We are living in times when the role of the teacher turns from the teacher to the learner's guide and the teacher should be a good learner's companion in educational sciences. COVID-19 pandemic has shaken the existing paradigms in education, forcing the scientific knowledge produced to be reconsidered. Day by day, learner features such as resilience, flexibility, self-regulation, self-management, motivational stability beliefs, learning styles, critical thinking, etc. are gaining in importance and being discussed in an increasing amount. From this point of view, we share student-friendly teaching approaches with you in this article. Emmi Pikler Approach cares about the principles of complete freedom of movement, gentle and respectful communication between the baby and the caregiver, the characteristics of the baby's playground. In this approach apply ideas on child development which can be summarized as letting children develop with their own potential and providing care like a mother would do.. Montessori Education predicts that every child has his/her own development, personality and can learn in line with the his/her capacity. Thanks to these opportunities provided to children according to this education system, it reflects an education system in which their choices replace the educator's willingness, and errors can be controlled as a result of their own behavior. Reggio Emilia approach aims to provide opportunities for children to make discoveries through concrete experiences, values their research production and testing their hypotheses, and also highlights their artistic development. To welcome this approach and its components to our classes, starting from pre-school, means opening new worlds to our young learners. Sudbury Valley Schools argue that all people are curious by nature and that effective, permanent and deep-rooted learning is possible if it is initiated by the learner. These schools prioritize the importance of psychological comfort, individual autonomy, and play, and also focus on the function of intrinsic motivation in education rather than external motivation. In terms of learning, student-initiated learning has prioritized in these schools. Sudbury Valley Schools stand out as institutions that placed democracy on the central focus

    No full text
The thematic curriculum is defined as a learning method that integrates attitudes, skills, knowledge, learning value, and creative thinking using themes in the learning process. By implementing this curriculum, it is expected that it would bridge the school and daily-life learning experiences. The present study investigated some challenges in thematic curriculum implementation at five elementary schools in a remote area. This qualitative research utilized semistructured interviews and classroom observation involving 20 teachers. A thematic analysis approach was used for this study. The study found that the teachers' lack of understanding of thematic curriculum and the lack of parental involvement are the main challenge of this curriculum implementation. This study suggests that providing teachers' learning environment and creating PTA meetings might maximize the potential of thematic curriculum implementation in elementary schools in remote areas

In the present study, the impact of formative assessment on secondary school students’ mathematics achievement and their metacognitive awareness was examined. The participants included 164 (84 boys) grade 11 students and four mathematics teachers from four secondary schools in Kenya. A quasiexperimental pretest-posttest non-equivalent group design was used to determine if there was any significant difference in the students' mathematics achievement scores and their metacognitive awareness after a formative assessment intervention. The influence of gender on mathematics achievement and metacognitive awareness was also examined. Formative assessment was conceptualized as an instructional approach consisting of five strategies. After controlling for pretest scores, the results revealed that students who were taught using formative assessment instructional approach outperformed those taught using conventional approach for both mathematics achievement (p = 0.014, η2 = 0.38) and metacognitive awareness (p < 0.001, η2 = 0.47). Analysis based on gender did not reveal any gender influence on students’ mathematics achievement (p = 0.571, η2 = 0.002) and their metacognitive awareness (p = 0.287, η2 = 0.008). The current study adds knowledge to the limited empirical evidence regarding the impact of formative assessment conceptualized as an instructional approach on students’ mathematic’s achievement and their metacognitive awareness

    No full text
Learning or lecturing, which are an essential part of the education process, are often presented only by cramming the teaching materials' contents to students but defying values. Allowing this to continue to happen will unquestionably lead to the next generation's increasingly tense situation, who are already in a messy condition and may lose their creative character. Along with character education that is always echoed, the presence of the MURRDERR strategy (Metaphor, Understand, Recall, Recognize, Detect, Elaborate, Review, and Respect) in classroom learning is expected to be one of the excellent and attractive choices for instilling lively characters in students. This paper provides a brief overview of the results of five semesters in total, including two semesters of applying the MURRDERR strategy in lectures at the Elementary Teacher Education Program, especially in mathematics lectures. Two research phases: first, didactic design research to produce teaching materials that can optimize the emergence of creative characters and followed by a quasi-experimental method. As a result, (1) the MURRDERR strategy provided a better contribution than conventional (expository/lecturing) learning in developing the creative character of students of the Elementary School Teacher Program, (2) teaching material developed through didactic design research was beneficial in achieving optimal learning outcomes, (3) students of the Elementary School Teacher Program with a background in science education tended to equip and prepare themselves to deal with issues related to creativity

The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of supplemental word recognition strategies on students receiving intensive (Tier III) remedial reading instruction. Two-hundred and thirteen middle school students with reading difficulties received an intensive reading intervention (i.e., Corrective Reading Decoding strand) delivered by trained school staff (n = 21) at three middle schools. The 213 fifth through eighth grade students (121 males, 92 females) enrolled in three northwestern school districts (two rural and one urban). Of the 213 students, one-hundred and seven also received supplemental word recognition instruction using Reading Excellence: Word Attack and Rate Development Strategies (REWARDS). Using a pre-post quasi-experimental design, the effects of the Corrective Reading Decoding (CRD) program was compared to CRD combined with the REWARDS program. The REWARDS program produced statistically and educationally significant changes in the basic reading skills of students over and above Corrective Reading Decoding alone. Students in the REWARDS condition demonstrated statistically significant mean changes on the WJ-III Basic Reading Skills cluster and associated subtests and the DIBELS ORF probe compared to those in the comparison condition. Results, implications, and limitations are discussed

Extending the Theory of Planned Behavior: A Case of Learning Chinese as a Third Language

    No full text
Language has always been considered the most effective medium of communication among humans to express their thoughts, opinions, and emotions. As a consequence of globalization, a lot of people end up living, studying, working, and travelling in countries where both their first and the second languages may not be used. This situation creates a need for learning a third language (L3) considering proficiency in first (native) and second (presumably English) languages. Numerous studies have been conducted on L2 and a lot in the field of L3. However, this study found a scope to research specifically on the language (L3) learning intention in terms of its usefulness for international students who are in a country where their native language and the L2 are not in use. More than 161 international students studying under the Chinese Language Learning program as well as students studying in graduate and undergraduate levels at public universities in Yunnan, Beijing, Jiangsu, and Hunan in China participated in this study. By extending the theory of planned behavior with the Self Determination Theory (SDT), along with the influence of the L2, a survey questionnaire was prepared and data was collected from these participants. Later, the data was analyzed by common method variance and path model estimation of Partial Least Square (PLS) algorithm to generate and evaluate predictions for intentions of learning Chinese as the L3 considering the perceived usefulness of the language which eventually validates the mentioned theories
