponential function demonstrated in the work was verified. In addition to the methods described, a comparison of the values obtained by the series and the values described in the method was improvised, where it was noticed that the higher the value of the variable, the closer the results show a stability for the variable greater than the value 4, described in table 01. The conclusions point to a great improvement, mainly for solving elliptic differential equations and statistical functions
An Analytical Framework for Evaluating Potential Truck Parking Locations
Get PDFAs the number of trucks on the road continues to increase, mandatory rest periods combined with a decreasing number of parking spaces and amenities geared towards truck drivers have created a paradoxical yet often overlooked issue of truck parking shortage. Especially within the urbanized landscape of New Jersey, truck stops are rarely considered as the highest and best use form of development and those that exist are often expensive to operate. Most of the existing research on this issue has focused on parking demand modeling or applications of the intelligent transportation system technology to improve the use of existing truck stops. Nonetheless, limited previous research has focused on expanding truck parking capacity. This study develops a methodological framework for evaluating some of the important social, economic, and environmental factors when planning the development of a new truck parking facility. With an example application to the State of New Jersey, this study presents a step-by-step analytical process to help prioritize potential truck parking locations
The Research of Constructing Generativity Model of Taiwan\u27s Older Adults
Get PDFThis research was mainly based on the literature review and interview to depict the older adult’s self-contribution is built-up by social participation, giving meanings to contribution services throughout the process, and to establish the localized generativity model. Generativity is defined as an inner desire of an individual to lend a hand or make contribution to the society. Older adults wished to keep nurturing, guiding and mentoring their offspring even in passing down their experiences and knowledges to the next generation during the progress of ageing. Thus, generativity is the key concept to a successful ageing and old ages. In a nutshell, generativity is an implicit ability, which is possessed by all, to help one’s descendants and others, and create one’s fulfilling life. The findings of this research found that the development process of older adults generativity model in Taiwan includes 8 features: motivation source, concern, belief, commitment, preparation, action, narration, and future. This result echoed to generativity model proposed by McAdams and de St. Aubin (1992). The participations make people have clearly understanding about the significance of construct the generativity and investigate the generativity model of Taiwan
Teacher – Student Relationship as a Determinant of Students’ Classroom Participation in some Secondary Schools in Kumba I Municipality
Get PDFThe study investigates the Effect of Teacher- Student Relationship on Students’ Classroom Participation in the Kumba I Municipality. The descriptive survey research design was used to collect data. Four research objectives were formulated to guide this study. The target population for the study comprised three secondary schools. (one government, one confessional and one lay private) and a sample of 160 students purposively selected from them. The instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire which comprised of closed ended questions. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics that is tables and frequencies. The findings revealed that all the variables exploited by the study (communication, emotionally- safe learning environment, student perception of teachers, motivation and praise) all have the potential of affecting students’ classroom participation in secondary schools in Kumba Municipality. Based on the findings, the following recommendations were made: Teachers are advised to routinely show positive attitudes, beliefs and expectations that will motivate students, build a cordial relationship with their students, and students are encouraged to feel free to express their problems especially academic problems to their teachers

Managers of companies and educational units must contain all their demands in a unit in the administrative sector, so that there are no gaps or divisions in the separation of problems, such as lack of communication and difficulty in working as a team. Therefore, thinking about the actions of managers is immensely important for a good forwarding of professionalization. This is a bibliographical and documentary research, with a qualitative interpretive nature. With regard to the conditions for the effectiveness of the management process in the Brazilian business and educational fields, it became effective for us to carry out a bibliographic survey of existing studies on the subject since the turn of the 21st century.
