Experiential Behavioral Economics Courses: Practical lessons learned from the Middle East

    Get PDF
This paper presents the development and implementation of experiential behavioral economics course in three Middle East universities. Experiential learning has proven to have many benefits for students because of putting them at the center of the learning process and allowing them to learn by doing. More specifically, as part of the practical sessions, students were tasked to design, implement and report on one field experiment conducted in collaboration with a nudge unit. We believe that this approach whereby students apply their knowledge through experimentation to address issues relevant to their communities and environment can be more effective and impactful than traditional teaching or relying only on classroom-based experiments. In this paper, we share the lessons learned from the journey of delivering several experiential behavioral economics courses

    Get PDF
Technological changes brought a need to review the architecture of operational activities, and it was up to ergonomics to turn to what would be called “external variables”, technological variables and sociological variables. The objective of this research is to build and test a tool that can guide the strategic actions of Ergonomics as to evaluating the feasibility of projects, in the operational phase, as well as in the technology transfer that these projects may present. For this work, the Methodology used was divided into two parts: building of the research portfolio and building details as to the Project Feasibility Analysis model. Based on the results found through the development of a tool to guide Ergonomics, by means of the operational feasibility of the project, in combination with technology transfer, a tool called Capability Matrix was built, which proved to be flexible and efficient, having a greater potential compared to that of its initial design. This investigation leaves as a perspective for future works the application of the matrix to other civil construction activities, in addition to enabling technology transfer to other activities belonging to civil construction and the industry in general

Acute abdomen in children is a condition that causes great distress to parents, and appendicitis is its most common cause, being more frequent at school age. This pathology is the cause of numerous visits to public and private hospitals around the world, and brings several complications. It is important that the health team is aware of the possibility of appendicitis in children, due to its high incidence and difficulty in establishing its diagnosis, because the symptoms are nonspecific and there are different clinical presentations. Objective: to explain the importance of the Alvarado criterion for the diagnosis of acute childhood appendicitis. Methodology: This is an integrative bibliographic review, in articles published in the PubMed, Virtual Health Library and Google Scholar databases. For the search for data, the descriptors “Acute abdomen”, “Appendicitis”, “Children” and the keyword “Alvarado score” were used. Data were collected in December 2020. Results: 16 articles were selected as the final sample for analysis of the review, six in English, nine in Portuguese and one in Spanish. Conclusion: Through this review it can be concluded that the use of the Alvarado Score for the diagnosis of acute appendicitis in children is useful and effective, avoiding the use of imaging tests in patients with a score above 7 on this scale

The onset of the COVID-19 pandemic brought social distancing and thus the necessity of remote learning, especially for international programs, which had the additional challenge of travel and border restrictions. This research adds to the literature by looking at student perceptions of their learning environment within one international medical program. The current study fills the gap in research on medical students’ perceptions with the e-learning environment and provides valuable insight into program development for international medical schools interested in incorporating e-learning into their curriculum.&nbsp

Is there gender equity in production engineering? Report of women engineers trained in the period from 2011 to 2018

    No full text
This article aims to identify the challenges that women engineers face in their field of work. The main theoretical references are: Silva (1992), Hirata; Kergoat (2007), Carvalho; Casagrande (2011); Carvalho (2008); Casagrande et al. (2004); Lombardi (2006a, 2006b); Cabral; Bazzo (2005); Lime; Souza (2011); among others. It is a qualitative-quantitative research and data were collected through questionnaires. The 69 women who graduated from 2011 to 2018 were invited to participate in the survey. Of these 33 answered the instrument. The data show that women engineers experience gender discrimination, sexism, racism and sexual and moral harassment in their work field. Finally, these women, in 2019, reported cases of gender inequality experienced in the labor market. In this perspective, the study points out the following strategies to fight gender discrimination in the production engineering course: - include publications by renowned engineers in the teaching plans; - discuss with students and professors of the course about gender equity in the labor market

New elements are needed to contribute to the idea of not reusing the materials, but rather improving their use, the massará for example is known in the region of Teresina-PI is a connecting material, of little consistency, easily disaggregatable (friable), containing white silica pebbles and of little utilização in the region. The interlocked concrete floor presents peculiar characteristics among which are those that configure it as a floor. The work analyzes through a mechanical strength and water absorption test the capacity that the interlocked concrete floor with the addition of massará in its composition offers in relation to bear load. Two traces with massará will be tried and then specimens will be molded to obtain the results of mechanical tests and characterization of the material in the laboratory. After the tests, it was observed the possibility of using it as components in the production of interlocked laying blocks used in construction companies of Teresina - PI

Challenges in the use of extracorporal livers technologies

    No full text
The human liver is a necessary organ in metabolism but when its working is harmed,  can cause liver failure in varying degrees and raise the mortality rate. The only existing treatment for the disease so far is liver transplantation. Therefore, the objective of this research was to a evaluate the challenges of the artificial technologies of liver support (ATL) developed in the last nine years existing in the world. The technologies evaluated were those that consider the patient\u27s need have a survival while waiting of the transplant or    confirm that  will not need the donated liver. This research is of type descriptive and bibliographical and was based on scientific articles published in the following databases: National Library of Medicine (PubMed), Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO), Academic Google, Latin American and Caribean Literature in Health Sciences (LACLHS), Virtual Health Library (VHL) and Capes Journal (Brazil).  In the studies found, was verified that extracorporeal liver support technologies of the bioartificial type and artificial liver do not guarantee sufficient patient survival.  Although this technologies have some clinical benefit with their use,  is possible that the recipient patients suffer from metabolic intoxication. So that technologies can produce survival expected in patients, should be considered three pillars: the disease, the technology used and the dose of therapy. This research is important because it will help in the development of new methodologies better suited to recipientes

A new multi-agent approach for generating feedbacks base on Multiple Choice Questions

    No full text
Most intelligent tutorial systems promote the learning and resolution of exercises based on feedback in the form of advice, remarks, explanation…To always remain in self-assessment, our approach offers a new type of feedback in the form of multiple-choice questions applied in the field of algorithms (language c, java ...) dedicated for beginners in programming. The approach is based on the multi-agent model to have interaction between learners without the help of the teacher. There are three types of agents in our work, there is the learner agent who represents the learner, there is also the feedback agent who sends the MCQs to the learners who made mistakes and finally, the controller agent feeds the base of multiple-choice questions based on feedback from learners. The controlling agent compares the instructions of the learners with the instructions of the correct model based on the AST abstract syntax tree and detects errors which will be proposed as erroneous items (distractors) for the learners. We can say that this type of feedback is not direct like other work (advice, comments, explanation ...) but we always remain in the evaluation: MCQ, exercise ... As perspectives, we will focus mainly on the classification of LO learning objects in the form of an ontology to facilitate the use of data and the generation of multiple-choice questions at different levels. And also, we aim to develop a suitable platform which allows to define the agents and the messages to be exchanged between them to set up our system
