Collective Teacher Self-Efficacy Scale for Elementary School Teachers

    No full text
Collective Teacher Self-Efficacy refers to the beliefs of the faculty of a school about their ability to work as a team and achieve positive results. Although it presents itself as a promising concept related, the research is relatively scarce and the existing instruments have some limitations. The present work aims to provide new psychometric evidence for a recently created instrument. For this, an expert judgment test was carried out that evaluated content validity, and the instrument was administered to a sample of 309 subjects to analyze internal structure and testcriterion validity. Good content validity was observed, evidenced by the satisfactory evaluations of the pertinence and clarity of the items. Evidence of a five-dimensional factor structure was provided (self-efficacy for decision making, teaching, familial participation, community participation and positive school climate), with good fit indexes and internal consistency. As was expected, relationships with job satisfaction, institutional belonging, job stress, institutional commitment, and job wellbeing were found. Finally, the possible applications of the instrument are discussed

Examining Some of Students’ Challenges and Use of Algorithmic ProblemSolving Approaches in Electrochemical Titrations

    No full text
Redox titration problems are considered difficult for students to learn due to their abstract nature, the myriad amount of representations, and the mathematical competency required to learn and solve. The goal of this research project is to examine challenges students face in learning about redox titration-related problems, approaches they use in learning about electrochemical titration problems, and reliance on algorithmic problem-solving instead of conceptual understanding in solving these problems. The research project took place at the City College of New York, which is an urban, minority serving, and public institution. The research instrument used in this research investigation is a survey comprised of Likert-type and open-ended questions. The number of research participants is n = 184. The data was collected and analyzed and histograms and figures were made based on the data analysis. A single factor ANOVA method was performed on the Likert-type questions which showed evidence against the null hypothesis and that shows a strong relationship between variables. The data indicate that the principal barrier to learning about redox titration related problems is that students’ reliance on algorithmic problems solving, rote learning, and mathematical approaches. Students’ dependence on rote learning and memorization in problem solving could be attributed to the lack of well-developed understanding of the concepts. The investigation shows that students focus on surface features in learning and this translates to hindrance of knowledge transfer

Mediating Effects of Mobile Phone Use on the Relationship between Mobile Addiction and Academic Behavior

    No full text
Since there is little research on the mediative effect of excessive mobile phone use on mobile addiction and academic behavior among university students, hence, the current study sought to study the relationship between these three variables. Data was collected from 435 university students through an online Google form survey sent through a WhatsApp link. Overall, the result shows that that level of mobile addiction was moderate. More than 40% of the respondents had experienced the impact of excessive use of mobile phone while more than 16% experienced negative academic behaviour. Besides, structural equation model fit and measurement models were used to analyze the data with a two-stage structural equation modelling. The first stage involved the assessment of measurement model or also known as Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) for negative academic behavior, excessive mobile phone use and mobile addiction. The measurement model achieved a good fitness index where, RMSEA = 0.064, NFI = 0.9, CFI = 0.932, TLI = 0.921, and Relative Chi-square (Chisq/df) = 2.855. In the second stage of assessment of the structural equation model, the study confirmed that excessive mobile phone use mediates the relationship between mobile addiction and negative academic behavior among students in higher education in Malaysia. The novelty of this study lies in the exploratory analysis of these three variables with a systematic method to find a conclusive result. In summary the findings imply that higher education institutions need to have better guidelines to regulate mobile phone use among students in higher learning institutes

    No full text
The research examined teachers’ perceptions of factors affecting their perceived effectiveness in online teaching in the Israeli educational system, comparing Jewish and Arab teachers' views during the Covid-19 crisis. The research employed quantitative and qualitative approaches. 295 teachers responded to a questionnaire, and 22 teachers participated in a semi-structured interview. Quantitative data analysis found that the variables socio-economic status, the teacher’s age, technological competence, frequency of synchronous teaching and their satisfaction with the profession significantly predicted perceived effectiveness in online teaching. Comparison between Jewish and Arab teachers indicated the correlation between sector and perceived effectiveness in online teaching is mediated by the number of teachers’ synchronous teaching hours. Above all the variables, Jewish teachers’ perceived effectiveness in online teaching is best explained by the number of synchronous teaching hours. Jewish teachers taught on average more synchronous online hours per week in comparison to Arab teachers, and the number of synchronous teaching hours predicted perceived effectiveness in online teaching. Quantitative and qualitative data, gathered from the interviews with the teachers were triangulated, reinforcing findings and explaining the quantitative data. Findings revealed that the transition to online learning may increase extant gaps between Israeli society's sectors
